Preface
Heartfelt Thanks to HSBC Social Work
Scholarship Donor
As the Department Chairperson, I feel most
honorable and proud to see the outstanding
and enthusiastic social work students to be
awarded the HSBC Social Work Scholarship
offered by the Hong Kong Bank Foundation.
Heartfelt thanks for the donor’s unfailing
support to our Department and social work
education. The Scholarship undoubtedly is a
great encouragement and recognition for our
students’ achievement.
Throughout these years, one of the
happiest news the Department has had is to
continue enrolling high caliber undergraduate
and postgraduate students who are motivated
to study social work. As a professional and
academic department, our goals and missions
are to assist our students to develop personally,
a c a d e m i c a l l y a n d p r o fe s s i o n a l l y. O u r
Scholarship holders treasure this invaluable
opportunity to share with the donor on their
personal and professional growth during
their studies, and their aspirations to become
competent social workers committing to the
welfare and future development of society
locally, nationally and internationally. They
have spent a lot of time and effort in preparing
their appreciation articles, which express their
gratitude towards the donor.
Finally, I like to take this opportunity to
congratulate all the scholarship holders. I also
wish to thank the Hong Kong and Shanghai
Banking Corporation for the annual donation
of the Scholarship. In particular, I have to
extend my deepest appreciation to Miss
Kathy Wong, Secretary, Advisory Committee,
The Hong Kong Bank Foundation, Prof. Lam
Ching-man and Prof. Steven Ngai, who spared
much of their time every year in interviewing
the applicants of the Scholarship. I am also
indebted to the contribution of my colleagues,
Ms. Judia Yue, Miss Leung Cheuk-ki and Miss
Sharon Yip. Without their guidance to the
students and administrative support, I am afraid
that this meaningful collection can hardly be
published on schedule.
享 其 從 學 習 中 所 得 到 的 個 人 及 專 業 成 長 的 機 會 ;
A JOURNEY OF PERSONAL GROWTH
Studying in the Department of Social Work
is a life-changing and eye-opening journey.
I am pleased that I did learn a lot of social
work knowledge and more importantly, got
chances to do self-reflections. I especially
want to highlight two of my experiences,
“Empowerment” and “Fellowship”.
Empowerment
Being a social worker is, indeed, like on a
journey of safeguarding and upholding social
justice and standing on the side of the egg. In
the past, I thought life was always a challenge.
Grassroot workers in Hong Kong had to work
16 hours a day and sadly, some of their living
conditions were still far from acceptable. A
question, then, popped up in my mind, “What
can I do to rectify this poor situation?”
However, after these years of learning in
the Department of Social Work, I gradually find
that the question should be raised as “What
am I willing to do for the society?” instead. The
change from “What can I do...” to “What am I
willing to do…”, is a perfectly good example
of empowerment. It also tells clearly that
everything is started from us.
Fellowship
There is an widely- held axiom that social
work is built upon three core competences,
which are “Values”, “Knowledge” and “Skills”.
The three of them are inter-related. Even if
people are equipped with extensive knowledge
and skills in social work, without strong and
uncompromisable values, they will walk to a
wrong direction soon. However, if people solely
own the values, but in lack of knowledge and
skills, they are still not capable to handle the
diverse needs of the service users.
Values, knowledge and skills are three
essential elements of a social worker. However,
during my study in the department, I found
that the support and care from classmates and
teachers were also extraordinary important
and it becomes the fourth social work core
competence. I am glad that we are not merely
learning partners, but also fellows.
There is an inspiring quote by
Schopenhauer,
“People is great not because of their
hegemonic power, but their magnificent spirit.”
(English Translation)
I would like to express my heartfulthanks
to all the teachers and friends in the
Department of Social Work, for their generosity
and for coloring my life.
You all are great people.
OUT STANDING STUDENT
Scholarship is a word that really far
away from my mind. From Kindergarten to
the road of University, I am not named as ‘an
outstanding student’. Similar to the majority
of the same age, I spent most of the time
invisibly hidden from teacher’s attention and
care in my secondary school year. I also failed
in competitions and dividing practices that
usually distinguishines ability by academic
performance. ‘Losers identity’ filled me up in
my teenage. However, learning to be a social
worker was a self-help process and indeed was
a tipping point to me. Improving communication
with others, gradual self-understanding and
self-acceptance in social work learning became
an empowerment to me that the core social
work elements give me the inspiration to grow,
to broaden my horizon continuously.
Looking back in my personal journey in the
welfare field, the path was tough with the very
beginning to work as a clerical assistant, then
as a welfare worker to the road of a professional
helper as a social work assistant with my
formal and professional learning and training in
Social Work. I have been keenly aware of my
dedication and interest in social work practice
but it was not easy to struggle in becoming an
effective social worker without setbacks in my
work. Now, I am noted that those experiences
are all good lessons for me to gain wisdom and
to consolidate the professional foundation. The
exposure and encounter to different clientele
also enable me to become a well-rounded
professional worker.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking
Corporation for the Scholarship. I was very
happy and appreciative to be selected as
one of the recipient. The scholarship to me,
undoubtedly, is a great encouragement. More
importantly, it is not only beyond its meaning in
recognizing my academic achievement but also
in echoing my endeavor about the important
themes in my life process and social work
practice.
MY DREAM IN LORD
Graduation means a new life stage. Life
is a kind of memory accumulation. Our stories
create our future. The three-year study in Social
Work develops my dream.
I was first inspired about my career life
by the first field work experience. Serving
children with special needs in residential home
care setting was a special and meaningful
experience to me. I enjoyed getting along
and even living with them in a home-like
environment. Although sometimes their
behaviors and attitude made the staff and me
angry, it was all about our in-depth relationship,
and care and love. Indeed service users
living in this setting were the group of people
marginalized by the society. Their academic
performance and moral behaviors failed to
match with the standards in the society. Thus,
they lacked concern and recognition. I was
passionate to serve in this setting as I strongly
believed they deserved companion and love.
My passion fermented in my heart till the
second field work.
My non-local field work experience further
seeded my dream. The brand new environment,
working practice and living style scared me a lot.
It was hard for me to adapt to the heavy workloads
and new working aspect. I was stressful to fight
a lone battle and hence I prayed a lot to lift all
my tears and difficulties to Lord. I was so grateful
that He sent supportive and caring angels to
keep up my work there. After that, I was moved to
response His love through my future career.
My dream does come true. I am going to
serve in a gospel drug treatment centre after
graduation. Drug addicts fail to find satisfaction
so they chose to take drugs. It is somehow a fatal
choice in physical, psychological perspectives
and even in prospects. However, I believe that
God’s love is their only rescue and satisfaction.
I wish my serving in the centre would be a flame
and blessing to their live.
I wish you can explore your dream in these
three years and realize it finally.
A LETTER TO MY FIRST PLACEMENT
SUPERVISOR
Dear Thomas,
How are you doing? It has already been
a year since I first met you in Vancouver last
summer. It is so hot here these days. I start
to miss the soothing breeze and warming
sunshine in Vancouver.
Time flies. Last summer, I was still a
social work rookie who had no practical
experience. Now, I am already a fresh graduate
who is going to step into society and work
as a registered social worker. Memories and
learning do not always fade with time. What you
taught me in those three months still remain in
my heart.
guidance, I learnt to be flexible and start where
the clients were. You taught me that social
worker, after all, is a helper.
During my second placement as a medical
social worker, I kept reminding myself to see
what my clients needed most. In the general
hospital, many clients are tortured by serious
illnesses and their physical conditions capture
their greatest concerns. “It is no use talking
to you. We can only talk about my problems.
But you are not a doctor and you cannot help
me,” One client said to me. Perhaps, this is
R e c a l l i n g t h e d a y s i n S U C C E S S
Employment Center, I remember I experienced
quite a lot of struggles and hardships. I did not
know what a social worker “should do” in order
to help clients. You told me that I had limited
myself with classroom knowledge. You told me
that relationship building need not start with
an interview session, that counseling need
not be bound to a counseling room and that,
true in some sense. I could not plan medical
treatment for my physically ill clients. Still, as a
social worker, I believed there was something
more I could do other than providing “talking
cure”. For example, with the help of our second
supervisor and mentors, my field mate and I
conducted a support group in which we did
body exercises as well as therapeutic sharing
activities with our clients. Even though I was not
a physiotherapist or occupational therapists, I
knew teaching body exercises was something I
“should do” as my clients would like to acquire
bodily comforts.
After these three years of learning, I realize
that social work spectrum can be very broad.
However, I believe the essence of this helping
profession never changes. That is, we have to
“start where the client is”. I wish that these five
words would be embodied in contacts with my
clients in the coming future.
Take care and keep in touch.
Regards,
FULL OF GRACE - STARTING MY SOCIAL WORK JOURNEY
Two years ago, I quitted my full time job
and decided to become a full time social work
student. I remembered that many people did
not think that it was a wise decision. However, I
could say that it was one of the best decisions
I have made in my life as I gained a lot in this
two-year study. I had professional growth
as well as personal growth. It was a fruitful
experience.
When I reviewed my placement experience,
I was glad that I had a taste of different aspects
of social work, such as launching a new
center, receiving phone calls from children
and organizing promotional event. I learnt that
social workers had to be all-rounded. I would
prepare myself for meeting the challenges of
work.
On the other hand, there were many
unforgettable memories in my placement
experiences. I worked in a children and youth
center for my first placement. I remembered
that I met a child who was six years old. He
caught my eyes when I first met him in a
group. He talked about death and ghost. He
never follow the rules. People might think that
he was a trouble-maker. However, I knew
that he had some special needs as a happy
child would not talk about the darkness so
often. In an occasion, I got a chance to talk
to him individually. He talked about his family
while he was drawing a picture. Through
the conversation, I understood that he was
angry about his family. Indeed, his family was
undergoing some difficulties. Since he did
not know how to express his feelings verbally,
he tried to show people how he felt by his
behaviors. After that, his family received
counseling and support. I was glad to see
that he became a happy child who always
wore a smile. In this experience, I understood
that it was so important to have empathy and
unconditional positive regards towards my
clients. When I built a trustful relationship with
them, they were more willing to share their
needs. I learnt to respect all of my clients and
listen to their stories without judgment.
Last but not least, I would like to thank our
donor HSBC who awarded me with scholarship
and recognized my effort in the past two years.
I would also like to thank my teachers cordially
for their wholehearted teaching and genuine
sharing of their life experiences as well as
my dear classmates who always support and
encourage me.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
The study in Social Work has widened
and deepened my understanding towards the
disadvantaged and how they are affected by
the environment. In the three years of study, I
began to ask myself how unique is the study
of Social Work or being a social worker? Why
do we study, work and serve so hard? I realise
there is a vision and mission in most of the
people who study, teach and practise social
work. What do they want to see or long for? I
wish to tell you three stories and how do they
make me realize what am I looking forward to.
Alan was a lovely boy who loved to ask
questions. However, when other children
wanted to treat him snacks, he would lean
backwards and escape. Other children and
adults found his behavior impolite and odd. One
day, I saw him running away from the invitation
again; I caught him and asked him whether he
wanted the biscuits. He shook his head and ran
away again. I suddenly realized that his “running
away” was a symbol of rejecting the invitation
and he might not know he can reject the others
in a more “appropriate” way by telling ‘no,
thank you’. So I taught him to say ‘no, thank
you’ when he decided to refuse the others
and when he did so, the others would not ask
him anymore. He could do it well with the little
reminder from volunteers.
Ben was punished by teachers as he
always spoke foul language. His classmates
definitely disliked him and were not willing
to play with him at school. When he came to
the group, he repeated the same behavior at
school and we noted it. We warned him not to
speak foul language anymore and explained
this behavior would make others unhappy and
hated him. He was like suffered from an electric
shock and suddenly realized these words were
foul language and people would dislike him.
However, he sometimes still let these foul words
slip from his mouth. Slowly, we discovered
that though he figured out those words were
forbidden in the group, he seemed to have no
words to replace or to express his thoughts.
Thereafter, we knew he was not a ‘bad’ boy.
Instead he had paid effort to make changes but
had encountered difficulty that he could hardly
tell and others could not easily discover. Ben
gradually learned to express himself without
the use of foul words and he was indeed a child
with obedience and high learning ability.
One day, Calvin went to toilet by himself
and he remembered all the things the tutor
taught him like to close the door before
undressing his trousers as well as flushing
after finished. When he wanted to go out, he
suddenly found out that the door could not be
opened. He was panic and began to cry and
scream. Tutors and volunteers in the corridor
heard the scream and ran to the toilet. They
pushed the door hardly and the door was
opened and Calvin came out with tears and
fear. Afterwards, Calvin always muttered that
he does not want to go to the toilet and was
afraid of being locked there. To reduce his
worry, one volunteer escorted him to the toilet
and waited outside the door. Yet, Calvin would
yell out not to close the door completely and he
17
wanted to leave a chink. However, a tutor put a
step forward. She not only escorted him to the
toilet, but also taught him to use the leg to pull
the door towards himself and then open the
lock when he encountered the same situation.
When he successfully opened the door with his
leg from inside, he went out with a smile and he
thereafter lively answered others that he did not
fear to go to toilet alone!
They are the children with autism that I met
when I volunteered in a social interaction group.
How lovable, genuine and obedient are they
though they are often easily misunderstood
as “impolite, stupid and odd”. Through the
interaction with the children, I witnessed
their talents and abilities and with some
assistance, they can learn, grow and overcome
challenge like most of us. After interacting with
these children, I wish to see lives with more
possibility and the society with more justice. I
would like people in sadness, difficulties or lost
to have more joyfulness, warmth and meaning
in their lives. Yet, that is not enough as this
cannot alter their well being totally; we have
to be with them, voice out the unjust and alter
the situation to become better for everyone.
Like helping the children with autism, instead
of dragging them with more training to fulfill the
society’s standard, I long for the scene that we
walk to them, facilitate them to grow and search
for their own direction of life. If we only see
the impossibility in them, I would like all of us
to think carefully what else we can change to
make the society and life we desired possible.
THE POWER OF APPRECIATION
21
Nowadays the society encourage people to
praise the children more, instead of punishing
us when we have done wrong. Therefore, most
of us have experienced the others’ appreciation.
Parents and teachers would praise us when I
have done well or work hard. It may seem to be
normal for us to receive praise and I think we
sometimes take it for granted. However, praise
and appreciation from others actually can be
very important for a person to understand his/
her own identity and self-image.
After my first placement, I find that being
appreciated was not usual for the parents or
clients. I was working in a speial needs preschool
centre. The parents have to pay extra
effort to take care of their children. This is a
finding from my first placement and it makes
me to think more about my past experiences as
well.
In my p l acement, I have o p e n e d a
parenting group for parents. Therefore, I share
some positive parenting skills with my group
members. One of the skills I have shared in
group is called “descriptive appreciation”.
It is to give appreciation to their children by
highlighting the good behaviours they have
done specifically, so that the children could
understand what is right and wrong to do
next time. Throughout my group process, I
do appreciate each of the group members’
effort paid to bring up their children with
special needs. It is because they need to learn
more about how to facilitate their children’s
development and learning; spend extra time
and energy to teach them. Most of them had
even given up their job. They may think it is their
responsibility. However, I think they deserve
others’ appreciation and support, which I do not
think is enough from my observation. Receiving
appreciation is not just a privilege for children.
Adults also need others’ recognition to do better
and have improvements. Therefore, I have
planned one session to invite each of them to
say one thing that they appreciate about the
other group members. Although they may feel
a little bit unease at the beginning as this is not
a popular culture of practice in Chinese society,
The atmosphere turned to be very touching.
Some of them were surprised and they did not
know they have been doing so well. They might
not have appreciated themselves as their family
members have never done so.
After the session, I do think that showing our
appreciation to the others is really important. We
should not just keep it in our heart. This is both
good to the sender and the receiver. If someone
knows how to appreciate and show gratitude to
the others, it is sure that he/she is positive toward
life.
As a social worker, we should not save
our appreciation to our clients when they have
done well. I think this is a very powerful tool
and they would find their own strengths to face
the difficulties that come across in life. They
would learn how to appreciate others as well.
Something seems to be minor, can be very
powerful. We can always do more for changes
by just taking one step further.
LET’S START
‘How much your clients can get depends
on your self-understanding’ This is what my
supervisor said at the first time when we met.
I always hear ‘self-understanding’ and ‘use of
self’ from social work lessons and sharings by
different social workers. However, I have never
experienced those before starting my placement
which is an important turning point of my social
work professional training. Through interacting
with my clients, I learnt how to understand
myself deeply.
Having the mission of helping the
disadvantaged in our society, social workers
get used to being tough when facing their
clients. As a result, I used to ignore my
feelings whenever I encountered setbacks and
emotional conflicts. However, all these emotions
would not disappear without proper release.
They would adversely affect the work that I
am doing with my clients, which hinders the
building of relationship between client and me.
Only when I am willing to face my emotions,
I am able to see my inner self clearly. This is
a golden chance for me to know more about
myself and enhance personal growth. When I
worked with battered women, I always felt lost
and confused. I didn’t know what I did would
be good or bad for them. Can the decision they
made be able be met with their expectation? At
the same time, I blamed myself for having such
feelings. It seems I am not the suitable person
to provide service to my clients. It is my field
supervisor who saved me from this trap. She
helped me a lot in searching myself. I realized
that my past unpleasant experience of handling
domestic violence had been affecting me from
past to present. Maybe I need to go back to my
unfinished business. In the process of reviewing
my past experience, I found that I took too many
responsibilities for others, which increased my
emotional burdens. On the other hand, I was
not willing to accept my emotions. I should learn
to shift the responsibility back to my clients as
they are the ones who make the decision and
they are mature enough to facing their future.
Placement is a start of my helping
profession and there are
lots of challenges
and learning
opportunities waiting
for me on the way of
becoming a social
worker.
TEARS
It was a winter when I met my first client. I
was a placement student.
I am not sure whether it was the cold
weather or the uncertain challenge I was going
to face, which made my hands trembled when
I accompanied my first client into the interview
room. She was a middle-aged lady, skinny and
paled face. She was stiff and had not returned
my smile as she kept glancing on the floor. She
did not even inspect the surroundings. As she
sat down, she immediately burst into tears.
I could not tell you how hard I tried to
pretend to be calm. As a worker, a student
worker who encountered with a Case for the
first time, all I could do was to quickly search in
my mind for any related, useful skills or theories
I have learnt in lesson that enabled me to
handle this unexpected emotional breakdown.
in my practical experience.
Things did not occur as what was expected.
A week later, I called the client for making an
upcoming appointment. She rejected me. Two
more weeks later, she suggested that we close
the case.
Why was that? Everything seemed going
fine during our last meeting, isn’t it?
“Last time when we met, crying in front of
an unfamiliar person for two whole hours made
me feel even worse. But I cannot control my
tears. Whenever I talked about myself, I cannot
stop crying. I feel sick about it. Miss, I know
you are kind but the way I kept crying made me
suffer,” on the other side of the phone, the client
started weeping.
25
For a second, a piece of memory came
into my mind. I remember once in a lesson,
the teacher told us when a client cried, we
do not usually hand in a piece of paper towel
immediately as it would stop him from ventilating
his unspeakable underlying emotion. And yet,
the expression of negative emotion is the need
of most clients who suffer from emotional pain.
Therefore, I decided to accept the client’s
emotion as a theoretical initiative by reflected to
her pain and suffer. This first interview session
was ended after the client’s enduring weeping
for two whole hours. For several days, I was
glad that I could practice what I learnt in lesson
Her words gave me a lesson. No skills and
theories would be a panacea for all kinds of
problems and situation. Sometimes I sought
opportunities to practice newly learnt therapies
or skills, yet, I forgot the very heart of social
work – empathetic understanding – to feel the
client’s feelings, being sensitive to the client’s
needs.
As a fresh social worker, I was aware that
lacking practical experience leads to a sense
of uncertainty during the encounter with a
client. As this sense of uncertainty grows, I
deliberately practice complicated therapies or
skills in order to ease the feeling of insecurity,
some of them were even too complicated for
me to well handle. Apparently, the way it works
serves the worker’s needs rather than putting
the client’s needs in the first place. When I look
back, I found that I overlooked the importance
of being presence during the interview, not
only physically but also emotionally presence.
Indeed, a caring, deeply human meeting
between the two souls during the therapy gives
rise to the greatest therapeutic function.
This is a significant experience in my
professional development. Since then, when I
face my service users, I would always remind
myself, “what are his needs”? Simple but true,
they always starts from where the client is.
LOVE IS SO CLOSE
First of all, I would like to present my
heartfelt thanks to the HSBC Social Work
Scholarship selection panel for picking me as a
recipient for the scholarship. This scholarship
is not only a recognition in the learning of social
work, it does help me to make one of my small
dreams to come true, which is to travel Eastern
Europe as my graduation trip. Sharing my small
dream here does not mean I want to show off
my how “luxury” my graduation trip is, on the
contrary, I would like to share how I confirms
the value of social work during the trip.
Social work is a study about “love”, “good
faith”, “understanding”, “inclusive” in people.
Definitely, it is a people-oriented discipline. In
the past three-year study, we are constantly
learning to love, to believe in people. Teacher
told us: people’s love, kindness and potential
ability are the nature of human beings
regardless of races and districts. In this journey,
I did truly feel it.
In different places, even if we have a
different skin color, speak different language,
eat different foods, but you will find the
goodness and love will not wear out because
of all the differences. When I got lost, the kind
locals stepped forward to tell me the way or
tried to help me ask the other locals (even we
tried our best to use body language as the
communication means).When I was struggling
with my heavy luggage and hurrying on train,
the brawny and uncles would give me a big
hand. When I was confused where I should
buy the ticket, a good bus driver to let me free
ride and a passenger gave me a ticket freely...
... all the love is so true and makes me feel
warm. Moreover, you would see that there were
parents who took good care of young children
during their trip, young grandsons tightly hug his
grandmother in the spots before the camera,
newlyweds kissed sweetly in front of the castle,
new meeting youngsters who from different
places chatted and understood each other in
pubs ... all scenes are filled with love! I suddenly
realized: a simple smile, a gentle greeting, a
kind help is able to let people taste the love of
the earth. Love can be very simple. Love can be
so close to us.
Sincerely, I did not have great confidence
in people at the beginning. However, after
the three-year social work study, I have been
gradually learning to appreciate love, to receive
love, to love, to have more confidence in
people. You will find that when people have
more love and faith, life can become happier.
In many cases, the power of love cannot be
estimated. As the one
who will set foot in the
social work profession,
I hope I can turn this
innocent human love
to each future client.
Meanwhile, we hope
that each client’s life can
become more beautiful
because of love and
change.
KALEIDOSCOPE
What is a “KALEIDOSCOPE”?
“A kaleidoscope is a circle of mirrors
containing loose, colored objects such as beads
or pebbles and bits of glass. As the viewer
looks into one end, light entering the other end
creates a colorful pattern, due to the reflection
of the mirrors.”
Kaleidoscope is quite representative
of how I envision my being and my heart. It
is consisted of fragmented, ever-changing
sum of colorful beads and reflecting mirrors.
Before the commencement of my social
work study, I am rather weak in organizing
my thoughts and feelings, just like having
messy beads at the end of the kaleidoscope
tube. However, if we recall our experience in
playing with a kaleidoscope, we can discern
the way to organize the messy colorful beads.
With proper speed and rotation angle, the beads
fall into places and form beautiful patterns.
Social work is just like the rotation speed and
angle, the lectures and placements gently help
me organize my thoughts and feelings.
My diverse characters are like the disorganized
beads in a kaleidoscope, but social work
facilitates my personal growth by giving me an
idea on how to be “congruent” – to walk the talk
( 知 行 合 一 ), and to be “genuine” to myself and
others, thus forming beautiful and symmetrical
patterns at the kaleidoscope tube.
Upon graduation, I sincerely hope to
dedicate myself into a career to work with
children in need. Kaleidoscope is just a simple
tube capped with mirrors to capture light for
illuminating the beads. Such a simple toy could
occupy kids for hours and years. I wish I could
provide hope, fun, and help to the children in
the social work career, and continue to form
beautiful patterns for myself and the children to
look at.
HEART
Person-centered concept is being
emphasized in social work professional.
However, if we are only full of theoretical
knowledge it is inadequate for us to have
effective intervention. Theoretical knowledge
is a strong backup for practical work. After a
year of theory learning, it was time to meet
the challenge from my first placement. It gave
me an opportunity to get in touch with people
with severe physical handicapped and mental
retardation. In addition, I have deeply realized
their needs, emotions and personal potential.
an obstacle anymore. With a the dedicated
heart, I believe we could do much more that
we expected. Big change starts with small
beginnings. That is an important spirit in social
work. At this moment, I would like to express
my sincerely thank to the HSBC Social Work
Scholarship. It is definitely a great recognition
and show of appreciation of being a recipient.
I was most impressed from the agency
social worker’s sharing, “they are just having
the intellectual defect, but are definitely capable
to use their “heart” to experience. As long as
you are willing to response wholeheartedly, you
could empathetic understand them much more.”
By using my “heart” to get in touch with
them, I sincerely realized that language is not
MY FIRST STEP INTO THE COUNSELING PROFESSION
I would like to show my greatest gratitude
to the genuine and continue support from
the Hongkong Bank Foundation. I am glad to
receive their enormous encouragement as
one of the recipients of the HSBC Social Work
Scholarship 2011-12.
Recalling my memory of the very first
case that I worked on in my first placement,
which is also the first case I handled in my
life, it was such a fruitful experience and
what made it so special is that it was a case
happened in Canada. The efforts of staff from
the Department of Social Work, the Chinese
University of Hong Kong and our excellent
placement partner enabled me to be a social
work placement student in Calgary Counselling
Centre in Alberta, Canada. Though I did not
have any experience in counseling and I
had to begin my learning using my second
language, the support from my supervisor Ms
Kim Busch and other colleagues made me felt
comfortable during the first session. I started
to build rapport with my client and applied the
counseling skills that I learned every time we
met in the counseling room. I realized that
being a counselor is in fact a job with loads
of responsibility but can be very powerful in
changing people’s lives.
me during the live session. Though six pairs of
eyes were watching, I was not really nervous as
I thought I would be because I knew that there
were six people that I trust who were supporting
me back there. Every time I picked up the cues
from them, I was refreshed and have more
insight in helping my clients. This marked a
beautiful end to my first social work placement
and I am now more confident in being a helping
profession.
I believe many of the important figures in
the social work and social welfare sectors in
Hong Kong were former recipients of the HSBC
Social Work Scholarship. I hope I can be one of
them in the future and join the force to promote
the social work values and improve the service
with our social work fellows.
37
Another big step for me is that I was
responsible for a live counselling session with
my reflecting team in the counselling centre.
I conducted my last session in a mirror room
and six of my teammates including a supervisor
were sitting in the observation room watching
(Calgary Counselling Centre)
Kim
HOPE
I am please and humble to receive the
HSBC social work scholarship 2011-12.
This is not only an honor, but also a
great encouragement to me as I continue my
study in social work. Many people had asked
me the question of why do I choose to be a
social worker. In fact, this is also a question I
constantly ask myself. The thought of being a
social worker is greatly inspired by my previous
working experience. I was working oversea at
a mental health service couple years ago. One
of my clients was a middle aged lady who had
been staying in a mental health hospital for
eight years. She left home when she had the
onset of her mental illness. She was unable
to recall anything about herself including her
home address, her family, even her name.
She was called by a nickname that was given
by others. After eight years of hospitalization,
she was finally discharged. She was referred
to our center for case management. The
immediately issue that I and my colleagues
needed to handle was to help to get her identity
back because it is essential for her to re-enter
the community. After trying different methods,
we were able to found her family. She found
her identity back and started a new life. This
incident had deeply impacted my vision of
career. Whenever I have doubt of being a social
worker, it reminded me that no matter how
small the effort one can offer, it can still have
profound impact on people’s lives. Apart from
this story, the interactions with other clients
also gave me new meaning of helping. Helping
is not only about helping others to overcome
disabilities and difficulties, but also to discover
their abilities and strengths.
Once again, thank you HSBC social
work scholarship program for the generosity
of financial support. In addition, I would like
to extend my deepest appreciation to the
scholarship committee who had confidence
in me and willingness to contribute my future
education. In the past two years, I have learned
knowledge and skills; I also learned the mission
of social work. I will continue to have a humble
and teachable heart to pursue the social work
career.
MY PASSION IN SOCIAL WORK
As a junior worker or a fresh student, I
was keenly interested in my personal journey
about how to keep up the passion as being a
social worker and how to deal with the difficult
situations of clients. Now that I have been in
frontline practice for more than 20 years. I
couldn’t deny but have to admit that I have gone
through different crisis in doubting, rethinking
and reflecting whether I still want to be a social
worker as my life-long career. At this moment, it
is still an open question to me.
I am always and still aware of my inner
voice that keep deeply in my heart about my
promise of staying in the field unless my interest
and sensitivity to my clients’ need went one day.
I graduated in 1989 and the commitment further
deepened after the June 4 incident. To me, this
is personally a life-long trauma but this also
helps me to confirm the meaning of standing
with the poor, the loss and the vulnerable in
society. In fact, being a counselor is not only
working on client’s intra-psychic or interpersonal
level but is also examining critically in the macro
social systems and their development that it
is depriving rights and social opportunities for
citizens to grow. Seeing people increasingly and
unequally suffer due to the turbulent changes in
the economy that brings social segregation and
injustice calling for more social consciousness,
this had motivated me to anew my practice
in the profession through further systematic
studies and reflection.
Social Work, as always debated as a
discipline of science or art, is personally to me
a human project in liberating human strength
under adversity. Life is a paradox that contains
both developmental and social challenges.
My clients are actually so big as giant to me,
though they are vulnerable and are contested
with everyday challenges in the social world,
they are authentic and courageously to express
their needs and problems that offer us platform
in understanding and creating new knowledge
and wisdom in human diverse conditions that
we practitioner have to learn humbly and going
hand-in-hand with them to fight for a better
world with better human values and civilization .
Lastly, I am grateful indebted by my
colleagues, mentors and academics in was
field that I have been supported and was not
lonely. Though I have to be mature enough
and professionally independent, at the same
time i am still being nurtured and inspired by all
their dedication, creativity and efforts to clients.
I always trusted them through these years,
though the feelings of inabilities, hopelessness,
alienation or burnout are occasionally
experienced. I am still confident to be myself
and be a professional social worker.
