Individual Performances Continue
On a weekend of close matches, some excellent personal performances made the
difference.
George Wells makes his first League 100 U17 Rob Semhi scores his first 100
to steer the 1 st XI to top of the table
for Bexley in Conference Cup
After scoring 99 last week, George scored
Chasing 210, Rob’s 109 from 147 balls was a
100 this week, out of the team’s 176 total significant contribution to a nail biting finish
George Bland takes first fifer of season
George takes 5 for 32 off 11.4 overs against
Men’s Matches
1 st XI
The 1st XI arrived at Bromley CC on Saturday knowing that nothing short of a win would be satisfactory if we were
going to put pressure on the Premier League leaders, Hartley.
For the first time this season, we found ourselves batting first after losing the toss. Despite the green tint to the
wicket, one could have be forgiven for thinking the innings was going to be straight forward after Jimmy Peirson
dispatched a short ball from Wayne Morgan on the first ball of the day for a one bounce four. That myth was
brought to light just 3 balls later as Jimmy was on his way back to the pavilion after edging a good ball from
Morgan through to the keeper. George Wells joined elder brother Jack at the crease and both batters were under
pressure by the opening bowlers. If the wicket-keeper had held onto his second chance of the day, then George
would have been the 2nd Bexley batsman to depart. However, a sloppy piece of glove work would prove a crucial
point in the match. Jack Wells and Angus Dalgleish both made 12 before being caught behind and Bexley were
struggling to build a telling partnership. Sandeep Bains joined George and hit two flourishing boundaries before
edging to slip, also for 12. By the time Min Patel had come and gone for 5, the Bexley innings was in danger of
collapse. Mehdi Abbas was able to build a small partnership of 35 with the captain, but then fell LBW for 18,
leaving Bexley on 149-6. That soon became 164-8 when both Harry Furze and Maruf Chowdhury fell cheaply.
Jason Benn came to the wicket, and he was soon congratulating his skipper as George went to a very workmanlike
century, who was then bowled by the very next delivery. Henry Pickering's dismissal brought the innings to a close,
all out for 176. It was a somewhat disappointing score but with the seam movement, we knew we had a chance of
winning, if the bowlers got the ball in the right areas.
After a magnificent tea, courtesy of Martin 'Mike Brearley' Jackson, Bexley took to the field. Jason Benn had an
immediate impact, surprising the dangerous Wayne Morgan with a short ball, who skied the ball to Harry Furze for
just 4. Jason then sent the other opening batsman on his way, having edged behind to Jimmy. Maruf took slightly
longer to loosen up and find a good line and length but when he did, the results were devastating for the Bromley
batsmen. Former Bexley, Kent and Surrey batsman, Richard Clinton, snicked a good ball to George at 2nd slip and
then Charlie Walker tickled another to Jimmy. The hosts were soon in more trouble when Min Patel had David
Smith caught by Henry Pickering. With Bromley on 50-5, Bexley were looking good for the 20 points. Bromley
skipper, James Butterfill, joined Miguel Barbosa and after a few tense overs, the pair were beginning to find the
middle of the bat. They had taken the score along to 94-5 before an inspired decision to bring part-time pie chucker,
Sandeep Bains, on to bowl. Sandeep got the crucial breakthrough when he drew a false stroke from Butterfill. The
ball nestling safely in the hands of Maruf. Min's second spell started well when we had Barbosa stumped for a well
made 52. At 112-7, Bexley were in a position they couldn't lose from. However, to get full points we had to bowl
Bromley out. A job in which Jason and Min delivered in style. Bromley 130 all out.
Jason Benn, was the star with the ball yet again, with figures of 15 overs, 4 wickets for 38 runs.
With results elsewhere in the league going our way, it left us 4 points clear at the top of the table as we head into
Saturday's home game against Premier League newbies, Whitstable.
2 nd XI
This week saw the 2s at home to Bromley, in what everyone thought was going to be a close game. Dan won the
toss and put Bromley into a bat on what looked like a typical Manor Way wicket. With the sun out and the team
in good spirits everyone was excited for the game.
With myself and Fraser McWhinnie raring to go opening the bowling, early wickets were sure to be needed.
After the openers took a liking to what was, at best, some average bowling from the opening pair, Bromley were
off to a flying start. No 1 batsman made a quick fire 23 before being dismissed by Stanley Wells coming on 1 st
change. After the other opener was dropped at slip for about 10 by Dan Haley, was the team going to pay? Jas
Bassan came on and Bexley started to take control of the innings and with some fine bowling from the 2 spinners,
wickets started to fall for Bromley. Jas ended his spell with figures of 15 overs 4 maidens 2 for 35 in what was an
excellent spell. At the other end Aiden Griggs bowled a good spell, although the wicket ball was the worst one
and finished with 8 overs 1 for 20. Bromley carried on to make steady progress and ended the innings on 176 for
8. By far the best fielding performance of the season for the 2 XI and some great bowling to back it up.
At tea we reconciled on the 1 st innings and thought about our long batting line up down to 9 with me at 10. The
spirits were high, so we sent out Gary Myers and Dan Haley to knock off the runs and have an early bed time.
This was not to be, as a couple of dodgy at best, decisions saw Dan Haley, Gary Myers and Rob Sehmi dismissed
for only 13 between all three of them. With Bexley on the back foot, Murtz and Joe Caunt came the crease ready
to rebuild the innings. This wasn’t to be when Joe was dismissed for only 6, the innings looked to be going
quickly downhill. Bexley’s luck never changed and after some poor running Murtz was run out for 20, it was
going to be hard to recover.
It was difficult to watch and maybe a dressing room nap was needed - mentioning no names. Some scores from
the lower middle order made it frustrating and with 20 from Stan and 28* from Aiden, Bexley managed to sweat
it out for the losing draw and we finished at 111-9. Overall our worst batting performance of the year and a lot to
improve on going into next week’s game down at Whitstable.
Jordan Parkinson
Bromley pile on the pressure to try and get the last wicket but Aiden and Fraser hold out for
the losing draw.
3 rd XI
When asked to do the match report for the 3's, I thought I would do it in a diary format so all you non cricketers
(Stuart Bell) could have an insight of what it is like to be an elite athlete, like Rick Melbourne or Deano, who are at
the top of their game.
So Saturday morning 10am, my usual ritual is wake up, have an SW (sandwich), drop dog at mums and head to the
meet, excited at the prospect of finding out who we are playing.
12pm – result - I get to travel to the game with the skipper, will we talk about tactics, field placings, the batting line
up? Nope " That ******** Dan Haley rang me last night and has ******* taken ******* Peggy Mitchell, you
don’t take a ******** opener to bat him six ***** ***** ***** (in total there were 24 expletives in this 7 mile
journey)
12.30pm - we arrive at the ground to find the home team cutting the square with a flymo - Oh the delights of top
class cricket, I felt like Brian Lara.
12.30-1.15pm - Warm up, standard two lines fielding drill, loads of mis-fields and more expletives from Melbourne.
Lost toss and Bat first.
1.30pm Batsmen head to the crease.
1.31pm Run Machine, Craig Richley, heads back from the middle having secured his 3rd consecutive duck of the
season - well batted son.
1.32pm Stewie Ladders goes into bat, it was such a classy knock I will give you a ball by ball breakdown.
dot, dot, pad, pad, dropped, dot, 4, dot, pad, dropped, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, run out, called back, dot, dot, dropped, edge 4,
pad, dot, 3, dropped, 4, 2 - OUT for 31.
2.00pm - In comes Big Ben Moore, who between himself and Jonathon Trott are on a 2 man crusade to ‘kill cricket’
4.00pm - Ben was eventually out, having got 20 off 156 balls, some of the spectators had taken to self harming
during this excruciating knock, just to pass the time.
4.00pm - Good news though, Bens exploits, or lack of them, meant I was promoted up the order to have a Bash.
Melbourne gave me a message on my way out "You don’t have to ******** smash every ball out the *********
ground, play yourself in you ****". He is like Mike Brearley, our Melbourne.
4.01pm - First ball to the Monty Panesar lookalike, with the captain’s words still ringing in my ears, I thought I
would block this one and promptly edged it to slip, golden duck " Thank you very much."
4.03pm - Melbourne out for 0
4.10pm - Ben Peters 0
4.15pm - Clarky out for 0
I never saw any of them, I was having my second and third SW of the day. Kingy gave us some resistance with 10
not out and the real brains behind the captain, Nick Stroudley, a solid 33. All out 130.
TEATIME and my question of the day - alarmingly Kingy elected to be a gay man for the next 6 months, I blame
Sully.
Ok the oppo then batted.
5.15pm Kingy strikes first with a delivery that cut back beautifully and was rewarded by Dave Counter with a well
earned caught behind, despite it being off his thigh pad.
5.15-5.45pm I bagged a couple of wickets at the other end, but as you know - It’s NOT All About Me - the stumps
played a part and duly fell to the ground as I managed to get the ball to jag back a couple of times.
3 rd XI cont ….
5.45-6.30pm A nip and tuck game in the field, where Ben Peters got 1, Jolyon Bond bounced out two of their top
guns, before Ben Peters trapped their main man LBW, what happened next was just like being at Lords.
Their bloke on boundary "You cheating ****"
Ben Moore "Shut up"
Their bloke "You shut up, at least let him finish the appeal"
Ben Moore "**** off"
Their bloke "No, you **** off
In the words of Danny Dyer, this one was getting a "bit naughty"
6.30-7.15pm Anyway back to the cricket, Blackheath are 127 for 7, only 4 to win, it must be all over. I'm bowling,
shall I bowl him a beamer and lose it with a no ball? Nah, I'll just get a wicket and a few dots so they can get the
winning runs off Melbourne and I can blame him for the defeat.
7.16pm Unbelievably the score had managed to sneak its way up from 127/8 to 129 in the time it took us to change
ends. The cheats - I love it.
7.17pm Melbourne bowling the last over with 2 to win, remarkably, the following happened -
dot, dot, bowled, dot, dot LBW - the reject from Right Said Fred had only bloody done it! We had taken the last 3
wickets for no runs - oi oi oi
That’s 4 wins from 4 - promotion is on the radar.
And for those sceptics like Stuart ‘Mr Potato Head, Cleveland Brown’ Bell - "That’s how it’s done - BOOM"
Martin Pask
Rick and Martin had fun taking wickets. Dave stayed cool throughout the
verbal exchanges.
…and we thought Loring Hall was bad!!
Thumbs up from Ben Nick top scores with 33
after winning the verbal battle
4 th XI
We arrived at Dartford Grammar with the pitch and outfield looking in fantastic shape and I couldn’t see why
anybody would complain about it. Rainham however arrived at Loring Hall to find a very green wicket, no
groundsman or opposition! When they eventually turned up to DGS they lost the toss and I put them into bat.
Blandy and Ryan once again opened the bowling and bowled tightly as per usual with Blandy picking up two early
wickets with good catches from Grant and Lushy. Then their Sasquatch came to the crease, he found a good way
to counter act the slow outfield by not using it and hitting two sixes in his score of 13. Lushy then hit him on the
toe in front of middle and umpire Course had his first victim. Sasquatch wasn’t happy and proceeded to step onto
the next wicket and protest that it had actually hit him on that wicket but after he saw the umpire turn from Stephen
Course to Steven Seagal, he quickly made his way to the changing room.
Fred Woodgate reminds me of myself, when I used to be a bowler before I turned into the 4’s VVS Laxman, he
once again bowled 5 overs for barely anything and was unlucky not to get a wicket. Then after about 30 overs of
watching him warm up, I brought on Will Smith and with his third ball he bowled a half tracker which got pulled
straight to me at mid-wicket. He ended with 2-21 off his overs. Blandy came on and cleaned up the tail as usual
and ended with 5 for 32 off 12 overs and he didn’t shut up about it for the whole of our innings!
Rainham 130 all out.
Our reply didn’t start off too great as we lost Alex Picksley early before Jonny and Mr H Bassan steadied the ship.
Jonny was unlucky to be run-out when the wicket-keeper appeared to knock the bails off with his gloves and after
doing half of the Macarena, their umpire eventually put his finger up. Grant and Harvi then pushed us up past 50
before Grant was bowled. We lost a few quick wickets, including Harvi for a well played 25, leaving us struggling
on 66-6 after around 38 overs, making it seem unlikely that we would now win the game.
Myself, Blandy and then Ryan Saunders decided to block good balls and then try to score of any bad balls that
were bowled. With their captain’s bowling making me look like Brett Lee it was difficult to pierce the infield and
when you did it only went another 10 yards as it got stopped by the long outfield. After a bad over, which we
managed to score 10 off, we required 25 off 3 overs with two wickets in hand. This proved to be a bit too much for
myself (20*) and Ryan (19*) to do and we finished on 121-8. A disappointing result, due to us probably giving
them10-15 too many in the field but we did cost them 10 points.
Next week is away at Macknade where, after flying home on Friday night after a week in Magaluf, Lushy will be
Captain.
George Newell
Coursey looks ready to play himself
but has done a great job behind
the stumps
and enjoys watching Blandy get his fifer
5 th XI
Destruction by Dixon.......Power Hitting by Bleksley
The 5th XI arrived at the Ex Blues Ground to take on Old Wilsonians in their third league game of the season. With
an average age of 42, the Bexley team was brimming with "experience". The midweek rain had left the track quite
damp and a generous growth of grass influenced SG's decision to bowl having won the toss.
‘Young’ Robbie Taylor opened up from the downhill end and after a couple of rangefinders, soon had the OW's
batsmen floundering with a lot of playing and missing but despite a tidy spell of 0-12 off 8 including 5 maidens,
wickets failed to come his way. Up the hill trundled SG and got an immediate breakthrough in quite bizarre fashion
when the OW's batsman somehow hit the ball on to his forehead which looped up into the waiting hands of Ian
Shanks. Two overs later a second strike with a good length ball seaming away was snicked by their number 3 into
the new gloves of Gary Carter. SG bowled 8 overs, 2-12 and the OW's run rate was at about 1.5 an over. A special
mention for Mike Shelvey who in about the 5th over in one swooping move, collected the ball at mid on and threw
it down to the stumps at the keepers end to dismiss their opener. Standards expected in the 5th XI!! Mike then took
over at the top end and very soon had a wicket to his name with a sharp catch off his own bowling. Drinks were
rapidly approaching and the plan was to try and nip one out. Mike Dixon obliged, bowling their number 4, who had
looked quite threatening with the bat. At the break OW's were 45-4 and the pressure put on by the bowlers and
some very good ground fielding had paid off. Straight after drinks, Shelvers bowling his usual steady stuff, clipped
the top of off stump and 5 down. Wickets continued to fall and Mike Dixon had them truly pinned down, whilst
Chris Green took over down the hill duties and soon joined the party with a return catch. Despite some stubborn
batting from their number 9 (36*) the remaining few wickets were taken by Mike D. The "pace" of his delivery to
take the last wicket was such that it forced the batsmen to tread down his stumps! Mike finished with an impressive
return of 4-15 off 9 overs. All out for 90, job halfway done and a sit down to another excellent OW's tea.
Paul James and Blekkers opened up and soon found the boundary on a number of occasions mixed with some very
good singles. This was to be the downfall of Paul who, responding to a Bleksley call, was running up the hill and a
direct hit run out was the result. Dean Webster joined Blekkers at the wicket, who probably feeling a tad guilty for
the run out of his senior partner, took it upon himself to finish the game in true Blekkers style with fours and sixes,
the winning shot a straight six over mid off and 53 not out. Another solid display by the 5th XI who now hold
second spot in the league with a game in hand.
Steve Griggs
Conference Cup
Sunday saw the 1 st XI take on Tunbridge Wells in the Conference Cup fixture at Manor Way. On a sunny day,
George Wells won the toss and elected to have a bowl. The Bexley bowlers struggled early on to find line and
length due to the attacking nature of the Tunbridge batsmen. They raced away. However, Jasd Bassan who bowled
a very economical spell picked up 2 wickets for only 13 runs off 9 overs. Mehdi Abbas also bowled well picking
up 3 wickets. In the end Tunbridge Wells managed 210 off their 45 overs, a very competitive total.
In reply Bexley lost 2 early wickets and found themselves 45 for 2 off 23 overs. However, Rob Sehmi opened up,
hitting his maiden century for Bexley losing 4 cricket balls in the process! Joe Caunt hit a very useful 43 before
Mehdi Abbas arrived, scoring 40 off just 30 balls. Jas brought us victory by hitting the winning boundary with just
3 balls remaining. We play Stanmore CC, Middlesex, away in the next round on Sunday 16 th June.
Colt’s News
Colt’s matches resume this week after the half term break.
U18
The U18’s played their first 20/20 match at Manor Way against Orpington last Friday. Batting first, Bexley went
at an average of 7 per over, reaching 147 off their 20 overs for 6 wickets. Angus Dalgleish top scored with 57*
from 45 balls and Rob Sehmi blasted a quick 31 from 19 balls at the end.
Orpington struggled with the Bexley bowling and fielding and could only manage 70 from their 20 overs for the
loss of 9 wickets. Jas Bassan took 3 wickets for 12 runs off 4 overs, with Rob taking 2 catches and a stumping
behind the stumps.
U13A
U13A's Hit One Hundred and Eighty!!!!
Greenwich Juniors hosted the U13A's and after winning the toss, the Juniors put Bexley into bat. Jack O'Hare (25
retired no) and Alex Shanks (26 retired no) started the ball rolling with some excellent running and finding regular
boundaries. Despite losing some middle order wickets the runs kept coming, helped along by a generous extras
tally. Nathan Zeqiri (12) and Harry Golding (27 retired no) batted well once they got going and the score was
probably now beyond the reach of the Greenwich team. After 24 overs Bexley had scored 180 for 6.
Despite some excellent opening bowling from Sam Barton and Lucas Hart, wickets were evading the Bexley
bowlers. The run rate was very slow but wickets were not falling with the regularity required and concentration
was affected. Getting it back on track wickets started to fall and an inspired spell of bowling by Archie Hobbs-
Moore proved the key, finishing with figures of 3 overs, 4-6 including a wicket maiden. The tail was finished off
by Matt Dawson and the game was over with 5 overs to spare. A good win for the U13A's which puts them
temporarily top of their league with Blackheath hot on their heels, six points behind with a game in hand over
Bexley. It's shaping up to be quite a battle.
