USE OF CHEMICALS:
A risk assessment should be conducted on all chemicals in the workplace before their
use.
- All chemicals to be used as per the Workplace Health and Safety Act, 1995.
- Safety equipment required as per the MSDS MUST be supplied and
instructions and supervision given to those handling the respective
chemicals.
- Adequate ventilation or respiratory apparatus must be supplied and worn by
those in the vicinity.
- A copy of the MSDS for the chemicals in use must be kept easily accessible
in each area of the workplace, with Master Copy in the Administration Office
at front desk.
- Any spills of chemicals must be cleaned up immediately as per the MSDS.
DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS:
- Hazardous substances must be disposed of by the Local Council
- If the chemical is not permitted in the municipal drainage/sewerage system,
it must be decanted into containers and disposed of by the Local Council.
- Any acidic solution must drain into a neutralising tank before entering the
sewerage system.
- Part 2 – Environmental Duties of the Environmental Protection Act 1994
outlines a General Environmental Duty which states:
36. (1) A person must not carry out any activity that causes, or is likely to
cause, environmental harm unless the person takes all
reasonable and practicable measures to prevent or minimise the
harm.
