No vaccine manufacturing in Sweden
numerous projects are currently in progress, in sweden
as well as in many other countries, to find new vaccines for
diseases such as malaria and cholera. one problem is keeping production
costs down. ivA's division x, Biotechnology, held a meeting on 3 february
to look at the vaccine manufacturing situation. one of the problems for swedish research that
was highlighted was that there will soon be no vaccine production activity in sweden. The only remaining
manufacturer is about to move to switzerland.
Growing metropolitan areas
At a seminar in
gothenburg in
April development
in the malmö
and gothenburg
metropolitan areas
were compared.
malmö has grown
more rapidly and
is now bigger than
the gothenburg area. malmö is also far ahead
in certain infrastructure areas. gothenburg
has, however, worked hard in recently years
to find a common vision and platform. The
goal is to have several attractive regional
centres around a strong nucleus.
Biochips are a tool to fight cancer
Through newly
developed technology
that uses a
combination of
antibodies and biochips,
it is possible
to diagnose complex
diseases, for
example to identify
the exact type of
a tumour. This technology was presented
at the Assembly of the Academy on 19
march. on the same occasion, the winners
of this year's Akzo nobel science Award,
carl Borrebaeck and Thomas laurell, were
congratulated (see separate article, p. 45).
IVA lowered the pound
mervyn king, governor of the Bank of england,
visited ivA's division ix, economics, in
september to talk about the financial crisis.
But when mr. king also wanted to meet
some of his contacts at the Riksbank, sweden's
central bank, there was a problem.
The media found out about the visit and
it became a topic of conversation in the
financial markets. The swedish Riksbank had
namely just shocked the world by introducing
a negative interest rate. Was mervyn
king thinking of doing something similar
at the Bank of england? The rumour mill
contributed to the pound's further decline
at the end of september.
A Swedish ESS
Preparations for
the interdisciplinary
research centre
ess, european
spallation source,
are now in full
swing and are
centered around
lund university. At
a meeting arranged
by ivA's industrial Research committee
(iRc) on 26 november, the project was
described and discussed from a political,
technical and scientific perspective. one
issue raised was how swedish industry can
benefit from ess.
