Under the new name, Erna Schein (Les Behrens’ mother’s name), the goal will be to produce more limited, but also more interesting cuvées. Beginning with the 2005s, all the wines will be released under the Erna Schein label, and production is unlikely to exceed 3,000 cases. As I have written many times, this is a fun place to visit…a hippy commune on top of Spring Mountain where everyone does what they want, and has a heck of a good time while they do it. From a wine critic’s perspective, the wines are wonderful. They are loaded with fruit and personality, much like the proprietors.” Wine Advocate 2004 Behren’s & Hitchcock kenefick Ranch Cuvee 2005 Erna Schein Cemetery LES BEHREnS, PRoPRiEToR & WinEMAkER The 10th vintage from the Kenefick Ranch is sadly their last, but perhaps the best ever. The nose has sweet and creamy black fruits, blueberry, and toasty oak. Ripe flavors surround a velvety and luscious mouthfeel, and a huge mid-palate of violet and chocolate carries to the lingering finish. 92-94 points from Robert Parker. The blend of 88% Cab Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 2% Cab. Franc creates a classic rich and fullbodied wine. 314 cases produced. A brooding wine of intense color and complexity, the 2005 Cemetery is nearly black. Earthy sage notes coupled with deeper scents of espresso, cocoa and cedar give life to the wine before it even hits your lips. All agreed that a near symphonic balance is achieved in this wine; you feel the bass of Mexican dark chocolate as you taste the higher-toned raspberry elements. The fruit nuances are balanced by more muscular flavors of tobacco and liqueur. The Cemetery truly makes for a complete wine that finishes with grace and length. Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, Sassicaia is aged for 22 months in Allier and Troncais oak.
