are you reading?” The <strong>Miyan</strong> <strong>RZ</strong> said, “It is the book of Hadis.” The<br />
Imam AS said, “Leave the book of Hadis and engage (yourself) in<br />
zikr.” After some time (‘arsa), the Imam AS came into the hujra of<br />
the Shah <strong>RZ</strong> and asked, “Where is that book of Hadis which you were<br />
reading?” The Shah <strong>RZ</strong> said, “I kept it somewhere and have<br />
forgotten.” The Imam AS said, “Search it and bring it.” The Shah <strong>RZ</strong><br />
searched it and brought it. Then the Imam AS told <strong>Miyan</strong> Nizam <strong>RZ</strong> ,<br />
“Read this book; there is Allah’s objective in it also.”<br />
162. Prophet Esa AS has said, “I am not incapable reviving a dead<br />
person by the command of Allah, but I am incapable of making a<br />
foolish learned person comprehend (things).”<br />
163. An ‘alim (learned person) in Khorasan came in the august<br />
presence of Imam Mahdi AS and said, “Your companions do not<br />
know the commandments pertaining to prayers (namaz).” Imam<br />
Mahdi AS said, “What do I know! These people have grown such<br />
long beards and they do not know even this much? Ask them to<br />
learn by asking each other.” Then again some days later, the same<br />
‘alim told the Imam AS , “Your people do not know how to say their<br />
namaz.” The Imam AS said, “You try to say the namaz as these<br />
people say.”<br />
164. Once, Imam Mahdi AS said, “Necessary knowledge is needed,<br />
so that they know the practice of prayers and fasting (etc.) and<br />
perform their namaz correctly.”<br />
165. The Imam AS further said, “The luminosity of faith is enough<br />
to understand the meaning of Quran.”<br />
166. One day, Hazrat Miran Syed Mahmood <strong>RZ</strong> was holding a<br />
book in his hand. Imam Mahdi AS asked, “What is that book?” The<br />
Miran <strong>RZ</strong> said, “It is Tamheed.” The Imam AS said, “Try remembrance<br />
(zikr) so that a situation arises where you can understand it.”<br />
167. Bandagi <strong>Miyan</strong> Abu Bakr <strong>RZ</strong> and Bandagi <strong>Miyan</strong> Syed<br />
Salamullah <strong>RZ</strong> urged Hazrat Miran Syed Mahmood <strong>RZ</strong> to learn. The<br />
Miran <strong>RZ</strong> said, “I will seek permission from the Imam AS .” He asked<br />
the Imam AS about it. The latter said, “You do not go to their street.<br />

Be in the remembrance of Allah till your batin (immanence)<br />
opens.”<br />
168. Imam Mahdi AS saw a book in the hands of Hazrat <strong>Miyan</strong><br />
Nizam <strong>RZ</strong> and asked, “What is this?” The <strong>Miyan</strong> <strong>RZ</strong> said, “It is Anis-ul-<br />
Ghurba, Nuzhat-al-Arwah.” The Imam AS said, “Do not read it and<br />
engage yourself in the remembrance of Allah so that by His grace<br />
you achieve His Vision.”<br />
169. Some days later, Imam Mahdi AS again saw a book in the<br />
hands of Bandagi <strong>Miyan</strong> Nizam <strong>RZ</strong> and again he asked the <strong>Miyan</strong> <strong>RZ</strong><br />
not to read the book. After that, the <strong>Miyan</strong> <strong>RZ</strong> gave up the idea of<br />
reading. After a long time, the Imam AS asked, “<strong>Miyan</strong> Nizam!<br />
Which was that book?” The <strong>Miyan</strong> <strong>RZ</strong> said, “Anis-ul-Ghurba.” The<br />
Imam AS said, “Read it now. It is now compatible with your situation<br />
(hal).” After that, <strong>Miyan</strong> Nizam <strong>RZ</strong> used to read that book off and on.<br />
Again after a long time, the Imam AS asked him to learn ilm<br />
(knowledge).<br />
170. Imam Mahdi AS has said, “From the audience of the Lord of<br />
Esteem (Allah) nothing is bestowed except ilm-e-ladunni (divinely<br />
inspired knowledge), whether the person is a real ummi or spurious<br />
(that is, who has been made an unlettered person later). This servant<br />
(of Allah) has been made to forget whatever manifest knowledge he<br />
had (achieved) earlier. Then he was brought nearer the knowledge<br />
closest to Allah.”<br />
171. Imam Mahdi AS has said, “The breast of an ummi (unlettered<br />
person) is clean. Whatever he hears becomes inscribed on his heart,<br />
as Allah has said, “It is He Who has sent amongst the Unlettered an<br />
apostle from among themselves…” 62<br />
172. Hazrat Malik Maaroof <strong>RZ</strong> is narrated to have asked Bandagi<br />
<strong>Miyan</strong> Nizam <strong>RZ</strong> whether he knew some reading. The <strong>Miyan</strong> <strong>RZ</strong> said,<br />
“Just a little, some necessary ilm.” The Malik <strong>RZ</strong> said, “We will learn<br />
something after zikr.” The <strong>Miyan</strong> <strong>RZ</strong> said, “It is a good thing.” The<br />
Malik <strong>RZ</strong> said, “Whatever we do, we do with the permission of the<br />
