In the creation of AVERTi, an anagram for Advanced Verified Early Risk Technology, doctors Sandra and Peter Muran applied the Functional Medicine approach to the prevention of breast cancer. AVERTi is a comprehensive breast health program using a proven estrogen metabolite laboratory test to measure a women’s early risk for breast cancer before disease ever occurs. For those shown to be at risk, the AVERTi Breast Health Program engages women in a personalized clinical and life style intervention to measurably reduce her risk. A breakthrough, in not only letting women know if they are at risk; but the AVERTi approach providing a way to confidently reduce the risk by measuring the reduction. National statistics report that one out of every eight women will encounter breast cancer in her lifetime. The Murans were motivated by their female patients who were not satisfied in waiting around to see if they would become that “one.” They wanted to help women proactively reduce their risk. These researchers had invented an estrogen metabolite laboratory test to measure a woman’s risk for breast cancer which had only been available for research endeavors. This laboratory measures the metabolites of estrogen that represent estrogen which has “gone down an inflammatory pathway” becoming the precursor to damaging a woman’s DNA in a way that can result in breast cancer. AVERTi is dedicated to placing the tools for prevention of breast cancer in the hands of women and the physicians who care for them. In conjunction with Longevity Healthcare, they offer women comprehensive breast health analysis, teach breast health basics, and preform thermal imaging services which, according to Muran, is the most effective method of screening breast health in conjunction with this specific new estrogen laboratory for prevention of disease. They have also created the AVERTi Breast Health Kit to support the modification of estrogen’s metabolic pathways through nutrient support. The Murans funded an independent pilot study based on the original research in conjunction with the University of Nebraska researchers. Women from the community volunteered to have their current risk for breast cancer measured using the estrogen metabolite laboratory. Based on those results, the Murans developed a personalized functional medicine approach tailored to each individual. Each woman followed her customized program, involving both clinical and lifestyle factors, for 90 days and then repeated the estrogen metabolite laboratory to see if her risk became lower than her original measure. Results showed that every woman who was reasonably compliant with her program was able to measurably reduce her risk for breast disease. Since then, the Murans have teamed with a commercial laboratory to make this exciting estrogen metabolite laboratory test available for the first time so a woman can quantify her risk for breast disease. In addition, they are working with professional physician organizations to disseminate this new knowledge and findings to practitioners who can then work with their female patients to measurably reduce risk. “We’re excited about the prospects. We feel our biggest success is on the horizon—within six to nine months—when these tools are going to be available to healthcare consumers and not sitting in research laboratories. Imagine the human and economic savings if we were able to reduce the risk of breast cancer for women,” said Muran. “Everyone knows a woman who has suffered from breast cancer.” While Muran had always worked in healthcare, including serving as director of a hospice program in Orange County, and involved in long-term care in Los Angeles, it wasn’t until she became a mother that her interests turned to nutrition. “Twenty-eight years ago I had a son who was allergic to everything in the American diet,” she said, adding that there wasn’t a lot of guidance on the subject at that time. “There’s nothing like a motivated mother in terms of her infant son. I began to educate myself and that eventually evolved into my practice, and obtaining my PhD in nutrition.” Muran estimates that 60% of Americans have some sort of digestive issue. “If you own a high performance car and put kerosene in it, it doesn’t work very well. It’s the same way with our body. You have to put high-test fuel in it so it performs well. And, that’s the role of nutrition and digestion,” she explained. Among the general nutritional recommendations Muran shares with patients is to eat healthy protein-based snacks including nuts, nut butters, and berries, and to drink filtered or coconut water. “Coconut water meets your needs for trace minerals, it energizes you and keeps your electrolytes balanced,” she said. And, as a final suggestion, Muran offers this eye-opener: “When you see something that’s enriched, don’t eat it. In the processing it has been so depleted of nutrient value that the Food and Drug Administration required manufacturers to add back in some nutrient value.
