Volunteer of the Month
May sees the first award for Bexley’s new initiative.
This year, to reward the phenomenal efforts of so many of our volunteers, the Club has introduced a Volunteer of
the Month Award.
We are delighted to award this for the first month to Paul Pinnock, who although rarely seen at the Club during the
weekends now his twin sons, Alex and Chris, no longer play at the Club, puts in hours of work during the week on
projects all around the ground. A dab hand at most DIY, after starting the new benches in the home dressing room
Cricket Force weekend, Paul took them home to complete a task which took over 50 hours. Paul receives £50 of bar
vouchers at the Club as a Thank You for all his efforts. The next recipient will be selected by the General
Committee in June.
Paul puts down his
paintbrush to work on
the new benches in the
changing rooms. No
more splinters for the
players!
Player of the Month will be announced next week.
Another Great Saturday
For the second successive Saturday, all 5 men’s teams continue a winning streak
Men’s Matches
1 st XI
Saturday the 18 th May the 1 st XI visited Beckenham CC, hoping to improve on last week’s good but not decisive
victory against Sevenoaks Vine. After a thorough warm up and preparation period, the skipper, George Wells, went
to do the toss with all intentions of having a bat, on what looked a very good wicket. The toss was lost and we were
bowling, hoping to continue the good work from the seam attack in previous weeks.
Jason Benn began in great form, causing problems and finding the edge a number of times but however was
unfortunate not too pick up the early wicket he deserved. Adam Riley joined the attack and picked up a regulation
caught and bowled, deceiving the batsmen in the flight. Jason Benn continued his excellent spell, pinning the
opening batsmen on the finger who then had to retire hurt, a mental victory for the Bexley boys. By this stage, Alex
Blake was well set and began displaying his wide array of shots, particularly against the spin bowlers. Blake was
the only Beckenham batsmen who managed to score at a steady rate throughout the innings, the other batsmen
struggled for boundaries as the bowlers continued to bowl well, accompanied by good field settings. Harry Furze
bowled a good spell of bowling and despite not picking up a wicket; he did a solid job controlling the scoring rate in
the middle overs. Min Patel showed his class, picking up two wickets, along with Maruf Chowdhury whose wickets
prevented Beckenham from scoring 300+ runs. Finally Blake departed, skying an attempted Yorker from Benny,
and was caught in the deep by Adam Riley. Beckenham finished on 251, a chase-able total on a batsman friendly
wicket.
Jimmy and Jack went out to bat, knowing that they would need to set a solid platform if Bexley were to complete a
convincing run chase, and that is exactly what they did, making a 100+ run opening partnership, until Jack Wells
unfortunately departed after middling it straight to mid-off after an excellent innings of 47 displaying textbook
quality throughout. Jimmy and George Wells continued the good work, both scoring at nearly a run-a-ball, with
Jimmy drilling the ball for six on a number of occasions. Bexley never looked in danger, always ahead of the rate
due to the steady flow of boundaries. Jimmy reached his 100 in excellent fashion and showed why he will be such a
bonus for Bexley this season, with George Wells creeping up behind him as well, finishing on 66. Young Harry
Furze came to the crease with the scores tied and left it to the still in batsman, Jimmy to finish it off. An excellent
victory for Bexley and let’s hope we can continue our winning ways against the Hartley Badgers this Saturday.
Henry Pickering
The 1 st XI are currently sitting in 2 nd place, 4 points behind Hartley.
Jimmy scores his first League 100 for the Club
2 nd XI
Once more, these two sides completed a drawn match, by far the most common outcome from the past eight
seasons.
Saturday saw the return of the 2 nd XI to Manor Way for the first home game of the season, against a dogged
Tunbridge Wells. On a slightly overcast afternoon and slightly green deck, Tunbridge Wells won the toss and
decided to bowl.
With a strong batting line up, Steve Rudduck at 8, we were confident we had the firepower to post a commanding
score. Despite the wicket offering a bit to the seamers early on, a solid opening partnership of 84 between Dan
Haley and Sandeep Bains set a solid foundation. Sadly Sandeep ran Dan out when he was starting to look seriously
dangerous. With Jack Bell at the crease, who scored a lovely 38 for his first game back for Bexley, a big score was
on the cards. Unfortunately, Sandeep didn’t push on for that big hundred, and departed for 60 just as he looked like
he was going to put us into a position to declare. We continued to bat positively, a run a ball 41 from Murtaza
Abbas, enabled us to post a commanding 241-7 from our 50 overs.
We went out to field confident we could claim the 10 wickets we needed for the big 20 points, but sadly things
didn’t quite go to plan. With Jordan, Fraser and Arpit (who had to go off injured after 2 overs) opening up, the ball
was swinging about. After 5 overs, Tunbridge Wells were 10 for no loss, without scoring a run off the bat! Sadly
we were unable to make a significant breakthrough early on and at drinks we realised we could have a game on our
hands with the score at 95-1 – at the same stage we were 110-1. A change was needed and a eureka moment from
the captain. Turning to off/leg spin of Aiden Griggs, he claimed 3 wickets in 4 overs, with two great catches by
Dave Dixon (substitute fielder) turning the match back in our favour. At the other end, Jas Bassan managed to
snare a couple of key wickets himself, resulting in Tunbridge Wells collapsing to 118-6 with 14 overs left to bat.
Sadly this produced the typical ‘blocking out for the draw’ and despite all our best efforts their innings fizzled out
to 175-7.
Overall an excellent performance from a young side and great signs for the season ahead.
3 rd XI
Playing at Horton Kirby’s ground Captain for the day, Nick Stroudley, won the toss and put Horton Kirby into bat.
The bowlers toiled to restrict HK to 195 for 8 in 46 overs, with Jolyon Bond taking 4 – 54 off 10 overs.
In a nail biting finish, Pete Mitchell finished on 90 not out to reach the total of 196 in 45.5 overs, supported by
Hadleigh Luff (30), Matthew Bennison (28), Martin Mask (26) and Ben Moore (8*). With one ball left, Nick was
a quivering wreck but very pleased with the win.
This leaves the 3 rd XI just 8 points behind the league leaders, with a game in hand.
4 th XI
With a couple of drop outs on Friday and the 4s being a predominantly development side, I was looking to call up a
young, aggressive batsman and live wire in the field. No member fitted the bill more so than Nick Riley, the man
who took the greatest catch ever seen at Manor Way and now the man to take the greatest catch seen at Dartford
Grammar. When Catford Wanderers eventually arrived they won the toss and decided to bowl first, on what is
usually a lively wicket. When they took to the field, they realised their captain hadn’t actually arrived so they
didn’t have a ball, which we then provided. Nick was first out LBW for 2 with the umpire putting up his finger up
about the same time the appeal started. That brought together Jack Clay and Michael Maietta who both batted with
controlled aggression and saw us through to drinks before Michael was caught on the boundary for a well played
48. Jack got to 50 before being given LBW by Coursey, who waited slightly longer than his Catford counterpart to
put up his finger. We then lost a couple of quick wickets which looked to have pegged us back to a score of around
170 rather than the 200 we were looking for. However some powerful hitting from Stuart Ladbrook (47),wristy
flicks from myself (34*) mixed with some calamitous running, we managed to get to a well above par score of 209-
7 from our 50.
Catford Wanderers appeared to have picked their batting order out of the hat and good opening spells from Ryan
Saunders (6 Overs 1 for 10) and George Bland (7.5 overs 3 for 20) meant that they never really looked like chasing
down the score. Special mention to Nick Riley who took a great catch at first slip, I didn’t have my tape measure
with me but I would say his feet were a good 5ft off the floor as he snatched the ball out of the air with one hand.
Fred Woodgate chipped in with the key wicket of their only batsman with some kind of technique and Will Smith
took 2 as well. Drinks were then brought out by their captain who had only just turned up, just 75 overs into the
match, and I decided to bring myself on to burgle a couple of wickets at the end. However their number 7 (27*)
and 10 (24) didn’t know the script and started to swing for everything and after being hit over mid-wicket once too
often I took myself off and brought Blandy back on to finish the job. Catford Wanderers 132 all out and a
comfortable 20 points for us.
George Newell
This win sees the 4 th XI in second place, 9 points behind the current leaders, Rainham.
Nick showing Adam isn’t the only Riley that can spring Jack Clay on his way to 50
into action for the Club. No photo of his gazelle catch
but if you speak to him, he will describe it for you – in great detail!!
5 th XI
Victory Short and Sweet!
While the 4ths were entertaining their 2 nd XI the 5ths took on Catford Wanderers 3rds at Avery Hill Park, Eltham.
Not knowing quite what to expect we met the nine men of Catford and wandered out to the middle after getting
changed but not being allowed to leave our clothes in the changing rooms!! Most bizarre. Surprisingly the track
looked very playable, cut and rolled. Winning the toss Griggsy put them into bat. A little bit of life in the track
saw the ball going through very nicely. Tabish Nadeem made the early breakthrough with a good catch taken by
Ian Shanks. The CW’s captain seemed like he wanted to get on with it swinging the bat but was soon undone by
Griggsy removing his middle stump. Tabish stuck to the task and cleaned up their number three. Another
demolition of the stumps by Griggsy found CW’s 4 down for not many. Mike Shelvey was on the money from ball
one and was rewarded with a very well held caught and bowled followed by a deceptive ball crashing into the
stumps. Mike Dixon bowled tightly again and with young U13 Shaun Evans weaving his magical spin, they
picked up one wicket each and with 67 on the board the Catford innings closed. Their other two players failed to
show despite their captain’s assurances. A special mention for Dave Dixon, who caught a superb one handed catch
at square leg which has earned him the nickname “Twizzle”. He went on to sub field for the 2 nd XI at Manor Way
and caught two more excellent catches that evening.
In reply Bexley made quick work of the required total following a quick turn-around (as tea was no- where near
ready). Monopolising the batting, Paul James and Harvi Bassan (20 not out) took it home. Paul with a tidy 43 not
out and Harvi pushing some very quick singles made sure of the Bexley victory, despite losing Gary Carter chasing
a wide one down leg side and gloving to the keeper. Bob Ford waited patiently padded up at number 4 but on his
debut failed to get in. Unfortunately, with no match this Saturday, Bob will have to wait again to show his batting
technique, learnt from watching brother-in-law, Sandeep Bains.
Another 20 points and up amongst the League leaders who have played one game more.
Steve Griggs
Harvi Bassan hits the winning run, with Paul James
The 3 rd and 4 th XI are looking for regular scorers.
Anyone interested please speak to any captain or Lesley.
Colt’s Matches
U16
The U16’s played Bromley Common on a cold and grey Friday. Losing the toss, Bexley took to the field and
mixing the bowling around, Bexley restricted Bromley Common to 109 for 9 wickets off 20 overs. Anish and
Aiden each took 2 wickets. Batting second in the gloom was never going to be easy, even for young eyes but no
one built an innings and running between the wickets was often lethargic, with Bexley finishing on 100 for 8
wickets in 20 overs. It seemed that revision, GCSE’s, lack of matches and the cold had drained the lads of their
normal enthusiasm, drive and energy but giving Bromley Common 22 extras didn’t help. Haribo sweets are ready
for their next match!!
U15A
Hosting Hayes at Manor Way, Bexley elected to bat first, scoring 115 for 3 wickets in 24 overs. Daniel Hall top
score with 38*. In reply Hayes could only reach 101 for 5 in 24 overs. Fred Woodgate took 2-3 runs off 4 overs.
U15B
U13A
Bexley hosted Hayes for an ECB Cup match and elected to bat first, reaching 109 for 8 wickets off 20 overs.
Captain Alex Shanks scored 30* and the lower order pushed the score along with some excellent running between
the wickets. The Bexley bowling attack ripped through the Hayes batting order, reducing them to all out for 29 in
13.1 overs. Matt Dawson 3-7 off 4, Harry Golding 3-15 off 4 and Nathan Zeqiri 3-4 off 2.1 overs.
Tuesday saw them play Hayes again, in a League match and batting first the U13’s made 114 for 4 wickets off 20
overs with a more positive batting approach. Archie Hobbs-Moore retired on 26, Sam Barton 15* and Jack
O’Hare 14*. Despite some good fielding, leading to 3 run outs from Dominic Fisher (2) and Shaun Evans,
Hayes were always ahead on the run rate and reached the total in 19.3 overs for 6 wickets. Jack O’Hare took 2-6
off 2.3 overs. Unfortunately 24 extras given by Bexley was probably the difference in this match.
U13B
Put into bat by OD Cuaco, Bexley reached 102 for 2 from 20 overs, with Brendan Carter retiring on 25 and
Harrie Jensen 17*. Some very economical bowling saw OD restricted to 59 for 8 in 20 overs. Bruno Di Castri
took 3-8 off 2 and Matthew Garner took 2-5 off 2 overs
U11A
Batting first against Sidcup, Bexley struggled to reach 66 all out in 13.2 overs, with only Joshua Curtis reaching
double figures (15). The Bexley Boys did not however make it easy for Sidcup to reach their total of 84 for 9
wickets in 24 overs. Joseph Harris 2-2 off 3 overs and Samuel Wakeman 2-9 off 3 overs.
U11B
On Thursday 16th May the U11B's entertained their Blackheath counterparts. A mixture of good bowling from
our opposition and nervous inhibition from the Bexley batting saw us amass a score of 59-4 (Jaskaran Singh top
score with 9*). It was always going to be difficult to defend but the boys made a decent if unsuccessful fist of
doing so by taking Blackheath to the 17th over (60-5). Oscar Hart, Callum Deppe, Marcus Ritson and Seb
Naylor were the pick of the bowlers, each enjoying duplicate figures of 1-4 off 2 overs
Tuesday 21st May saw the Team travel to Foxbury for a match against
Old Elthamians. Old E's elected to bat and Bexley succeeded in
restricting them to 82-5 (Ben Bleksley 2-4). A much more assertive
batting performance than that demonstrated previously from Bexley,
saw us knocking the runs off for a loss of just two wickets. All the top
six contributed in a meaningful manner but Oscar Hart had the
honour of being top scorer with 15*.
Currently second in the League behind Blackheath but, with a bowling
attack that has picked up 20 wickets in their three matches, the
Bexley Boys remain confident that they will push the current leaders
all the way.

U15s
Bexley U15s v St.Lawrence and Highland Court U15s (Kent League)
Two experienced teams locked horns at Bexley CC on Wednesday 15th May. Both teams had plenty of county
experience amongst their ranks. Bexley fielded one player short in this 8-a-side fixture. Batting first the visitors
looked impressive with 3 batters retiring but the Bexley team bowled and fielded well. In reaching 128 for 4 they
looked to have done enough. In reply however, Bexley made steady progress but eventually fell 22 runs short with
both teams batting out their full allocation of 20 overs. Bexley recorded 106 for 6. Rochelle Beeson making her
debut half century and Poppy Payne ended up with 3 wickets. Triveni Lall took a wicket and batted sensibly and
her sister, Arunima, playing in her first under 15s match, bowled well. Katie Moran was playing in her first ever
hardball league match and is settling in nicely and bowled well. Florence Hyde had a solid all round game. Emily
Thompson captained the side from behind the stumps moved the field around sensibly when required. This was a
good match to watch, well done to both teams. Thanks to the mums for sorting out the drinks and to Steve Hyde
for helping to clear away at the end of the match.
U13s
Sidcup U13s v Bexley U13s (North Kent Junior League)
16 th May 2013
Matches between Sidcup and Bexley are always keenly fought and sportingly contested affairs and this proved to
be no exception, both teams fielded players with plenty of experience but also gave several less experienced
players an opportunity to play and all the less experienced players from both teams performed extremely well.
Batting first, the Bexley opening pair of Arunima Lall and Anna Breare put on an opening partnership of 56 in
around 10 overs and the only two other batters used both recorded not out scores. Reaching 96 for 2 in their full
allocation of 16 overs was a good run a ball effort. In reply Bexley opened their bowling with relatively novice
bowlers but Megan Jenkins, Kitty Weekes and Lily Adams (in her first ever hardball match) returned good
bowling figures. Sidcup were gradually getting behind the run rate but some great running between the wickets by
skipper Izzy Regan (23 not out) kept her batting partners on their toes and kept the runs flowing. However, the
more experienced Bexley bowlers contained the batting and Sidcup eventually recorded 69-6 but did well to bat
out their full allocation of 16 overs. Both teams scored similar totals off the bat and the deciding statistic in the
final analysis was the extras totals. Caitlin Fox had a great match; her personal best of 16 not out together with a
wicket, a catch and a run-out was a notable achievement
