EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF LD AND ADHD IS CRITICAL
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that 4.9
million children, ages 3-17, were diagnosed with a learning disability in
2012. Additionally, more than 5 million children in that same age range
had attention deficit disorder (ADHD), with boys almost three times as
likely as girls to be diagnosed as having it.
Ronald Cantwell, M.D., who is board certified in neuro-developmental
pediatrics, has made the study
of children with Learning Disabilities and ADHD
his life’s work. He is an innovator in diagnostic testing, as
evidenced by the recent launch of the Children’s Diagnostic
Learning Tests. These are two assessment
tools created by Cantwell,
whose goal was to design simple,
research-based tests that preferably
did not need to be administered by a
psychologist. The tests are called the
Children’s Learning Disabilities Test
(CLDT) and the Children’s Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Test
(CADHDT).
Learning Disabilities and ADHD are
lifelong neurological disorders that
are present from birth, according to
Cantwell. “They don’t go away and
early treatment is essential. They are the two most common
causes of children failing to read and failing to progress academically,
and of those who exhibit bad spelling and especially
bad writing – atrocious doctor-style writing,” he
explained.
Cantwell has published many professional papers on
child development, having conducted considerable research
in Learning Disabilities and ADHD within Florida’s
Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth largest
school district in the United States. “Within a school system,
getting a child diagnosed with Learning Disabilities has always
been a long, drawn-out process.
In the meantime, the child tends to fall
behind their peers and lose self-confidence.”
said Cantwell. One advantage
of the CLDT and CADHDT offered
through the Children’s Diagnostic
Learning Tests is avoiding the waiting
time that can be up to a year for psychological
testing.
Currently, no other tests compare
with the Cantwell online model, which
is capable of identifying the child’s
learning strengths and weaknesses as
well as identifying the child’s learning
style, whether it is visual or auditory.
