FAMILY MATTERS
34: Centenarians Stay Married
“To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with.”
-- Mark Twain, author (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910)
This one is interesting because almost every centenarian we have
interviewed was married for a long time but hasn’t been married for a
long time. In other words, their spouses died many years ago after a
long and mostly happy marriage. They enjoyed the benefits of a long
successful marriage but didn’t have the stress and burden of caring
for an elderly life partner.
Numerous studies have indicated that married people live, on
average, longer and happier lives than single people. It seems it’s
important to choose your life partner carefully and then stick together
“until death do us part” if you want to live to a really old age.
