2 nd XI
Saturday saw the final home game of the season, against local rivals Dartford. With the pitch looking like a
spinner’s paradise, we were planning on batting first...sadly we lost the toss and were asked to bowl.
After 4 overs it didn't look too good, they had got off to a flyer and were on 20-0. However by drinks the tables had
truly turned, with the score now 50-2 of 25 overs. This was in no part helped by some excellent bowling from
Stanley Wells, who eventually finished with an opening spell of 15 overs (on the bounce), 4 maidens, 2 for 30. At
the other end Lush was economical and Min tied up an end to finish his full complement of overs with 4-34.
Behind the stumps, George Addington on his first appearance for the second team, would put in a stellar
performance, coming away with a catch and a stumping. All in all we were required to chase 155. Could easily
have been a few less but Murts bowled 3 overs for 27, no doubt hoping he would be able to add a few more runs his
season’s tally.
Like Dartford, we got off to a flyer, 27-0 off 3 overs was pretty ideal. Our innings went off without a hitch. The
ever dependable Gary Myers racking up 70, annoyingly caught when we needed 2 to win and supported admirably
along the way by myself, Murts and Angus.
All in all a great way to finish the home season at Manor Way.
3rd XI
3 rd XI v Hawkinge CC 31 st August 2013
For the 2 nd week on the trot we travelled to the coast in search of points to take us within reach of a promotion slot.
Those of us who had played in the game at DGS, we were wary of the carnage that had been handed out to our
bowlers that day by their overseas player who got 99 off about 40 balls coming in at number 6.
We arrived at a sunny Hawkinge ground to be presented with what appeared to be a belter of a wicket, a pleasant
ground and a funny agricultural smell! Hoping to put our authority on the game immediately, 30 year old captain
Strouds, recovering from his birthday bash the night before, duly lost the toss but must have had the surprise off his
life when Hawkinge asked us to bat first. Whilst struggling to change in one of the worst designed changing rooms
in the world (complete with cash till, pots & pans and no room to swing the proverbial cat.) we duly accepted the
task with glee and a big sense of relief and sent Peggy & Ladders out to open.
Peggy got off the mark for the first time in 3 weeks with a streaky 4 through the slips and Ladders looked as though
he could get out any minute. His new pads taking a bashing every other ball. However they survived the opening
few overs and despite some interesting one fingered bowling by one of the opening bowlers and some raucous
appealing by the home side, managed to see out a few overs. However, it was not to last. Peggy got cleaned up for
5. Then Ladders was out to a good catch at 2 nd slip for a quick-fire 28 with 6 fours. This left Matthew ”Teapot”
Bennison and captain Strouds to get after the bowling. This was a superb innings by Strouds. Batting with a
hangover, clearly August was his month and the Bexley innings focused around his 95. Some superb cut shots a la
Ian Bell with a stout defence and positive attacking shots. Useful additions from Teapot, Bomber, Deano (But it’s
not all about me!!!) and a little cameo from Luke McCawley with 29 got us to a very useful total of 241 for 7 after
our 46 overs. Regular explosions were heard from the nearby army range for the rest of the day. Maybe they were
practising blowing up Dartford Grammar outfield and Bexley Park’s wicket to improve them over the winter!!!!
At tea we were hopeful if we got amongst them we stood a good chance.
We got off to a good start despite Bernie’s injury sustained during batting. Both the opening bowlers bagged early
wickets. Bernie bowling off about 5 paces because of his pulled fetlock, produced a superb delivery to clean up the
opener. Bondy produced 12 overs of consistent seam bowling to finish with 2-42. Clearly he saw the carnage
coming. Consistent wicket taking following the introduction of Clarky meant our nemesis was in with the score on
75-4. In strolled Sanket Surendra Nayak. Clarky then decided to play him in with some of the worst deliveries
even he had served up in his 46 years. The game then became surreal. At 88-5 we thought we were in and it was
only a matter of time. However it turned in two different games. When Mr Nayak was facing, all fielders were sent
to the far ends of the earth (because he was hitting it that far). Then when his partner was on strike it was all in. 3
slips the lot.
We knew we would get a chance or two, and we did. It fell to Ladders at deep square leg who shelled a fast flat
catch over the boundary for 6 when Mr Nayak was on about 45. What then happened was an excellent display of
hitting by a guy clearly playing way below his league. At one stage the cross channel ferries were in danger as he
despatched all bowlers to all parts with 146 not out- 10 fours and 13 sixes. In no time at all, despite rotating the
bowling and trying to keep him off strike, he totally took the game away from us.
Our bowlers were unable to do anything about it on what was a placid track and the changing of balls in between
trying to find them in the next county didn’t help either. Bowling figures did not look a pretty sight. Anyone under
7 an over got away with it. Bomber, Luke, Alex Hill, Bernie and Clarky were all were victims of the onslaught.
So again for the second time this season. Mr Nayak single handedly won the game. Hawkinge were an interesting
bunch, a Bi-Polar captain and a few load mouths, but otherwise ok. Looks like they will be an interesting addition
to the Kent League next season.
Oh and I forgot about the smell. I found out what it was – HAWKINGE BULLSHIT!!!!.
5th's end season on a high
It has been a good season for the fives but it all came to an end last Saturday at Bexley Park with the final league
match v Mottingham 1st XI. Despite a cut and rolled wicket, the toss was won by Mottingham who decided
wisely, to have a bowl. The track at Bexley Park is always bowler friendly.
Chris Green and Harvi Bassan opened and Chris became the first victim of the unpredictable bounce when one
crept under his bat like a torpedo. 4-1 was not the start we wished for but soon Harvi was digging in and Ian
Shanks certainly looked in the right place, finding two quick boundaries. Shanksy then departed and Deano
Jeffery, promoted up the order, batted well with Harvi pushing the score along with good rotation of strike
allowing H to score freely. There then followed a procession of wickets despite Blandy looking good, hitting hard
and far before being caught at deep mid off going for another four. It was then the Bilal and Harvi show with
some inspired batting on what was becoming a much easier deck to bat on. Harvi rocked on to another 50 before
going on one of his aboriginal "walkabouts" and getting stumped on 50. At the other end Bilal was hitting the ball
hard to the boundary, hitting four fours and two sixes on his way to a good knock of 39 not out. In the whole
scheme of things 147-9 was probably a winning score. Bexley needed to secure maximum points to stay within a
chance of promotion.
Following another substantial "Nikki" tea at the Park, we were quietly confident of rattling through the
Mottingham batting order. Like a replay of our first encounter, the Mottingham opener, Nick McFaul hit a firm
shot to Dicko at cover and fancied taking him on for a second, big mistake as Dicko fired it in one bounce top of
the stumps for Bilal to whip off the bails. Out by a mile and not a good start for the oppo. A small partnership
took the score onto 36 before Bilal and Blandy hit back with a double strike. The first flew to first slip into the
waiting hands of Harvi and the second a snick off to young Alex Shanks, who took the catch so well. Wickets now
falling brought on a little panic in the Mottingham camp. The Bilal/Shanks combination was working well and
young Shanksy snapped up his second victim of the afternoon.
Time for a bowling change with Mike Shelvey from the top end and Dicko at his favourite end. The change soon
worked with both clean bowling numbers 5 and 6. Shelvers bowled an interesting line and length troubling the
incoming batsmen and at the other end Dicko was struggling a bit with his "Doosra" which led to a great catch by
Blandy in the deep off what Mike described as one of the worst balls he has ever bowled.....we all agreed in
unison. However his next, again with a catch by Blandy still out in the long grass, was a typical spinner’s wicket
with the field set right!! Well done Mr D. Shelvers had a little blow and Deano Jeffery bowled two very tight
overs but the wicket taking delights were stolen from him when Dicko, now going through his full repertoire of
flight, guille, flat stuff and wrong un's, picked up the last two wickets. So the old skipper had a bit of a DFA but at
that point he was not bothered as the fives had again picked up a 20 point maximum. That leaves us in a position
where we await the final round of matches next weekend to see if Blue Star CC can steal the promotion spot from
us. Whatever the eventual result, the 5th XI can hold their heads high, putting in a respectable series of results
throughout 2013 playing 16, winning 10, losing 3, tied 1 and 2 abandoned.
It was then back to Manor Way for the usual 5th XI de-brief sponsored by the Sharps Brewery and the Coca Cola
Corporation.
Well done everyone, it has been fun, frustrating at times but I have been proud of all the guys that have represented
the 5th XI this season. Let's hope results go our way!!
Development Team
On a warm Sunday morning a rather inexperienced Bexley CC Sunday Development side turned up at the club to
make the short trip down to Hartley. However, we were to discover that their 1 st XI player Scott Mckechnie was
leading a pretty experienced Hartley line up. The first bad point of the day was when Lushy lost the toss and we
were fielding. Fred Woodgate and Jas Bassan (8-2-28-2) opened the bowling and bowled very tidily. Jas made the
breakthrough by turning one through the gate of the left handed opener, however this sent in McKechnie who set
about dismantling the Bexley CC attack with Jas and skipper Lushy taking some stick as McKecknie hit a few
fours and sixes on his way to a quick fire 26 off 17 balls. However, an inspired decision by captain Lushy to keep
himself on bought about the wicket of Mckechnie as he mistimed a sweep and was caught by Jack Clay at deep
backward square. The fall of this wicket caused Hartley to have a mini collapse as Mike Maietta (with the help of
me) through to the bowlers end to get a run out, Fred got rid of Fonseka and Shaun Evans bowled their number 6
on his way to recording very good figures of 7-0-25-1. However a late flurry from Hartley’s 9 and 10 saw Hartley
reach a respectable score of 232-8 from their 40 overs.
The Bexley chase never really got going with Jack Clay falling early for 4, Aiden for 22 and Mike being run out
for 17. By this point we were falling a fair distance behind the run rate but a spirited innings of 42 from 55 balls
from Angus Dalgleish gave us a glimmer of hope in chasing this down. However, once Angus and Lushy were
dismissed to sharp stumpings off McKechnie’s off spin, Fred set about playing himself into some form with a
spirited 5* off 36 balls and myself 6* off 12 balls and at the end of the 40 overs we had reached 144-7. This was a
losing margin of 88.
Bexley hope for a better finish to the season with the final game this Sunday at Hayes.
