Syrah Suits Washington
“At its best, Washington Syrah displays the deep color, violet-laced perfume, and peppery palate of
Hermitage and Côtie-Rôtie, but with less tannin. Vivid, focused fruit is more common than overt
jammyness, perhaps owing to cold nights at the end of the growing season…It’s a long way from the
Rhône Valley to the Pacific Northwest, but Syrah is right at home in both places.” Saveur
Gramercy Cellars
Walla Walla, Washington
“…Clearly a label to follow.” Steve Tanzer
Gramercy’s viticultural and winemaking philosophies are very simple- to select the best
vineyards, harvest ripe, not over ripe grapes, intervene minimally in the winemaking process,
and don’t smother the wine with tons of new oak. They believe that too many wines
have excessive alcohol and new oak, are overly fruity and taste like they could be from
anywhere. They created Gramercy Cellars to make different wines that display balance,
fruit and earthiness, and minimal new oak flavors. Their wines may require time to
develop and open, but will reward patience. This is their passion. At Gramercy Cellars,
they seek to produce wines that will complement food, provide great pleasure and stand
out as uniquely as Washington.
2005 Syrah Walla Walla ___________________________ 39.99
278 cases produced
“Our inaugural Walla Walla Valley Syrah. Damn we love this wine. The grapes were
destemmed, fermented in small, open top fermenters for 7-12 days, lightly pressed, allowed
to settle and placed in French Oak barrels, with 15% new. The wine was aged for 18
months leaving just a kiss of oak. This wine displays smoked meat, black olive and licorice
flavors and elegant black fruits. The wine shows balanced acidity with intense richness and
just a touch of vanilla spice. Exactly what we wanted to make in Washington!” Greg
Harrington MS, proprietor & winemaker
2005 Syrah “Lagniappe” Columbia Valley _________________ 29.99
485 cases produced
“Our inaugural Lagniappe Syrah. In New Orleans, Lagniappe means a ‘a little something
extra.’ We feel both the wine and the vineyards are a gift to us. The grapes were partiallly
destemmed (it’s all about the whole cluster), co-fermented with Viognier in small, open top
fermenters for 7-12 days, lightly pressed, allowed to settle and placed in neutral French
Oak. The wine was aged for 18 months.
This wine displays an amazingly floral nose with hints of orange rind. Flavors of liquid
stone and gravel, with smoked meat and red and black fruits. This wine is all about balance
with fantastic acidity and intense fruit and earth flavors. This is a food wine, not for sipping
on the porch!” Greg Harrington MS, proprietor & winemaker
