That blend of conventional religious polemic with a newer conception<br />

of sodomy as a specific ‘feature of character’ was more compatible<br />

with popular responses to men such as Nicholas Sension than had<br />

been official Puritan ideology. The mid-eighteenth-century case of<br />

Stephen Gorton highlights this blend of perceptions. Gorton, minister<br />

at the Baptist church in New London, Connecticut, was suspended<br />

from his pastorate in 1756 for ‘unchaste behavior with his fellow men.’<br />

Gorton had apparently exhibited an attraction to men ‘in many<br />

instances through a number of years.’ In 1757 the General Meeting of<br />

Baptist Churches judged that his behavior indicated ‘an inward disposition<br />

… towards the actual commission of a sin of so black and dark a<br />

dye.’ The meeting did not explain what it meant by ‘inward disposition,’<br />

but went on to recommend that Gorton absent himself from the<br />

Lord’s Supper for ‘several months at least’ and give ‘effectual evidence’<br />

of his repentance and reformation. 30<br />

The assumption that Gorton could overcome his proclivities suggests<br />

that the meeting viewed his ‘sin’ in terms consistent with earlier religious<br />

formulations, as a expression of inner corruption that sinners<br />

could defeat with Christ’s support. Yet although the phrase ‘inward<br />

disposition’ was not being used to denote a permanent sexual orientation,<br />

it did depict Gorton’s depravity as expressing itself in a particular<br />

and consistent form. The plain facts of Gorton’s sexual history<br />

prompted the meeting to recognize attraction to men as an ongoing<br />

facet of his life. The official judgment against him was a diplomatic<br />

and subtle response to the situation: it pushed religious categories to<br />

their very limits in accommodating local impressions of Gorton’s<br />

behavior and also printed representations of sodomy as a persistent,<br />

specific impulse; yet it used language in ways that did not actually<br />

breach the parameters of theological discourse.<br />

Gorton managed to survive more or less unscathed, despite his<br />

sexual reputation. Though ‘many’ members left the church ‘on that<br />

account,’the remaining members voted by a two-thirds majority to<br />

restore him to the pastorate, once he acknowledged and confessed his<br />

sins. This case suggests a remarkable forbearance toward individuals<br />

attracted to members of the same sex. Indeed there were even fewer<br />

prosecutions for sodomy in the eighteenth than in the seventeenth<br />

century. 31 In addition to the factors that had worked against formal<br />

censure of even those notorious for sodomy in seventeenth-century<br />

New England, three additional developments in the late colonial<br />

period militated against prosecution. First, the courts paid less and less<br />

attention to moral regulation in general as their caseloads became
