Joint bid for Mill Meadows land proves
unsuccessful
Sadly at the end of Cricket Week, the Club was
informed that we had not been successful with the
joint bids that Bexley Cricket Club had made with
Burnt Ash (Bexley) Hockey Club and David Haley
to acquire the plots of land being sold at Mill Meadows
. All parties had worked tremendously hard to
put together an attractive and strong bid, and the
thanks of Bexley CC go out to our partners who had
enabled us all to put in a bid in for the full 11+ acres.
To be able to achieve this bid was a tremendous effort
from the membership of both clubs, to be able to
raise so much money through donations, pledges and
fundraising contributions, was a fantastic effort and
I would like to thank all members for their generosity.
The enthusiasm shown by all members as well,
also shows how much we all care for Bexley Cricket
Club and how much of an impact having a second
ground at Manor Way would make.
Currently we are unaware who the successful party
has been and it may still be some weeks before the
sale is completed and we are able to ascertain that
information, however all of those who have been
involved in this project are determined that we will
continue to pursue options to acquire land to develop
a second pitch and will explore other possibilities
once more is known on the new owners of the land.
Cricket Week - Entertainment
Despite the weather putting paid to most of the
matches during Cricket Week, the week was still
successful with strong support throughout the week
for the Entertainment provided in the evenings, and
many members still frequenting the club for lunch
and afternoon drinks even though there was little
to watch on the field of play. Things got underway
on Monday evening with Talent Night, and 6 acts
took part covering an eclectic range of music from
Queen to the Beastie Boys, Shaggy and One Direction,
the judges eventually named Morgan Joyce as
the winner for his performance of ‘Don’t Stop Me
Now’, the first time anyone can ever remember a
silent Joyce at the Club. On Wednesday despite the
game being abandoned without a ball being bowled,
the Dartfordians’ boys stayed all day and it paid off
as they walked away from the annual Darts competition
4-1 winners, a rematch and chance for revenge
is promised for later in August as Dartfordians start
their own cricket week. Also during the day Dennis
Simons threw a celebratory lunch to a) mark his 80th
birthday from a few weeks before and b) to celebrate
his retirement as Fixture Secretary (maybe!), the
celebration also happened to coincide with former
President David Kelsey’s 80th birthday. On Thurs-
Wednesday of Cricket week, Dennis Simons and
David Kelsey celebrating their 80th birthdays
Bexley’s Got Talent: All of the acts from Monday
night gather on stage waiting to hear who
will be declared the 2012 winner. With Morgan
Joyce taking the honours
day, the Cricket Week Quiz continued to attract huge
support as 118 participants pitted their wits against
each other, the Old Boys of University of Kent who
had provided that day’s opposition showed that they
hadn’t just been at Uni for the drinking though,
as they were crowned 2012 champions. Thanks to
Danielle for all of her efforts in running the quiz this
year.
On Saturday the Marquee was ‘tarted up’ and the
Black Tie Fundraising Dinner took place. Despite
the disappointing news regarding the unsuccessful
bid for Mill Meadows, the evening was a huge
success raising nearly £4,500 and everyone partying
in high spirits throughout the night, with a likely
few sore heads come Sunday morning. A special
thanks to John and Julie Burford, Min Patel, Richard
O’Sullivan, Willostix, Jack Bell and Lisa Maynard
who very kindly donated auction items, also to all of
those who donated raffle prizes including sponsors
of the club Happy China and Village Wines.
Cricket Summary
Play was limited throughout the week, with only
the equivalent of 2 full days being managed in the
end, the wettest Cricket Week certainly in the last 50
years was the view of those that can remember that
far back. On Monday, against the Peter Wellard XI,
the start was delayed from the scheduled 11:30 until
15:30 which allowed many old friends to catch up
over a drink or two during a long lunch. Once play
got under way Anish Patel nearly caused the game to
end very quickly taking 4 quick wickets as the once
a year players struggled on a wet one, but Graham
Ball showed he hadn’t lost it and compiled a chanceless
50, in guiding his team to 195. In response
against some at times friendly bowling, Bexley
knocked off the runs with George Wells scoring 50
and as is now becoming Cricket Week tradition,
Nick Stroudley scoring an undefeated 60.
On Tuesday against the MCC, only one innings was
possible with the MCC registering 210 before the
third heavy shower of the day curtailed play. Anish
Patel was once against the pick of the bowlers picking
up 3 wickets, and our favourite Italian bowler,
Lois De Gigilo who popped by for a few days, was
unlucky to only pick up only one wicket with two
catches going down off his bowling.
washed out and on Thursday once again only one innings
of play was possible, with Bexley batting first
against The University of Kent Old Boys featuring
three Bexley old boys. Despite a strong Bexley batting
line up, the top order struggled with only Stuart
Ladbrook digging in on a slow pitch, and Stuart
ended up with a fifty in just his second week back in
the UK after returning from Dubai. A score of 130
looked on the cards until Charlie Guenigault 37* and
Chris Woolley 25 flayed some tired bowling from
former Bexley players John Taylor and Matt Cheesbrough
and got the Bexley score up to 165. Sadly
no sooner was tea taken than the rain started and the
game ended. On Friday once again the entire match
was washed out against the Neil Clinton XI.
Let’s hope for better luck and much better weather
next Summer for Cricket Week.
On Saturday all the matches were washed out once
Aero Development League Hartley v Bexley
A break in the rain meant that the Sunday Development
team were able to go over to Hartley and
finally get a game of cricket in. With the absence of
Jason, Dan Haley won the toss and elected to bowl
first on a greenish wicket, this proved to be the right
decision as wickets fell at regular intervals with all
bowlers making the most of the conditions, in particular
Harry Furze who returned excellent figures 5-23
off his 8 overs and we bowled them out 124. After
a short tea break, which was watched over by past
friends, a little closer than expected, it was our turn
to take to the crease, a task which we made seem a
lot easier. We managed to chase down the required
total in 30 overs, for the loss of just 3 wickets in 30
overs, Laingy top scoring with 53 and new recruit
Rob Semi chipping in with 22. The win leaves us 3rd
in the league with a game in hand over Blackheath
who are top, a win in this would see us go to the top
of the table.
U16’s V Old Elthamians
The U16’s closed in on the league title with a comprehensive
win over league leaders Old Elthamians
at the Foxgrove on Friday 6th July. Angus won the
toss and inserted the opposition on a green and damp
pitch and Harry Furze (4 3 2 1) and Harry Chapman
(4 1 5 0) wasted no time in taking a stranglehold of
the game. The tight bowling continued with Angus
(3 1 5 1) and Will Smith (3 1 6 1) with wicket a
piece taken by Daniel Golding, Velsen Devarajulu
and Ajay Bungar. Most noticeable was the fielding
was back to its highest standards with two stunning
catches by Ajay, a run out and catch on debut for
Rob Sehmi and run out to Jordan Fisher. Old Elthamians
finished their 24 overs with 63 for 8.
In reply the opposition found George Haley in fine
form top scoring with 28 off 37 balls with Harry
Furze 22 (39) and Augus Dalgleish 7 (19) taking the
boys over the winning line in just 13.5 overs.
Their final match is this Friday when three points
should secure the title .
Friday 20th July Kent U15’s
Champion’s Bexley take on
Middlesex U15’s Champions
Ealing at the
Bexley Cricket Club from
5.30pm - Bar open from 5pm.
Last week Harry Furze had the chance to test his
bowling skills against some of the South African test
cricketers as the Kent Under 17s provided net bowlers
for South Africa during their recent 3 day game
against Kent. Harry claims that he can now call JP
Duminy and Dale Steyn as his bunnies, but was not
quite so successful against AB De Villiers.
A huge thank you to all the bar, catering
and extra ground staff that made the week
possible.
