wanted to leave a chink. However, a tutor put a
step forward. She not only escorted him to the
toilet, but also taught him to use the leg to pull
the door towards himself and then open the
lock when he encountered the same situation.
When he successfully opened the door with his
leg from inside, he went out with a smile and he
thereafter lively answered others that he did not
fear to go to toilet alone!
They are the children with autism that I met
when I volunteered in a social interaction group.
How lovable, genuine and obedient are they
though they are often easily misunderstood
as “impolite, stupid and odd”. Through the
interaction with the children, I witnessed
their talents and abilities and with some
assistance, they can learn, grow and overcome
challenge like most of us. After interacting with
these children, I wish to see lives with more
possibility and the society with more justice. I
would like people in sadness, difficulties or lost
to have more joyfulness, warmth and meaning
in their lives. Yet, that is not enough as this
cannot alter their well being totally; we have
to be with them, voice out the unjust and alter
the situation to become better for everyone.
Like helping the children with autism, instead
of dragging them with more training to fulfill the
society’s standard, I long for the scene that we
walk to them, facilitate them to grow and search
for their own direction of life. If we only see
the impossibility in them, I would like all of us
to think carefully what else we can change to
make the society and life we desired possible.
