Manor Way Festival – 14 th June
On another hot and mainly sunny Sunday, by special order of Sue Towers, the Bexley Manor Way
Festival was again a big success and enjoyed by all.
Due to the hard work of the many volunteers, team managers, umpires, scorers and parents
everything ran smoothly and the 170 + boys and girls all went away with many memories and a sense
of achievement. The 3 Bexley teams representing the Club, all played their matches with some fine
performances and great sportsmanship. A special mention to the U9 team who gave the U11 team a
good run for their money and are definitely a team to watch out for in the future.
The final of the John Gough Memorial Plate was played between Bexley U10’s and Dartfordians (last
year’s winners). After a close game, Bexley managed to win by 3 runs to become the first Bexley team
to win the Plate. They learnt as the day went on, coming strong in the final. Anne Gough and her
grandson came down to enjoy the spectacle and present the Plate to the boys.
Bexley U11’s faced Sidcup, who had looked very strong all day, in the final of the Manor Way Trophy.
Sidcup bowled very tightly and intelligent batting saw them win by 26 runs with the loss of 1 wicket,
despite some very active fielding from Bexley.
Well Done to all who participated in some way to the success of the day.
Latest Match News
Saturday saw the 1 st XI away to Gore Court, strengthened by Kent’s James Tredwell, making his first
appearance for Bexley. Bexley, batting first, reached 272 for the loss of 5 wickets, with James making 120 of
the runs, Jibran Khan 49 and Adam Ball 44. Gore Court were restricted to 121 all out, after Jason Benn took 4
wickets for 25 off 7, Babar Khan took 2 for 13 off 4 and James also took 2 wickets for 12 off 5. Jibran took 2
catches and a stumping behind the wicket.
We hope James enjoyed playing for Bexley as much as the rest of the team and Bexley spectators enjoyed
watching his performance. We look forward to seeing him in action at Manor Way, inspiring our younger
players and colts, along with enjoying a Bexley tea and hospitality.
The 2 nd XI played Gore Court 2 nd XI at Manor Way but couldn’t emulate the 1 st XI’s success. Bexley were all out
for 117 in 34.2 overs, with George Wells top scoring with 27. Despite Joe Russell’s catch and 2 wickets for 24
off 8 overs, along with 2 catches from George, Gore Court reached the total in 31.4 overs for the loss of 4
wickets.
The 3 rd XI played at Bexley Park against their 1 st XI and were put into bat first. An excellent batting
performance saw Bexley put 252 on the scoreboard for the loss of 5 wickets. Ryan Griggs scored his first
century for the Club, reaching 111, with 9 x4’s and 4x6’s. Murtz Abbas scored 39, with Matthew Cheesbrough
and Pete Roser, both not out on 35 and 34 respectively. Bexley Park reached 189 all out, with Dan Johnson
taking 4 catches behind the stumps and two excellent run outs by Steve King. Murtz picked up 4 wickets for 50
off 10.4 overs, whilst Pete Roser and Martin Pask took 2 wickets each. It was good to see ex Bexley members,
Joe and Craig Thomas in action, along with dad, Martin, watching.
The 4 th XI playing High Halstow CC 2 nd XI at Loring Hall, could only reach 104 all out, with only George Newell
with 18 runs and Max Pickering with 31* making double figures with the bat. High Halstow reached the total in
23.3 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. Stanley Wells performed well with the ball taking 2 wickets for 8 runs off 6,
whilst George took the only other wicket.
After a last minute change of venue, the 5 th XI played Dulwich 4 th XI at Foots Cray RFC. Batting first, Dulwich
were all out for 125, with Henry Pickering taking 3 wickets for 27 and George Lush taking 2 wickets. Bexley
reached the score with the loss of 9 wickets, with George top scoring on 22.
Bexley 6 th XI travelled to Dulwich with a young team, supported by a few ‘old timers’! Bowling first, Bexley
restricted Dulwich to 175 for the loss of 9 wickets. Dave Wenham took 3 wickets for 48 off 15, George Bland
also took 3 wickets for 16 off 5 and Sean Austin 2 wickets (and a catch) for 45 off 7. A special mention to Andy
Saunders making his debut for Bexley, chasing everything on the field like a youngster after a 22 year ‘rest’
from cricket. He can currently be visited in the local rehabilitation unit. Despite a fine innings of 57 from
Gareth Jones, supported by Alex Neeley’s 27, Sean Austin’s 12 and Dave Wenham’s 10 runs, Bexley could only
reply with 135 all out.
On Sunday Bexley travelled to Shepherds Bush CC in the 2 nd round of the Conference Cup. Shepherds Bush
won the toss and elected to bat first, making 203 all out in 44.3 overs. Bexley responded by reaching the total
in 36.5 overs for the loss of 5 wickets, with Adam Ball making 51*.
Tuesday saw the next round of the 20/20 at Manor Way against Tunbridge Wells. Batting first, Tunbridge
Wells reached 124 for 9, with Adam Riley taking 2 wickets for 18 off 4 and Babar Khan 2 wickets for 22 off 4. A
spirited innings from Bexley looked like we could just win, with Adam Ball looking on form, until he was run out
on 44. Bexley finished on 116 for the loss of 8 wickets.
The Sunday 1 st XI play Bickley Park in the Club Cricket Conference Cup round 3, at Manor Way this Sunday,
whilst the Development Team are away to Bromley.
All match fixtures and results can be found on the Club’s website bexley.play-cricket.com along with player’s
statistics.

Colts’ News
The U16’s played hosts to Dartford at Manor Way. Batting first, Bexley put 175 for the loss of 5
wickets, with Richie Barclay scoring 53 and Max Pickering 36. Both Stanley Wells and Will Robinson
took 2 wickets for 5 off 3 overs, helping to restrict Dartford to 82 for 8 wickets in their 24 overs.
The U15’s played Dartford at Waller Park and took to the field first. Dartford batted well, putting 175
for the loss of 7 wickets. Lewis O’Brien took 2 stumpings and a run out behind the stumps. Bexley
were all out for 86, with Alex Neely top scoring with 20.
The U14’s match on Sunday was postponed due to District matches and their U14 Frank Knott Cup
game against Sidcup on Monday had to be abandoned due to rain.
The U13’s travelled to Broadstairs CC for the Kent ¼ finals of the MCC Spirit of Cricket National Cup
last Thursday. Bexley batted first and reached 125 for 4 in 20 overs, with Harry Furze top scoring on
36*. Bexley came out to bowl and had Broadstairs pinned down for 20 for 3 wickets off 7overs, Harry
Furze taking 2 for 6 off 3 overs, when the heavens opened and the wicket became waterlogged .
Broadstairs, in the true meaning of the ‘spirit of cricket’ graciously conceded the game to save Bexley
travelling down to the Kent coast again but agreed to play a friendly during the summer holidays. The
semi finals draw will be on the 22 nd June.
The U12’s Cup game had to be abandoned due to rain on Monday after a promising start for Bexley.
Jack Laing took 4 stumpings and a catch behind to help restrict Chislehurst & West Kent to 92 all out
but heavy rain stopped play with Bexley on 32 for the loss of 1 wicket off 5 overs. It will be replayed
Wednesday 24 th June. They then travelled to Hartley on Tuesday for a league game against their
U13’s. Batting first, Hartley were all out for 75 in 19.2 overs, due to tight bowling and excellent
fielding from the Bexley lads. Aiden Griggs took 3 wickets for 1 run off 4 overs, along with a catch and
William Challis took 2 wickets for 7 off 2.2 overs. Bexley reached the target with the loss of 1 wicket in
11 overs. Jack Laing and Aiden retired on 25*, with Harrison Williams and Jonny Regnier batting well
to take the team to victory.
The Bexley girl’s were away to Sidcup for the U13’s match on Friday. Batting first Bexley reached 121
for the loss of 1 wicket in their 24 overs, with Emily Thompson top scoring on 18*. In reply, Sidcup
girls made 109 for the loss of 7 wickets, with Lucy Poulton taking a catch and 2 wickets for 8 off 3
overs. Rochelle Beeson bowled very tightly for 1 wicket for 2 off 2 overs.
Member Profile – Bar Chairmen
Patrick O’Sullivan and Stuart Bell
Two of the biggest personalities at Bexley can be found
behind, in front or under the bar!
Joining forces this year to jointly Chair the Bar Committee,
Patrick and Stuart spend many hours testing the beer for
the Members and thinking up ways to increase profit margins.
With many years between them of socialising and serving in different capacities at the Club, one or
both are usually found around the Clubhouse or the boundary. Stuart has also been a colt’s manager,
steering young, impressionable minds to victory and antics on and off the field. He also serves on the
Ground and Pavilion Committee and occasionally will stir something in the kitchen. Patrick is the
father of Richard (‘Sully’), known to a few of you – Richard is the sensible one!
They are always happy to welcome and train new volunteers, especially for 2 hour stints during
Cricket Week. A bar rota will be up on the bar for those with a sense of humour and adventure. They
are hoping colts will offer to collect glasses for an hour here and there, to help with keeping the beer
free flowing. It is good fun, unless you are doing a shift with Rick Melbourne, when you need to wear
steel toe caps rather than flip flops!
They would also like to hear from anyone who has a couple of spare hours a week to regularly clean
the beer pipes or would like to join the Bar Committee.
“Our cricket club is a place all other clubs love to come to. Last weekend saw St Lawrence, Hythe
and Orpington spend the evening with us, although we didn’t have a fixture against any of them.
They all commented on what a great club we have. On a more serious note – Patrick will have half
of Timothy Taylor and I’ll have a Magners with ice!
Enjoy the rest of the season and COME ON THE CLUB.”
**Stop Press**
We would like to apologise for the delay in the provision of kit this year and appreciate your
understanding.

There is now a roller and stiff broom kept permanently by the nets under a tree. All adult members
can use both before using the nets if required. Colts should not use the roller but can sweep the nets
clear of leaves. Please put back after use.
