The Languedoc-Roussillon area abounds with some of the greatest values in sweet and fortified sweet dessert wines in<br />
Europe. The most famous are those from Banyul (located on the coastline south of Perpignan) and Maury (located in<br />
the hillsides north of Perpignan). Both appellations require that these decadently rich, fortified wines be made from at<br />
least 50% Grenache. In the case of those wines entitled to the Banyul Grand Cru designation, they must be composed<br />
of at least 75% Grenache.<br />
The most famous of these wines are the great v from Dr. Parcé. They have a legendary reputation in France, but remain,<br />
to my surprise, largely unknown in the United States. Almost all of these wines can handle considerable aging and are<br />
remarkable for their value, particularly when compared with the soaring prices for vintage and tawny ports.<br />
