1927 to 2009
The Pavillion – by Roger Hill Club Historian
Have you ever wondered when the current pavilion was built and what it looked like?
The original ‘Shack’, located near the nets, was burnt down in 1898 and a replacement was built on
the present Clubhouse site. The present pavilion was built in the spring of 1927 and at the time it
was widely agreed to be the best cricket pavilion in the area.
A special feature of the building was the flat roof, where spectators could sit in deckchairs and get a
good view of the match. The scorers also sat on the upper deck, in a ‘sentry type’ box. The upper
deck was reached by a wooden staircase on the left-hand side of the pavilion, where the bar store is
now. The upper deck was enclosed by a pretty white wooden balustrade which was decorated with
bunting and flowers in Cricket Week. The upper terrace remained in use until the 1960’s, when
rotting woodwork made it unsafe.
By modern standards, the facilities were very primitive. There was no electricity until 1930, when a
total of 7 single lights were installed, there were no hot showers, the toilets were outside and there
was nothing to cool the beer!
In the 1930’s the teas were provided free by the ladies from the big houses in the village, often with
their maids serving at the tables. Despite providing the teas, women were not allowed in the pavilion
in the evening.
Since cricket was resumed in 1946 after the War, many additions have been made, including the
canopy in 2006/7 but the 1927 pavilion is still at the heart of the building, giving it its unique charm.

Jason Benn – Overseas Player
Welcome back for a 2nd season to Jason as our overseas player.
Jason, from Guyana, comes from a cricketing family, learning the game
through his uncles and Carl Hooper, a neighbour, from a very young age.
Between the ages of 12 to 15 he stopped playing cricket to concentrate on
basketball, a decision he now regrets.
At 16 he joined George Town CC, playing Youth County Cricket, leading to
Youth trials for Guyana. In 2005 he became Captain of George Town,
winning the 3 day National Championship in 2006 and the National 40 over
League in 2007.
In 2006 he first came to England to play at Foxton CC, Cambridgeshire,
playing for 2 seasons and helping them win promotion in 2007. He then
came to Bexley last year and was a key player in the 1st XI’s push for
promotion back to the Kent Premier League.
He is very pleased to be back this season and is looking forward to a long,
hot summer, especially after playing little cricket during one of the wettest
summers on record in Guyana. He will be assisting with colt’s training and
enjoys talking the game with anyone of any age!
Colts’ News
It has been a mixed start to the colt’s season with all teams in action, despite a few showers. The
sight of parents sitting huddled in coats and blankets, peering into the gloom seems to be a regular
feature this time of year. Hopefully the promised “long, hot summer” will soon be with us.
Stanley Wells took another 6 wickets last Friday in an U16 Division 1match against Chislehurst &
West Kent, making a total of 12 in 2 games and currently has an average of 0.33.
Richie Barclay scored his first 100 in a friendly senior’s match against Old Brockleians on Bank
Holiday Monday. He has continued this form by top scoring for the 3rdXI on Saturday against Bickley
Park with 76.
Brothers Max and Henry Pickering made their mark in the 5ths with Max taking 4 wickets and Henry
2 wickets.
Remember your child’s Team Manager works hard to arrange matches and run them on the day.
Please offer to help with umpiring, scoring, drinks, putting covers back or collecting subs. It will give
the Managers time to warm the team up and talk to them after a match. Your support at matches is
invaluable.
Friday nights at the Club are Colts Nights. There is always a colt’s match on, along with training
sessions. With the bar open and the BBQ up and running, it is a great place to come and relax with
the family. The colt’s teams take it in turn to run the BBQ until the end of July and you will be asked
to offer your services for a couple of hours by your Team Manager. Profits from the BBQ help buy
equipment and improve facilities.
There is a colt’s notice board in the Clubhouse, please check for any colt’s news, match round ups
and team photos. All league results and statistics can be checked on the NKJL web site
www.nkentjunior.play-cricket.com.
Colt Profile
Adam Ball U16
Adam started in the colt’s section at the age of 9
and instantly made an impact. He progressed to
the Kent Young Cricketers at 11 and has been with
them ever since. He was selected for the South of
England squad at U14 and has captained the team
since. He is now also in the U16 England squad.
As an all rounder, Adam has been playing regularly
for Bexley 1 st XI since 2007 taking both wickets and
scoring many runs. Recently he has suffered from a
back injury preventing him from bowling last
season. He went to India in the close season where
he spent a lot of time working on his bowling
technique and is now back bowling for both Kent
Academy and Bexley.
Adam back in action at Manor Way
Adam is a committed club member and is well liked
and respected by all ages. We wish him further
success and look forward to watching his progress.
Finally
Electrical Work
Around £4,000 is being spent on updating the Club’s electrical wiring to cope with modern day demands,
including the installation of extra power points and low energy bulbs. Apologies for any disruption this
essential work may cause.
Volunteers
Bexley Cricket Club is run entirely by volunteers, as the club expands and paper work increases, so do the
demands on personnel. If you feel you can offer a few hours or have a trade or profession that could be
useful, please contact Chris Woolley on cdwoolley@hotmail.com or Lesley Griggs on
griggsys@btinternet.com. The Club needs help from administration to manning the bar or even fixing
the electronic ignition on the BBQ! YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU. Any help is greatly appreciated and makes a
big difference.
Photographs
Throughout the season we try and take as many photos as possible of games and events at the Club.
There is a photo album in the Clubhouse which is added to throughout the season. If you take any
photos you think would be of interest to others, please send them to Steve Griggs on
griggsys@btinternet.com and he will print copies for the album.
Remember – any news items, photos or suggestions are welcome and can be sent to Lesley
