Composition Competitions<br />

<strong>2011</strong> Chiayi City<br />

In celebration of the 20 th Anniversary of the<br />

Chiayi City International B<strong>and</strong> Festival <strong>and</strong><br />

the 100 th Anniversary of the founding of the<br />

Republic of China, the Chiayi City government<br />

has announced a composition contest<br />

in conjunction with the <strong>2011</strong> Chiayi City<br />

International B<strong>and</strong> Festival. The contest is<br />

open to composers of all nationalities <strong>and</strong><br />

ages, but composers may submit only one<br />

composition. Compositions, which may be in<br />

any <strong>for</strong>m or style, should have a duration of<br />

from eight to fifteen minutes <strong>and</strong> be scored<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>Symphonic</strong> B<strong>and</strong>. Compositions must be<br />

original <strong>and</strong> unpublished <strong>and</strong> the work of<br />

only one composer. Composition may not be<br />

commissioned works or have won any<br />

previous prizes.<br />

The contest offers several prizes, including a<br />

NT$ 300,000 first prize, a NT$ 200,000<br />

second prize <strong>and</strong> a NT$ 100,000 third prize.<br />

Judging will be in three stages. Compositions<br />

qualifying <strong>for</strong> the final stage will be<br />

per<strong>for</strong>med at a concert by the National<br />

Taiwan Symphony Orchestra at the Chiayi<br />

City Municipal Cultural Center Concert Hall<br />

on 1 July <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Coup de Vents<br />

“Coups de Vents” organises the International<br />

Composition Competition <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>Symphonic</strong> B<strong>and</strong> with the support of the<br />

Conseil Général du Nord <strong>and</strong> the Conseil<br />

Général du Pas-de-Calais. The competition<br />

aims to enhance the repertoire of original<br />

music <strong>for</strong> Wind Orchestra. All styles <strong>and</strong><br />

musical <strong>for</strong>ms are accepted. The competition<br />

is open to participants of all ages <strong>and</strong> from<br />

all countries.<br />

Keene State College Department<br />

of Music »Call <strong>for</strong> Scores«<br />

The Keene State College Department of<br />

Music is offering a $1,500 cash prize to the<br />

successful winner of its <strong>2011</strong> CALL FOR<br />

SCORES. Composers of any age, residence,<br />

or citizenship are invited to submit works <strong>for</strong><br />

concert b<strong>and</strong> or <strong>for</strong> a subset of concert<br />

b<strong>and</strong>. Submissions must be postmarked by<br />

April 1, <strong>2011</strong>. Composers are required to<br />

pay an application fee of $25. Checks should<br />

be made payable to KSC Department of<br />

Music. Instrumentation: Please send acoustic<br />

works <strong>for</strong> concert b<strong>and</strong> or a subset of<br />

concert b<strong>and</strong>, Grade IV or V on a 6-level<br />

scale of difficulty. Works may include up to<br />

four percussionists <strong>and</strong> may include piano.<br />

Works of 5-15 minutes in length are<br />

preferred, though longer pieces may be<br />

considered. The <strong>2011</strong> winning composition<br />

will be showcased by The Keene State<br />

College Concert B<strong>and</strong> on Thursday, November<br />

3, <strong>2011</strong> in the Main Theater of the<br />

Redfern Arts Center on Keene State Colleges<br />

campus. The winning composer is invited,<br />

but not required, to attend this concert.<br />
