“The set of 2005s I tasted with negociant Michel Tardieu and his Oenologist, the Zelig-like Philippe Cambie, showed more<br />
restraint and elegance than I was expecting. ‘It was possible to make wines with both finesse and power in 2005, which is why<br />
it is such a fantastic vintage in the north as well as the south’, Tardieu told me. ‘In the south, the grenache achieved color like<br />
never before; the tannins are abundant and the wines have great concentration. It is essential to cellar them to allow their full<br />
potential to be expressed. ‘Tardieu’s fruit sources include many of the top growers and sites throughout the Rhone Valley.”<br />

A negociant rather than grower, he purchases the juice then ages the wine in small barriques. They are never<br />
racked, are kept on their lees with minimal SO2 additions, and then bottled with neither fining nor filtration.<br />

“Dominique Laurent has had Burgundy in a tizzy because of his brilliant, handcrafted, powerfuly rich and concentrated<br />
red Burgundies. Less known is Laurent’s involvement with former courtier, Michel Tardieu, in a Rhône<br />
Valley négociant operation. I have tasted only three vintages of Tardieu-Laurent (1995, 1996 and 1997), but tasting<br />
them is akin to tasting in some of the world’s greatest cellars. The wines are remarkable expressions of their appellations.<br />
Both of these men are brilliant winemakers, believing in natural winemaking, unfined/unfiltered wines, ripe<br />
fruit, and low yields. Their offerings represent the quintessential expression of their terroir, vintage, and varietal<br />
character. I predict that both Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent will have a profound influence on Burgundy<br />
