INTERNATIONAL SECTIONS Hungarian and East-Central European Association of Bands and Ensembles The Hungarian and East-Central European Association of Bands and Ensembles, a WASBE affiliate with headquarters in Hungary was founded in 2003. Its aim is to support Eastern European Wind Bands and Wind Band music, to preserve and develop the Symphonic Wind Band heritage of the region, and to act as a bridge between the wind band movement of Eastern Europe and the rest of the world, especially in cooperation with WASBE. The mission of the Association is to help provide information to the Eastern European Wind Bands, which struggle with serious financial limitations and other deficiencies and lack information about the Wind Band movement in the rest of the world. Through the Association’s cooperation with WASBE, members gain access to worldwide sources of information. The content of the Association’s Magazine, of which there is an English version edited by Anatoly Dudin, reflects the prominent place that the Eastern European Wind Bands have in the cultural life of the region, and provides information on the activities of the Association’s members and international events. The Association’s membership comprises all segments of the Wind Band movement, including conductors, composers, music teachers, amateur and professional instrumentalists, professional and amateur bands, and publishers from all of Eastern Europe. The membership comes from throughout Eastern Europe and Russia. Since 2002, the Association has organised six symposia for composers, conductors, publishers, music teachers and instrumentalists as well as regular exchange programs for bands and conductors, master classes, and gala concerts. Lectures at previous symposia have been presented by Dr. Alfred Reed, Dr. David McCormick, Col. László Dohos, László Dubrovay, Dr. Ricky Fleming, Dr. László Marosi, Jan Van der Roost, Harrie Janssen, James Cochran, Károly Neumayer, Dr. Leon J. Bly, Anatoly Dudin, Oleg Blokh, and Kamilló Lendvay with the intention of presenting the best performance practices from around the world as well as best practices from within Eastern Europe. Topics have included score analysis, rehearsal procedures, baton technique, teaching methods, repertory, selecting the proper music for a band, improving intonation, and adapting instrumentation for small bands. Discussions have been held on band seating arrangements, seat assignments, band tone 18 WASBE World
quality, systems for training Wind Bands in different countries, and philosophy of music. The best intermediate and advanced level Wind Bands from the region as well as internationally famous artists have presented symposium concerts, among them the Gyõr Symphonic Band (Ferenc Szabó, conductor), the University of Szeged Concert Band (József Csikota, conductor), the Tamási Concert Band (Gábor Markovics, conductor), the Concert Band of Kiskunfelegyhaza (Ferenc Jankovszki and Laszlo Toth, conductors), the Ránki György Music School Youth Band of Balatonföldvár (János Kapus, conductor), the Band of Szentes (Béla Mihály, condcutor), the Band of the Garrison of Hódmezővásárhely (István Kovács, conductor), the United Youth Band of the South-Plain Region (Zoltán Czirok, Béla Mihály, János Bozóki, conductors), the Festival Wind Orchestra of Tamási (Gábor Markovics, Ferenc Szabó, Erzsébet Sajti, József Csikota, conductors), the Gyõr Clarinet Band, the Voce d’Amore Clarinet Orchestra (conductor, Zoltan Kiss, conductor), the University of Szeged Brass Quintet, the Heavy Brass Guys – Tuba Quartet, Roland Szentpáli (tuba artist), and Zoltán Szőke (principal horn of the Hungarian National Opera). During the second week of July each year, the Association organizes an international arts academy and master class for Wind conductors at the University of Szeged. The main emphasis of the master class is repertoire for youth, especially beginner bands. The master class culminates with a concert, where all the young conductors have a chance to demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge. Further information concerning the master class may be found on the University of Szeged Music Department website: www.music.u-szeged.hu The Association has developed a system to grade and rank Wind Bands in order to bring the bands in its member countries in line with worldwide standards. This system helps analyse data about the bands, classify bands, and estimate their potential development and level of professionalism. The five categories in the qualification system are in accordance with international standard. The Association organized its first regional band competition in June 2010 in Balatonfoldvar, Hungary, at which twenty-five amateur bands participated in one of three categories: children, youth, and adult. The members of jury were Dr. László Marosi, Karoly Neumayer, Anatoly Dudin, Oleg Blokh, and Jozsef Csikota. The Association intends to hold a competition for conductors in summer of 2012. The Hungarian hosting of the 2013 WASBE Conference is a special honour and a milestone for the Wind Band movement of the region. In preparation for the 2013 WASBE Conference, the City of Pécs organized the Wind Music Grand Prix of Hungary – International Contest in July 2010 as part of the city’s celebration of its selection as the 2010 European Capital of Culture. During the Contest, twenty-three Wind Bands competed in four categories: original concert wind music, concert march music, entertainment wind music, and majorettes with wind band. The members of the juries were Kamilló Lendvay (H), Dennis L. Johnson (USA), Felix Hauswirth (CH), Odd-Terje Lysebo (N), Maurizio Billi (I), József Csikota (H), and László Dohos (H). In preparation for the WASBE Conference, the Hungarian and East-Central European Association aims to expand the Eastern European repertoire by encouraging the creation and publishing of new compositions for the Symphonic Band.
