Taiwan Wind Ensemble<br />

Formed in 2004, the Taiwan Wind<br />

Ensemble (TWE) consists of talented wind<br />

musicians who are professors <strong>and</strong> b<strong>and</strong><br />

directors from all over the country. With Ms.<br />

Wen-wen Chou as resident conductor, Dr.<br />

Kan-Kuo Ho as first artistic director, <strong>and</strong> later<br />

succeeded by Mr. Toshio Akiyama in 2008,<br />

the TWE devotes to bring the Taiwan’s<br />

sound to the world. The ensemble keeps a<br />

close relationship with local composers <strong>and</strong><br />

commissions new works periodically. Works<br />

by Ching-Wen Chao, Tzyy-Sheng Lee, Yiu-<br />

Kwong Chung, Shu-Si Chen <strong>and</strong> Yu-Chou<br />

Chen have been premiered by the TWE <strong>and</strong><br />

have brought lots of attention, locally <strong>and</strong><br />

internationally. The ensemble has also<br />

worked with several internationally<br />

acclaimed maestros, including Francois<br />

Bailleul, Tsunanobu Kawamoto (the Sony<br />

Concert B<strong>and</strong>), Kanat Akhmetov (the State<br />

Wind Orchestra of Kazakhstan), Soichi<br />

Konagaya, Alain Crepin, Dominique Gable,<br />

Gary Green, <strong>and</strong> Guy Touvron, <strong>and</strong> all these<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances acclaimed high praise.<br />

Lian-Chang Kuo (guest conductor)<br />

Holding Diplome Superieur 1984, Ecole<br />

Normale de Musique de Paris, France, Mr.<br />

Kuo is an active conductor <strong>and</strong> professor in<br />

Taiwan. He was the conductor of Ensemble<br />

Instrumental International, Paris, France,<br />

Taipei Chinese<br />

Orchestra, <strong>and</strong><br />

Youth B<strong>and</strong> of<br />

China Youth<br />

Corps, Taipei,<br />

Taiwan. Mr. Kuo<br />

has also worked<br />

with major orchestras, wind ensembles,<br />

Chinese orchestras, modern chamber music<br />

groups, <strong>and</strong> several maestros including<br />

Yumiko Sakuma, Si-Qing Lu, Roger Boutry,<br />

Guy Touvron, Robert Altken, Andras<br />

AdorJan, Shigenori Kudo, etc. Mr. Kuo is a<br />

professor at the Music Department of the Fu<br />

The Taiwan Wind Ensemble not only<br />

includes classic wind music in its programs,<br />

but also produces cross-border productions<br />

<strong>and</strong> family concerts. The ensemble has<br />

successfully combined live wind music with<br />

flamenco <strong>and</strong> ballroom dancing, <strong>and</strong><br />

attracted people who are not regular guests<br />

of concerts. In addition, the TWE annual<br />

family concerts, usually corporate with<br />

theaters, are a “must see” to many families.<br />

With these ef<strong>for</strong>ts, the TWE has broadened<br />

the audience base, <strong>and</strong> introduced the wind<br />

music to more <strong>and</strong> more people.<br />

Dance” by Wen-Yeh Chiang, “Rententir,<br />

Archetype, Exuberant dances” by Ching-<br />

Wen Chao, <strong>and</strong> “Wayfarer’s <strong>March</strong>” by Dai<br />

Yi-Qing, <strong>and</strong> a double-CD album “Festive<br />

Celebration – Yiu-kwong Chung’s Works <strong>for</strong><br />

Wind Ensemble”, conducted by the<br />

composer himself.<br />

Wen-Wen Chou<br />

(resident conductor)<br />

Ms. Wen-Wen Chou was born in Chang-<br />

Hua County, Taiwan, <strong>and</strong> received her BA<br />

from the Music Department at National<br />

Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) in 1993.<br />

While doing graduate work in conducting at<br />

the NTNU, she received instructions from<br />

Prof. Chang Ta-Sheng (<strong>for</strong>mer Music<br />

Director of National Symphony Orchestra,<br />

Taiwan), Liao Nien-Fu (the Music Director of<br />

Taipei Century Symphony Orchestra,<br />

Taiwan), <strong>and</strong><br />

Maestro Vladimir<br />

Vais (<strong>for</strong>mer<br />

conductor of the<br />

Bolshoi Opera<br />

House in Russia).<br />

As a conductor,<br />

Chou has founded<br />

the Youth Vacation<br />

Orchestra in 1993,<br />

which has previously toured the isl<strong>and</strong> with<br />

such noteworthy soloists as violinist Su<br />

Shien-Ta (concertmaster of Taipei Sinfonietta<br />

& Philharmonic Orchestra). She is director of<br />

NTNU B<strong>and</strong> since 1993 <strong>and</strong> has conducted it<br />

in many b<strong>and</strong> festivals such as the tenth<br />

annual Asia Pacific B<strong>and</strong> Festival at the<br />

Sydney Opera House. From 1999 to 2002,<br />

Chou conducted the Wind Ensemble of<br />

National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra<br />

(NTSO) doing several wonderful concert<br />

tours. In 2003 Ms. Chou led the B<strong>and</strong> of<br />

High School of NTNU to win the Champion<br />

of National Music Contest. They were<br />

invited to the 7 th Hamamatsu International<br />

B<strong>and</strong> Festival, Japan. In 2004, she conducted<br />

a successful European concert tour with the<br />

Orchestra of “University System of Taiwan”.<br />

In 2004, Ms. Chou was invited to be the<br />

resident conductor of Tao Yuan <strong>Symphonic</strong><br />

B<strong>and</strong>. At the same year she has founded<br />

“Taiwan Wind Ensemble (TWE)” <strong>and</strong><br />

conducted it in “B<strong>and</strong> Contest by Taiwan<br />

B<strong>and</strong> <strong>Association</strong> (TBA)” <strong>and</strong> many other<br />

successful ones. In 2005, Ms. Chou was<br />

assigned as assistant conductor of Taipei<br />

Symphony Orchestra. 2006, she was elected<br />

as TBA Board member <strong>and</strong> conducted Hung-<br />

Dao Alumni B<strong>and</strong> in APBDA. Since 2007,<br />

Ms. Chou was appointed conductor of<br />

NTSO Youth B<strong>and</strong>. In 2008, she did<br />

“Russian Graffiti” with Sound By Ourselves<br />

Wind Ensemble as guest conductor, <strong>and</strong><br />

participated the Singapore International<br />

Conducting Workshop under the direction of<br />

maestro Douglas Bostock. Besides she led<br />

the Hung-Dao Alumni B<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> NTSO<br />

Youth B<strong>and</strong> to per<strong>for</strong>m in 2008 APBDA<br />

concerts <strong>and</strong> conducted the Yi-Lan County<br />

Guo-Hua Junior High School Orchestra to<br />

win the music competition again. In addition<br />

concerts with TWE include: “The Sorcerer’s<br />

Apprentice’s Fantasy <strong>World</strong>” cooperated<br />

with the Clown Pantomime Theater, joint<br />

concert with Japan Omiya City Community<br />

B<strong>and</strong> under direction of maestro Toshio<br />

Akiyama, <strong>and</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance in “Chiayi City<br />

International B<strong>and</strong> Festival”.<br />

At present Chou leads various school<br />

ensembles in the Taipei area such as NTNU<br />

B<strong>and</strong>, in addition to her responsibilities as<br />

resident conductor of Taiwan Wind<br />

Ensemble, <strong>and</strong> Youth Vacation Orchestra.<br />
