peter nygårds, swedbank: Politicians and experts side by side According to Peter Nygårds, head of Swedbank's Community Contacts and Chairman of the recently concluded <strong>IVA</strong> project Energy Crossroads, knowledge makes it more difficult for us to dig ourselves into our own trenches. He also believes that the idea of allowing politicians to participate during the project was a great success and views <strong>IVA</strong>'s role as a bridge between science and politics. "in the future i would like to see politicians even more involved in ivA's projects," says Peter nygårds. "during Energy Crossroads it was evident that the politicians themselves wanted to be involved earlier on and also have a more central role in the project. in future projects ivA should consider having the politicians work side by side with researchers and industry representatives, instead of working within a separate panel like this time." Peter nygårds believes that when people with different roles meet and challenge each other there is a productive dynamic. "Particularly if you create a new dynamic by, for example, having politicians sit down together and discuss the facts, instead of only doing this within their own factions. during the Energy Crossroads project all of those involved were able to feed off each other and increase their understanding of the facts as well as other people's standpoints." naturally, the political work is mainly done within parties and factions, but here too it is possible to create new opportunities by increasing knowledge and understanding. Peter nygårds believes that Energy Crossroads and the joint discussions made possible by the project made it easier to arrive at the energy agreement that the alliance reached during the course of the project. "of course, i'm not saying that the project created the agreement, but because ivA provided a new arena for bipartisan debate, the politicians gained a new perspective. At the same time the parties increased their knowledge of the issues thanks to Energy Crossroads. These things combined may have made it easier for the parties to find a reasonable solution." After the conclusion of Energy Crossroads the task of providing information to the political sphere continued through information and discussion meetings attended by project representatives and the different parties. Energy Crossroads strongly emphasised the principle that energy efficiency is fundamental in achieving a better energy balance. Peter nygårds believes that improving efficiency can make a big difference if it is done with a more positive and enthusiastic attitude. "new technology needs to be interesting and exciting. i don't believe in using the whip as a means of getting people to use energy more efficiently. more measurement, technology that is exciting from a design perspective, and more personal control over energy consumption may do a lot more good." Peter nygårds has been involved in energy issues for many years and has worked with them professionally for much of his working life. But he points out that he is not an engineer; his approach to energy issues has always related to how they affect society and people. he served as state secretary at the ministry of enterprise and energy from 1994 to 1997, after which he served as managing director of skB, swedish nuclear fuel and Waste 12 management company. Today he is head of swedbank's community contacts and is often approached to serve as a project manager or to conduct studies. in order to find good solutions to energy issues as well as other important societal issues, Peter nygårds has expressed a number of expectations of various players in society: • Scientists should not be tactical and blinded by their own science. • Politicians should not lock themselves into party political considerations, but broaden their minds. • Schools must address what has been missing – the link between school and working life. "We need to take responsibility for how and what our children and young people learn about society. Today they are bombarded with facts, both in school and through modern media, but their knowledge is often very fragmented." Peter nygårds sees ivA's role as a bridge between science and politics, and believes that ivA has raised its profile in recent years. "ivA has strengthened its role as a distributor of knowledge and creator of contacts between different parties in society. ivA is one of 'the good guys' who believe in knowledge as the foundation for societal development. This makes it even more important for the organisation to develop its working methods wisely. »We need to take responsibility for how and what our children and young people learn about society.
