Tax agenda for Federal Opposition Leader

Federal taxation was on the
agenda during a recent
discussion with Federal Leader
of the Opposition, Hon. Tony
Abbott MP when he visited
Adelaide in late March.
MTA Executive Director John
Chapman raised the industry’s
concerns with the Henry
Review of Taxation and its
possible impacts on Fringe
Benefit Taxes applying to motor
vehicles and also the unfairness
of the Luxury Car Tax.
“We need to keep our concerns
on taxation directly in front of
our elected leaders,” Mr
Chapman said.
“We cannot afford to have our
industry threatened by taxation
changes.”
Mr Chapman also raised the
issue of training of students
from overseas in ways which was
not supported by the Australian
retail motor industry.
“While the Federal
Government has made some
changes to clean up a pretty
ordinary system where many
overseas students have been left
without proper training after
paying large amounts of money,
we wanted to make sure the
Federal Opposition understands
our position,” Mr Chapman
said.
“We also sought Mr Abbott’s
support for our automotive
trades remaining on the new
skills shortage lists being
produced by the Department of
Immigration and Citizenship
through Skills Australia.”
