Osaka College<br />

of Music Wind Orchestra<br />

Osaka College of Music, which will<br />

celebrate the 100 th anniversary of its<br />

foundation in 2015, is the only specialist<br />

music college in the Kansai Region of Japan.<br />

OCM has built up a strong track record with<br />

a mainly traditional curriculum <strong>and</strong> has won<br />

a name <strong>for</strong> itself as a traditional school in the<br />

Kansai Region. The curriculum of the wind<br />

<strong>and</strong> percussion major course has a special<br />

focus on ensemble work <strong>and</strong> has achieved<br />

remarkable successes in recent years. Many<br />

of OCM’s graduates are involved in Wind<br />

Music in a teaching capacity, in <strong>and</strong> around<br />

the Kansai Region.<br />

OCM was established in the hope that it<br />

would become “a new cradle of musical<br />

culture” (including wind music) <strong>and</strong>, in this<br />

spirit, seeks to produce “high quality”<br />

musicians who maintain a tradition of<br />

technical skill <strong>and</strong> expertise in music, have a<br />

profound underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the spirituality of<br />

music <strong>and</strong> are able to make a wide-ranging<br />

contribution to society through music. As<br />

part of its curriculum, OCM has held a<br />

regular Wind Music concert once a year,<br />

since 1968, providing an opportunity <strong>for</strong><br />

students to present the fruit of their studies.<br />

Today, students in every year participate in<br />

Wind <strong>Ensembles</strong> <strong>and</strong> pursue their studies<br />

under a structured 4-year curriculum. For<br />

regular <strong>and</strong> other concerts, Wind <strong>Ensembles</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> orchestras centering on 4 th -year<br />

students are <strong>for</strong>med <strong>and</strong> a wide range of<br />

music is studied, from original compositions<br />

<strong>for</strong> wind to arrangements of orchestral works.<br />

OCM also devotes attention to practical<br />

instruction with a view to produce teachers<br />

as well as per<strong>for</strong>mers. Under the “Sound<br />

School” project, a collaboration with the city<br />

of Toyonaka in which OCM is situated,<br />

students on the wind <strong>and</strong> percussion major<br />

course take an active part in local musical life<br />

giving concerts <strong>and</strong> private wind instrument<br />

lessons at elementary <strong>and</strong> junior high schools<br />

in Toyonaka.<br />

Toru Kitano (conductor)<br />

OCM Graduate in Instrumental Per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

Course (Percussion); completed OCM<br />

One-Year Postgraduate Course<br />

Toru Kitano is a solo <strong>and</strong> chamber percussionist<br />

whose repertoire centers on Baroque<br />

<strong>and</strong> contemporary music. In addition to<br />

seven recitals in Osaka <strong>and</strong> Tokyo he has<br />

given overseas recitals in cities including<br />

New York <strong>and</strong> Hong Kong <strong>and</strong> is highly<br />

regarded <strong>for</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mances that preserve the<br />

Japanese spirit. He is particularly highly<br />

regarded in the field of contemporary music<br />

<strong>and</strong> has premiered many works by Japanese<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>eign composers.<br />

His activities in the field of Wind Music<br />

include serving as conductor of the OCM<br />

Wind Orchestra <strong>and</strong> musical director of the<br />

Nishinomiya City Wind Orchestra. He also<br />

serves on the judges’ panel of many Wind<br />

Music competitions in Japan <strong>and</strong> overseas.<br />

Toru Kitano has won numerous prizes,<br />

including the Osaka Culture Festival<br />

Awards/Gold Award, Osaka Culture Festival<br />

Awards/Main Division Award (3 times),<br />

Osaka Prefecture Per<strong>for</strong>ming Arts Award,<br />

Osaka Prefectural Theatre Awards/Encouragement<br />

Award Music Critique Club<br />

Awards/Encouragement Award, <strong>and</strong> Music<br />

Critique Club Awards/Newcomer Award.<br />

Toru Kitano is professor at OCM, dean of<br />

OCM Graduate School <strong>and</strong> director of<br />

Percussion Group Osaka.<br />

Applications to host the<br />

2015 WASBE Conference<br />

Locations wish to host the 2015<br />

WASBE Conference should send a<br />

letter of application to the WASBE<br />

President prior to 31 May <strong>2011</strong>. The<br />

letter of application should include the<br />

following supporting materials:<br />

• A statement indicating what<br />

special features this site has which<br />

would make it an ideal location <strong>for</strong> an<br />

international conference.<br />

• A statement indicating that the<br />

local organization is familiar with the<br />

Guidelines <strong>for</strong> Organizing WASBE<br />

International (biennial) Conferences<br />

<strong>and</strong> is willing to adhere to these Guidelines.<br />

• A statement indicating that the<br />

local organization is willing two years in<br />

advance of the conference to sign a<br />

Letter of Agreement with WASBE<br />

specifying the duties <strong>and</strong> responsibilities<br />

of the WASBE artistic planning<br />

committee <strong>and</strong> the local organization.<br />

Selected applicants will be invited by<br />

the WASBE President to make a<br />

presentation at the WASBE Board<br />

Meeting at the 15 th WASBE Conference<br />

in Taiwan in July <strong>2011</strong>.<br />
