ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE INDUSTRY Rivera Editores recently released two new compositions for Symphonic Wind Band – José Suñer Oriola’s Symphony No. 2 “Venus De Las Luces” and Oscar Navarro’s Libertadores. Both compositions were commissioned for and premiered at Sociedad Filarmónica Alteanense at the 39 th Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música Villa de Altea 2010. José Suñer Oriola’s seventeen and a half minute Symphony No. 2 is in two movements: a hectic El Quinto Sol and a calmer Venus de las Luces. Oscar Navarro’s sixteen minute Libertadores is in two parts with the first part portraying the Amazon River and its indigenous music and the second part devoted to South America’s two great liberators: Simón Bolívar and José de San Martin. Amazon.com, Inc. now distributes the new revised second edition of David Whitwell’s Concise History of the Wind Band. Modern performance editions by David Whitwell of original 18 th and 19 th Century Wind Band compositions are also now available at www.whitwellbooks.com. GIA Publications, Inc. recently released the 8 th volume in its Teaching Music through Performance in Band series along with a companion three disc CD recording by the North Texas Wind Symphony under the direction of Eugene Corporon of forty grade 2 and 3 compositions found in volume 8. GIA has also released the second and third volumes of its Developing Musicianship through Improvisation series by Eastman School of Music professors Christopher D. Azzara and Richard F. Grunow. Piles Editorial de Musica recently published Luis Serrano Alarcón’s Duende, which was commissioned by the University of St. Thomas Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Dr. Matthew George. Mitropa Music recently released the CD Belcanto (M-Disc 211-042-3) with six 19 th Century compositions in modern arrangements for wind band by Franco Cesarini. Three of the compositions – Amilcare Ponchielli’s Sinfonia per banda in b, Camillo De Nardis’s Universal Judgment and Saverio Mercadante’s Omaggio a Bellini – were originally composed for Wind Band. The other three works are the overtures to Gioacchino Rossini’s Tancredi, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and La Gazza Ladra. All compositions are performed by the Civica Filharmonica di Lugano under the direction of Cesarini. Brazilian Music Publications recently published Ricardo A. Silva’s grade 3 composition Baicatu. Maecenas has announced publication of Eternal Voices for Narrator, Soloists, Chorus and Wind Orchestra by composer Adam Gorb and librettist Ben Kaye. The work, which is a tribute to the men and women who have been killed and injured in the Afghanistan conflict, was premiered by the Exeter Festival Chorus and the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines with Sir Trevor Macdonald as narrator at Exeter Cathedral on 20 November 2010. The text for the thirty-five minutes, five movements work is drawn from news bulletins about the war as well as the war diary of Lieutenant John Thornton, who was killed in action in 2008. de haske recently released 1834 (Machera Impressions) by Jan Van der Roost and Tohru Takahashi’s transcriptions for Wind Band of the Hungarian Dances No. 5 and No. 6 by Johannes Brahms. Naxos recently released volume 8 in its J.P. Sousa: Music for Wind Band series with the British Royal Artillery Band under the direction of Sousa expert Keith Brion. The Naxos CD 8.559248 contains music from the operetta El Capitan, the suite At the King’s Court, and nine marches, including The Washington Post, The High School Cadets, The Crusader, Jack Tar and Comrades of the Legion. 38 WASBE World
