conducting, teaching and musical skills. Participants will be sent a list of scores to prepare in advance, and the repertoire will include a variety of works for ensembles of variouslevels. Works to be studied include established masterworks as well as new music for winds. In addition to conducting a live ensemble and receiving feedback from the faculty, participants will attend lectures and discussions on choosing repertoire, score study, rehearsal techniques, movement and music interpretation. The symposium is recommended for conductors of all levels with a desire to learn and explore new ideas. Registration for participants will be limited to 30. Registration will include completion of an application form, the registration fee and a resume. Preference will be given to those with a completed bachelor’s degree and some experience. There is no limit on those interested in auditing. Applications will be accepted until the symposium is filled. The Workshop will take place Monday through Thursday, July 11-14, and is designed for band and orchestra conductors actively teaching at the middle school, high school, and college levels. CONDUCTING FACULTY: Virginia Allen (Juilliard and Curtis), David Effron (Indiana University), and George Stelluto (Juilliard). SEMINAR TEACHERS: Otto-Werner Mueller (Conductor Emeritus, Juilliard; The Curtis Institute of Music); David Effron (Indiana University); Thomas Duffy (Yale University); Juilliard faculty members Virginia Allen (Music), Wayne Oquin (Ear Training), Mark Olson (Drama); and Noa Kageyama (Music). This Workshop is designed for band and orchestra conductors actively teaching at the middle school, high school, and college levels. The Workshop features band and orchestra conducting in the same workshop, daily conducting opportunities with advanced ensembles, sessions on specific issues in conducting and music education, and an opportunity for each Conducting Fellow to work with Conducting Faculty. All conducting sessions are video recorded. Seminar topics include conducting mixed meters, training young orchestra musicians, score preparation, spectrum of movement, music and the brain, and aural skills for conductors. The repertoire is Gounod: Petite Symphonie; Stravinsky: L’Histoire du Soldat; and Mozart: Symphony No. 35 Ten CONDUCTING FELLOWS will be selected to conduct during daily podium sessions for a Workshop total of approximately 60 minutes; receive video feedback; and participate in seminars. Conducting Fellow applicants must submit a DVD of 15 minutes of a rehearsal and 15 minutes of a performance with the application. The Conducting Fellow fee is $2,000 for 2 credits. Thirty PARTICIPANTS will be selected to observe conducting sessions and participate in seminars. The Participant fee is $1,200 for 1 credit. Limited housing is available. The symposium focuses on issues that confront music educators at all levels: choice of appropriate repertoire, effective rehearsal and conducting techniques, instrumental pedagogy, the role of technology in music education, advocacy for music education, and many other topics. Conducting Option: a limited number of participants will have the opportunity to conduct an ensemble during the week. Wind Literature & Conducting Workshop Date: Monday, July 25, 2011 – Friday, July 29, 2011 Location: Don Wright Faculty of Music, London, NA6 3K7/Canada This weeklong symposium will provide participants with the opportunity to conduct both large and chamber ensembles and receive immediate feedback. Topics will include: music selection, rehearsal strategies, score analysys, wind band masterworks, developing expressive gestures, and conducting issues directly related to the repertoire being studied. Conductor-participants will conduct the laboratory ensemble a minimum of three times throughout the week, receiving clinician input while on the podium as well as during a post-conducting video review. A limited number of conductors will also have the opportunity to conduct the chamber work (early registrants and graduatre students will get priority). Registration deadline: June 1, 2011. Composition Competitions 2011 Chiayi City In celebration of the 20 th Anniversary of the Chiayi City International Band Festival and the 100 th Anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China, the Chiayi City government has announced a composition contest in conjunction with the 2011 Chiayi City International Band Festival. The contest is open to composers of all nationalities and ages, but composers may submit only one composition. Compositions, which may be in any form or style, should have a duration of from eight to fifteen minutes and be scored for Symphonic Band. Compositions must be original and unpublished and the work of only one composer. Composition may not be commissioned works or have won any previous prizes. The contest offers several prizes, including a NT$ 300,000 first prize, a NT$ 200,000 second prize and a NT$ 100,000 third prize. Judging will be in three stages. Compositions qualifying for the final stage will be performed at a concert by the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra at the Chiayi City Municipal Cultural Center Concert Hall on 1 July 2011. Tel. +33 7 60 18 20 10 Keene State College Department of Music »Call for Scores« The Keene State College Department of Music is offering a $1,500 cash prize to the successful winner of its 2011 CALL FOR SCORES. Composers of any age, residence, or citizenship are invited to submit works for concert band or for a subset of concert band. Submissions must be postmarked by April 1, 2011. Composers are required to pay an application fee of $25. Checks should be made payable to KSC Department of Music. Instrumentation: Please send acoustic works for concert band or a subset of concert band, Grade IV or V on a 6-level scale of difficulty. Works may include up to four percussionists and may include piano. Works of 5-15 minutes in length are preferred, though longer pieces may be considered. The 2011 winning composition will be showcased by The Keene State College Concert Band on Thursday, November 3, 2011 in the Main Theater of the Redfern Arts Center on Keene State Colleges campus.
