The Spectacular Wines
of Joh. Jos. Prûm
}
“Prüm has been the great name in the Mosel since the 16th century. Manfred Prüm
owns the finest of the family vineyards and his wines are legendary. He is openly secretive
and no one is allowed in the cellars. When asked what his secret is, he replies, ‘quite
simple - perfect grapes.’ Prüm has some of the best sites in Mosel (close to the river, where
the mist encourages botrytis), a dedicated, experienced team in the vineyards, and original
ungrafted vines over 100 years old that are trained so as to reduce the yield.
Fermentation is in stainless steel vats, almost always with indigenous yeast and the
wines are disturbed as little as possible to allow the natural carbon-dioxide to retain their
freshness. Sadly, today the general demand is for last year’s Rieslings, but it is criminal
to drink Prüm wines too soon. In 2003, the secondary aromas of his 1993 Wehlener
Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese were in full ascendancy; with purity and filigree elegance.
His wines have always captivated me, and the Wehlener Sonnenuhr lange Goldkapsel
Auslesen are quite simply to die for…” Decanter
Spectator
#35 Wine of the
Year 2006!
“The aroma is marked by matchstick now, but this is positively crunchy on the palate. The vibrant
structure and clarity set the tone for its peach, citrus and mineral notes. It’s refreshing and alive, with a
mouthwatering finish. This needs time. Best from 2009 through 2030. 1,200 cases made.” Wine
Spectator, rated 94/100
“Sedate aromas of blueberry, honey, apple and mint. Pure and rich on the palate, with subtle nut oil and
spice notes. Finishes with bright brown spices, succulent length and lovely lift and delicacy.” Steve
Tanzer, rated 91/100
“The wine bursts onto the palate with juicy fruit intensity, abundant spice, fruit skin pungency, and wet
slate and salty minerality, leading to a long, eloquently thirst-quenching and lip-smackingly intense finish
of apple, kiwi, black currant, flowers, and honey. This wine also exhibits a flattering, subtle sense of
oiliness of texture. Look for some short term gain in clarity and then - based on a long-standing track
record at this estate - two or more decades satisfying development in bottle.”
