One step in the future and one the SA Deputy Premier South Australia’s Deputy Premier and Treasurer, Hon. Kevin Foley MP, was pleasantly surprised when he visited his old school which is now the home of the Motor Trade Association’s Group Training Scheme at Royal Park. Mr Foley was at the MTA’s training facility to officially hand over an ex State Government Toyota Prius which will be used for hybrid and electric vehicle training. Mr Foley was a secondary school student at what was called the Royal Park High School for three and half years back in the 1970s. While he did not complete his secondary schooling, he is the most wellknown former student having risen to the second highest political job in the state. As he walked through the old administration block which has now been converted to include two specialised classrooms for spray paint and mechanical lectures, Mr Foley reflected on his time there. “Oh I remember this area,” he said. “I had to wait here before I got to see the Principal when I was in trouble.” Asked how many times that occurred, he quickly said “only a couple.” Mr Foley was taken on a quick tour of the old auditorium which is now used to house many training aid vehicles donated by Holden and Mitsubishi. He was quite taken by the MTA’s oldest but pristinely restored FJ Holden which obviously brought back a few memories. He was then introduced to first year light and heavy mechanical groups. Congratulating the young apprentices on choosing an exciting trade he asked about their pay. When they told him it could be better, the Deputy Premier replied “Yes I can understand that at the moment but when you are qualified you will be well rewarded.” Touring the new $2.7 million workshop (L-R): MTA-GTS General Manager Training & Employment – Paul Good, Deputy Premier – the Hon. Kevin Foley MP, MTA Executive Director – John Chapman. “You will have a skill which you can take anywhere in the world.” The old gymnasium which is now the light vehicle workshop still had a few reminders for the Deputy Premier of its past with its rebound ace floor and old basketball scoreboard still in place.
