Please Note: The injured person, if conscious, can hold a dressing on their own
wound until the first aid attendant has gloves on.
Eyes:
Protective eye wear should be worn if there is a chance of splattering of blood.
Glasses are better than nothing.
Rinse eyes well for 10 minutes if splattering does occur. The risk of transmission in
this manner is low but these precautions should be followed.
Contaminated Clothing:
Contaminated clothing or cloths are to be removed as soon as possible and washed
separately in soap and water. Gloves are to be worn if washing these items by hand.
Hands should be washed after removing or touching contaminated clothing.
Mouth to Mouth Resuscitation:
There have been no reported cases in which the AIDS virus has been transmitted by
mouth to mouth resuscitation. Hepatitis B, glandular fever and other viruses are more
likely to be spread through saliva.
All possible precautions to avoid cross infection should be used.
In each first aid kit there are disposable masks. First aid attendants must know how to
use them.
Use of Splinter Probes:
If probes are used to remove surface splinters the following procedures should be
followed:
- The probes should be disposable. They must only be used once.
- They should be discarded into a puncture proof container. The container
should be sealed and disposed of correctly.
- Hands should be washed before and after and gloves worn while removing
the splinter.
