Welcome Message FISITA President, Dr. Akihiko Saito This year we are celebrating the 60 th anniversary of FISITA - 60 years of a congress that has become one of the most important dates in the international auto calendar. Throughout that time, we in the auto industry have been no strangers to pressure. Pressure from customers, pressure from competitors and increasingly pressure from policy-makers. But few would disagree that it is now more intense than ever before. Last year more than 70 million vehicles were manufactured worldwide. Global demand for personal mobility continues to grow in the developing markets, hand-in-hand with heightened public concern about the effects of CO 2 emissions on climate change. Then there are the associated challenges we face in areas like safety and traffic congestion. The world, as always, turns to engineers to square this circle. Our theme for this congress the Future of Automobiles and Mobility is more than just words. We really are fighting to secure a sustainable future for our industry and for the planet. As we prepare for this Congress, we are all wrestling with the question of how to meet tough new emissions targets in the US, European Community and in Asia. Many of the alternative powertrain and fuel technologies, which we hope to use in order to reach these targets, are incredibly complex and take us right to the limits of current engineering knowledge. At times, the demands placed on us as automotive engineers can seem almost impossible. But take a moment to consider what we have already achieved. Exhaust emissions have been cut by an average of 85% since 1990. Today’s passenger cars have achieved a double-digit reduction in CO 2 emissions since 1995, despite the impact of safety regulations on vehicle weight and the increasing consumer preference for larger vehicles. And talking of safety, road traffic fatalities have decreased by 30% in the last 25 years, despite vast increases in the number of vehicles on the world’s roads during that time. These are great achievements of which we automotive engineers can be proud. They also give us confidence in solving the tough technical challenges we face today. The automotive industry leads the world in R&D investment, spending around EUR 85 billion globally. If we were a country, we would be the world’s 6 th largest economy. No other industry does more to address the environmental impact of its products and as automotive engineers we can claim to be working at the cutting edge in countless technologies which will benefit society as a whole. In 1948 FISITA was founded under the motto “Progressons en Commun - Together we Progress”. 60 years later FISITA and the automobile have both progressed beyond recognition but the motto still holds true. Our Federation, which began with five founding members, now unites the engineering societies in 38 countries who share the belief that we can secure our future through innovation and collaboration. We can find the answers needed to make personal mobility even cleaner, safer and more affordable for everyone. But only if we work together. This September we will assemble the best minds in the industry to exchange ideas, share knowledge and push the boundaries of automotive technology - just as we did in 1948. With this, our 32 nd congress, we offer you the chance to be inspired by some truly exceptional technical presentations and to gain an expanded perspective on the new technologies which are driving our industry. Just as importantly, we give you the opportunity to build relationships with the customers, suppliers and expert technology partners who can help you and your company to flourish in this demanding climate. I firmly believe that this Congress will be a major step towards our shared goal of sustainable development, contributing to the happiness and prosperity of us all. I hope that you will find plenty to interest you in this programme and I look forward to meeting you in Munich in September.
