A Japanese folktale picture book. A skilful
carpenter, who had been asked to build a bridge
over a rapid river, was watching the stream and
pondering his task when an ogre appeared in
the water. He offered to do the task in exchange
for the carpenter’s eyeballs. The bridge was
completed in a flash. When the carpenter begged
the ogre not to take his eyes, he said he would let
him go if the carpenter could guess the ogre’s real
name. A similar story to ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, children
age 4 to 8 can enjoy the thrill of the conversation
between the ogre and the carpenter. Pictures
drawn using traditional Japanese techniques
complement the atmosphere of the folktale.
日 本 の 昔 話 絵 本 。 腕 のいい 大 工 が 流 れのはやい 川
に 橋 をかけるように 頼 まれる。 大 工 が 川 を 見 なが
ら 考 えていると、 鬼 が 川 の 中 から 現 れる。 鬼 は、
大 工 が 目 玉 をよこせば 橋 をかけてやるといい、あ
っというまに 橋 をかけてしまう。 大 工 が 目 玉 をと
らないでくれと 頼 むと、 鬼 は 自 分 の 名 前 を 当 てた
ら 許 してやる、という。グリム 昔 話 の「ルンペル
シュティルツヘン」に 似 た 話 。 子 ども 達 は 鬼 と 大
工 のやりとりをどきどきしながら 楽 しむ。 日 本
画 の 技 法 を 生 かした 絵 が、お 話 の 雰 囲 気 にあっ
ている。

おつきさまこんばんは [Good evening, dear moon]

”It’s nighttime. / Look, the sky is really, really dark.
/ Now look above the roof. / There’s a light. / It’s
the moon! / Good evening, dear Moon!” Two cats
on the roof are cheerfully greeting the beautiful,
rising moon. However, a big cloud passes, hiding
the moon’s face behind it. “Please move, Cloud, we
can’t see the Moon’s face,” the two cats cry. Then
the cloud gradually passes over, and the smiling
moon comes out again... The moon’s grace and
its bright face are beautifully depicted in warm
and soft strokes. Each illustration in this handy,
square format abundantly describes the gentle
atmosphere of the night.
「よるに なったよ/ほら おそらが くらい
くらい/おや やねのうえが あかるくなった/
おつきさまだ/おつきさま こんばんは」 屋 根 に
のぼった 二 匹 のねこは、きれいなお 月 さまにあい
さつします。けれど、おおきなくもがあらわれ
て、お 月 さまをかくしてしまいました。「くもさ
ん どいて/おつきさまの おかおが みえな
い」ねこたちが 大 きな 声 でさけぶと、くもは 静 か
に 去 り、ふたたびきれいなお 月 さまのお 顔 があら
われました。やさしく 輝 くお 月 さまの 顔 が、あた
たかく 柔 らかな 筆 致 で 描 かれている。 子 どもが 手
に 取 りやすい 大 きさの 四 角 の 版 型 に、あたたかな
夜 の 雰 囲 気 がおさめられている。

ぐるんぱのようちえん [Grumpa’s Kindergarten]

Grumpa, the young elephant, was ordered to
start work. He went to work for a biscuit maker,
a shoe maker, a car maker, and so on. However,
his efforts were in vain because all he could make
were jumbo-sized goods that nobody would buy.
Grumpa was very disappointed and began to think
that he would never be able to work properly. Just
then, he happened upon a busy mother with 12
children, and so found a job which would make
him the happiest elephant in the world. He set to
work creating a wonderful playground with the
huge things he had already made.
Children love the elephant-sized things and enjoy
Grumpa’s success story. Simple pictures and
a cheerful atmosphere attract little children.
ぐるんぱはさびしがりやの 象 。ぐるんぱは 働 きに
出 たけれど、 大 きすぎるビスケットを 作 って 追 い
出 され、 大 きすぎる 靴 を 作 って 追 い 出 され、どこ
へ 行 っても 失 敗 ばかり。 追 い 出 されてしょんぼり
していると、 子 だくさんのお 母 さんに、 子 どもた
ちの 世 話 を 頼 まれる。
ぐるんぱは 幼 稚 園 を 開 き、 特 大 のビスケットや 靴
で 子 どもたちと 遊 ぶ。ぐるんぱは 幸 せな 象 。 子 ど
もたちは、 象 のサイズの 大 きな 道 具 やおもちゃが
大 好 きで、ぐるんぱの 成 功 を 一 緒 に 喜 ぶ。 元 気 な
雰 囲 気 の 素 朴 な 絵 は、 小 さな 子 どもに 人 気 。
