What A Week At Manor Way
The sun shone and over 1000 people watched Lashing’s take on Leigh Academy
Student team.
The ground looked magnificant thanks to Dave Sealey and his army of workers
George takes 5 for 32 off 11.4 overs against
Rainham 2 nd XI for the 4 th XI on Saturday.

Bexley CC was represented by 7 of our own young players
Over 300 people sat down to a 3 course lunch, mixing with the players. It was all too much for some!!
Spectators mingled with the players enjoying the action
Min Patel joined the Lashings team
Some were more interested in the Lashing’s Assistants!!
Chairman Chris Woolley took time off from orchestrating the day to meet players.
Just turn up for a civilised evening of drinking fine wines and no doubt
some smelly cheese!
Some inspired bowling and
fielding from the students
restricted Lashings to 80-5 at
one stage and it took local
legend Min Patel (who
hadn’t expected to bat) with a
quickfire 62 to boost the
score to 176-8 off their
reduced 30 overs. Gordon
Greenidge was out for his
first duck of the season.
Angus Dalgleish (31) and
Harry Furze (40) helped the
students to 100-3. However,
the likes of Courtney Walsh,
Saqlain Mushtaq and Phil de
Freitas (4-23 off 5) then
turned the screw and the
students collapsed to 108 all
out.

Time out from duties to enjoy a stroll around the boundary
An army of volunteers worked tirelessly leading up to Friday, as well as on the day. Stanley Wells, Steve Course
and Jack Bell were on car park duty from 5.30 am, taking abuse from commuters still wanting to park despite
prior warning and in one instance put themselves physically in front of one determined driver. They will be
awarded their George Cross by the Queen later in the year. A team of all ages, led by Lushy and Joe Russell,
kept the BBQ going from early morning until late – not an easy duty in the heat of the day.
John and his band of merry bar staff kept the drinks flowing efficiently for 1000 gasping people – no easy task,
whilst the Bar Committee of Dan Haley, George Newell, Lushy and Coursey stepped in where necessary. Club
Captain George Wells just did as he was told!!
As dusk fell, the band OCD played in the marquee for those still standing and still with energy left to dance.
A special mention to those involved in the big clear up the next morning, leaving the ground looking immaculate
again for Ladies Day and the 2 nd XI match. Roger Hill, Duncan Dalgleigh made sure the flowers were in full
bloom, whilst Paul Pinnock made any running repairs.
The Grounds Committee lead by John Trice and supplemented by newbies U16 Dave Dixon and Jack Clay,
assisted Dave Sealey in preparing the ground and were justifiably praised by Lashings.
The day was so successful that Bexley CC have been asked to host again next year so put Friday 4 th July 2014 in
your diaries. Well Done and Thank You to everyone who helped.

Ladies Day
Saturday again saw the sun beating down on Manor Way for the first Ladies Day.
Pat Ladbrook, seen here
with daughter-in-law,
Dawn, won the Best
Dressed Lady award
with a fetching
ensemble.
The Ladies were greeted with a glass of bubbly and sat down for a 2 course meal in the reduced
marquee. Flowers were presented to each table but unfortunately they had to watch the 2 nd XI ‘stagger’
to a defeat against Sandwich Town, largely due to the effects of the day before.
A special Thank You to Chris Woolley and Alice ‘Wells’ Parker for arranging a very much appreciated
event and it is hoped that Ladies Day will become an annual event for the start of Cricket Week.
Anya Ritson enjoys the chocolate fountain whilst the Ladies relax in the cool.

Match Reports
1 st XI
The 1 st XI travelled to Sibton Park near Folkestone, determined to win, despite some still suffering from the effects
of the Lashing’s match. Winning the toss, Bexley elected to bat first and after a shaky start, saw another Captain’s
innings from George Wells (80), partnered by Jimmy Peirson (25), Mehdi Abbas (50) and Jack Bell (20) before the
team finished on 219 all out.
Jason Benn and Mehdi opened with a tight spell, with just 28 runs from 13 overs. By the time Sibton Park had
batted for 25 overs, they were well behind on the run rate and had decided to start playing for a draw. Min Patel
(3-54 off 15), Henry Pickering (1-43 off 12) and Aiden Griggs (4-32 off 9.5) had other ideas and with the ball
ripping, excellent field placings and fielding, the wickets tumbled. The last wicket fell on 166 in 54.5 overs and full
points to Bexley, placing them 3 rd in the League.
Their next match is away to struggling Sevenoaks Vine.
George digs deep to reach 80 from 116 balls whilst Mehdi fires a quick 50 from 31 balls.
The team celebrate 20 points as the sun goes down. From now on matches are a straight win/lose format.

2 nd XI
The 2 nd XI were the home team entrusted to entertain the Bexley Ladies on Saturday when they hosted Sandwich
Town 2 nd XI.
Winning the toss, Sandwich elected to bat first and made 202 for 8 in 50 overs. Jack Potter took 3 stumpings and
Harry Furze and Jas Bassan took 2 wickets each. After tea, Bexley made a steady start with the bat, with Jack top
scoring with 40 but a middle order collapse left Fraser McWhinnie (15*) and Jordan Parkinson (11) batting for a
draw. Unfortunately Jordan was bowled on the very last ball and Bexley were all out for 175.
Too many extras, including 10 no balls, some sloppy fielding and lose bowling gave the opposition more runs than
deserved and with more aptitude with the bat, was a game that could have been won.
The 2’s host League leaders, Sevenoaks Vine, this Saturday and need to pull together and take the game seriously,
despite it being the end of Cricket Week and raise their game.
3 rd XI
On Saturday the Bexley Village 1 st X1 travelled to Dartfordians looking to put our losing streak to an end. To cut a
long story short, we didn’t and Rick Melbourne’s post match interview went as follows ‘What a load of *$%^’in
*^&(‘in b*****ks.’ Details of the match are pretty hazy with Cricket Week events, but there wasn’t too much on
offer from either side. The game went as follows:
Dartfordians won the toss and put us into bat. They bowled some decent lines early on, but Peggy Mitchell and
Ben Moore looked comfortable in dealing with it. With 20 odd on the board, Dartfordians struck and removed
Peggy, bringing Matt Bennison, having arrived at the ground 2 minutes earlier, to the crease. After a quick de-brief
of the antics from Lashings night, Ben and Matt got their heads in the game. Runs weren’t coming easily,
particularly with Ben’s dicky hamstring conveniently only allowing him to run for his own shots (when he rarely
played one), but the pair stuck at it, putting another 50 on the score, before Matt holed out for 35.
Next in was Strouds, and a leg side full toss came his way first ball. His eyes lit up, but what happened next wasn’t
exactly as he’d planned, spooning the ball to the infield. Quack Quack. From then on no one really settled, apart
from Ben ‘Boycott’ Moore, who eventually departed for 15 from 734 balls. We were soon 9 down, with the score
on 120. Clarkey walked in, promising us he’d take the score to 180. That didn’t quite happen and after a couple of
good boundaries, Blandy was out and our innings was over for the total of 128.
Tea was a pretty quiet affair without Pasky dishing out questions and we were soon back out looking to defend our
total. The first ball of Dartfordian’s innings was pretty eventful, with Clarkey seeing how many of the 129 runs
required the oppo could get from it, fielding well but forgetting to throw the ball in. He looked like a man that was
already eyeing up a few Mwhahs back at the club. We bowled fairly well, and only a couple of their batsman
looked threatening. With such a low total to defend though, we didn’t create enough chances and Dartfordians
painfully nudged their way to the target, taking what felt like 12 hours. The spinners picked up a couple of wickets
towards the end, with Bomber’s flippers, googlies and arm balls causing the tail enders all sorts of problems, but
they eventually crept over the line 8 wickets down.
Hopefully we’ll get back on track this weekend after a few Cricket Week Jaegers and an England win.
Matt Bennison

4 th XI
After losing the toss and being inserted to bat, as the Hollingbourne Captain wasn't sure of what a good score was
at DGS, Jack and Chris opened the batting, putting on around 40. Then a steady loss of wickets left us 103-6 with
Newell and Addington at the crease. Both George's batted well and scored 32 each. But after looking at posting a
good score of above 200 we ended up 179 all out in 36 overs.
After a lovely tea provided by the Saunders family, we went out to field. Ryan Saunders and Will Smith opened
the bowling and with a mixture of poor bowling and fielding, Hollingbourne raced to 100-2 off 17 overs. After a
severe ticking off from myself and Will Smith at the drinks break, we came back out and the game changed with 3
quick wickets, including that of their captain (77) leaving the game in the balance. Some good bowling from Will
and Shaun Evans left Hollingbourne requiring 19 with 2 wickets left. Lushy then came on and took a wicket in his
first over before, with 1 wicket required, we dropped 2 catches and missed a run out opportunity. However with 8
still required their number 8 chipped a chance back to Lushy, which he thankfully caught and a 7 run victory was
completed. A learning experience for all and the players would have taken a lot from what proved to be a brilliant
victory.
Lush & Newell

5 th XI
On a very hot Saturday the 5ths hosted Dartfordian 3 rd XI at Bexley Park. The wicket was still pretty rough and
after losing the toss went out to field. Dean Jeffery and Robbie Taylor opened the bowling and bowled well,
restricting the runs but the first wicket didn’t fall until the 19 th over through a good catch from Harvi Bassan off
the bowling of Mike Dixon. The drinks break did the trick and their 2 nd opener was quickly removed with the
score on 70. Mike continued bowling and took 4-21 off 10 overs and then an inspired decision by Captain Griggsy
to bring on Tabish Nadeem, who then took 5-2 off 3 overs. Dartfordians all out for 117.
Batting after tea, openers Harvi and Dean Jeffery were under orders to just bat sensibly chasing the low score. In
the 3 rd over Harvi wafted one to the wicket keeper. From then on Ian Shanks (22) and Dave Dixon (27) batted
well together but then 3 quick wickets left us wondering if we were going to make the total. Gary Carter (22*)
steered us closer but was let down by the tail enders and with only 1 run to win and 9 wickets down, the skipper
failed to score the winning run – match tied. It felt more like a loss but still 15 points puts us 4 th in the table.
Club Conference Cup
Sunday saw a young and weary team travel to Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire for the 3 rd round of the Club
Conference Cup, having avoided major accidents both south and north on the M25.
Beaconsfield won the toss and decided to bat first after looking at Bexley’s young side. Mehdi and Harry took up
the challenge and by the 9 th over had Beaconsfield 26-4 taking 2 wickets each. Captain George liked the way the
ball was swinging and decided to join the attack, cleaning up the remaining batsmen, taking 5 wickets for 17 off
6.3 overs. Rob took 4 catches behind the stumps and a run out by Belly finished the innings. Beaconsfield were
all out for 69 in 22.3 overs and after being enticed out of their dressing room, came out for a quick turn around.
Deciding it was a good opportunity for the youngest members to bat up the order, Bexley also struggled before Jas
dug in to top score with 15 and George hit the winning runs in 19.3 overs.
Two sets of hot and tired players then walked across the pitch to be greeted by a tea that consisted of a quarter
sandwich and a cake – Joe Caunt’s comments cannot be repeated here!!
The quarter final draw has Bexley CC playing Brentwood CC on the 28 th July. Luckily it will be a home draw so
the lads can have a decent tea and lots of support.
George takes a fifer and leads
the team off to the quarter
finals

After the weekend’s matches, Cricket Week started in earnest on Monday
Peter Wellard XI featured some great names from the past against a Club X1, captained by Coursey, who swapped
his white coat for a Bexley shirt. Anthony Wellard won the toss and led the batting attack - from number 11.
Pasky hit one of his gigantic 1’s and was bowled next ball. Chris W decided to join him on 1 before being bowled
by Coursey. Ian Mobey hit a quick 34 from 38 balls before Alex Picksley bowled him. Graham Ball top scored
with 38 and they were all out for 231 (thanks to Chris’ 1) in 49.5 overs.
After a splendid lunch prepared by Pam Wellard, Pat Ladbrook and Gill Rudduck. Coursey also led the batting
attack - from number 11. Jack Clay and Jack Bell were the only 2 not completely stuffed from lunch so opened,
putting on 64 before Jack C was caught behind by Ed Tyler from Cheesy’s bowling. Belly went onto to score 107
from 105 balls before falling to the tempting bowling of Anthony. Newelly wimped out on 46 to Mobes and the
Strouds/Kingy partnership reached the total in 39.5 overs. Woolley managed to blagg the wicket of Stuart
Ladbrook, so after bowling 5 wickets for 15 runs, has decided to take up cricket again.
Mobes watches Jack bowl whilst Jimmy appeals after every ball, finally getting a wicket in his 8 th over
Jordan is convinced he bowls better after a drink so calls for a cider but still couldn’t get Anthony out
Jack scores his first 100 this season whilst Pasky attempts to catch Kingy

Bexley’s Got Talent
The evening saw the much loved Bexley’s Got Talent, with Martin Pask as compere. He was under strict
instructions to tone down the content and language and although it was a struggle, he did manage this.
The judges this year were Alice ‘Wells’ Parker, Matt Cheesbrough and George Newell, who was also under strict
instructions from his Mum to watch what he said about the acts!!! This led to a few ‘No Comments’.
The evening began by a selection of dance routines by members of the Dance School followed by young Olivia
Wellard who showed she doesn’t take after Dad and Uncle when it comes to having talent – thank goodness.
Next up was Princess Chloe O’Sullivan and her troupe of singers, sounding very professional despite being called
up as a late entry.
Martin then decided to do a card
trick, choosing Chris as his victim
– stick to bowling Martin. Steve Course could barely
move after his long
bowling and batting spells
during the day but managed
to sound the best he ever
has. This proves that it is
others singing around him
that make him go off key.
His disguise had us all
fooled!!

Chloe and Sully – with an impressive Dolly Partridge
chest that lit up Sully’s eyes as they sang
Islands in the Stream.
Will Smith battled through and earnt a
‘No Comment’ from Newelly.
Ben Moore and George Laing did a fantastic
rendition of Queen’s I want to Break Free
Derek Wells bought the house down with his
version of Jake The Peg.
The 2013 Winner of Bexley’s got Talent was DEREK WELLS

Bar Games
After the Talent Show, it was all inside the Clubhouse to introduce Jimmy and Amy to Bexley’s own Anthem and
other songs. After they witnessed Bexley’s version of bar games – very different to those played in Oz!
Stanley decides the floor is dirty and prepares it
ready for cleaning. Nick does his best to add a shine.
Jimmy and Amy have a go
Joe slides in his best suit whilst Martin strips off, as did Alan but those photos are censored! Colin is game.
Owen gets a soaking to ‘wet the baby’s head’. Stuart revs up for his attempt. Captain George is a pro.
