President Toomas Hendrik Ilves külas Virve Kösteril Kihnus. Ants Liiguse foto.
Dear guests of the XXII Pärnu Film Festival,
It is my great pleasure to welcome one of the oldest culture
festivals in Estonia, called to life by President Lennart Meri.
The small range gathering of film makers and scientists
has grown into an international film festival where survival
of languages and cultures of indigenous peoples is the most
important part. Here I would like to remember what Lennart
Meri has said – there are no small peoples or small cultures –
everyone has a right to live under the sun.
To preserve cultural diversity, it is important to take care
that the smallest piece of a nation could keep its language,
traditions and beliefs alive. You, the film makers and cultural
anthropologists, can give a helping hand with your creation.
Good luck in your respectful work!
Toomas Hendrik Ilves
President of the Republic of Estonia
Head XXII Pärnu Filmifestivali külalised!
Mul on heameel tervitada tänase Eesti üht vanimat
kultuurifestivali, mille algatajaks oli president Lennart Meri.
Väikesest erialainimeste - filmiloojate ja teadlaste - kohtumisest
on välja kasvanud rahvusvaheline filmifestival, kus erilise
tähelepanu all on põlisrahvaste keelte ning kultuuride ellujäämine.
Siinkohal on paslik meenutada Lennart Meri mõttekäiku, et pole
väikeseid rahvaid ega väikeseid kultuure – kõigil on õigus elule
meie ühise päikese all.
Toomas Hendrik Ilves
Vabariigi President
Dear Guests of Pärnu Film Festival,
Dear Cineastes,
Film art is the reality which can give rise to an argument. It
is experienced in various ways, as a result of different angles of
views, because this form of art has been created by humans.
The film maker also works according to his or her experiences,
positions of mind, points of view, evaluations, emotions and
feelings. The film maker is influenced by the surrounding
environment together with its information and has to make
the appropriate selection of it for him- or herself and for the
viewer.
The viewer will only see the part of the whole that the film
maker has selected. The rest of the whole has jet to be created
by the viewer’s imagination. The more vivid the imagination,
the better the film.
I hope all the films screened in Pärnu Film Festival will fire
up your imagination and offer unforgettable moments.
“I believe in the eternal importance of the home as the
fundamental institution of society. I believe in the immeasurable
possibilities of every boy and girl. I believe in the imagination,
the trust, the hopes and ideals which dwell in the hearts of all
children. I believe in the beauty of nature, of art, of books, and
of friendship. I believe in the satisfactions of duty. I believe in
the little homely joys of everyday life…”
I think these golden words written by Ozora Davis describe
Pärnu Film Festival so well.
For the twenty second time the documentaries, sincere and
straight from life, offer all the cineastes of the festival new
knowledge and joyful recognition of the scenes of reality. And
it is all thanks to the fanatic management of Mark Soosaar.
I wish you all touching experiences!
I hope to meet you during the culture-summer in Pärnu!
Jane Mets,
Vice Mayor of Pärnu
Laine Jänes,
Minister of Culture of Estonian Republic
Head filmisõbrad!
Filmikunst on tegelikkus, mille üle saab vaielda.
sobiliku valiku.
Vaataja näeb ainult seda osa tervikust, mille filmitegija talle
vaatamiseks on valinud. Ülejäänud terviku loob ta ise enda peas
kujutlusvõime abiga. Mida elavamalt tema kujutlusvõime tööle
hakkab, seda parem on film.
Loodan, et kõik Pärnu Filmifestivalil linastuvad filmid
käivitavad teie kujutlusvõime ja pakuvad unustamatuid hetki.
Laine Jänes,
EV kultuuriminister
Head Pärnu filmifestivali külalised!
„Mina usun kodu kui ühiskonna põhiinstitutsiooni
igavesti kestvasse tähtsusse. Mina usun iga poisi ja tüdruku
mõõtmatutesse võimalustesse. Mina usun kujutlusvõimesse,
usaldusse, lootustesse ja ideaalidesse, mis elavad kõikide
laste südameis. Mina usun looduse ja kunsti, raamatute ja
sõpruse ilusse. Mina usun igapäevase elu väikestesse lihtsatesse
rõõmudesse.“
Need kuldsed sõnad, kirja pandud Ozora Davise poolt,
tunduvad olema nii õiged kirjeldamaks Pärnu Filmifestivali.
Juba kahekümne teist korda pakuvad siirad filmid elust enesest
sel festivalil kõigile huvilistele uusi teadmisi ja äratundmisrõõmu.
Ja ikka Mark Soosaare fanaatilisel organiseerimisel.
Tundlikke filmielamusi kõigile!
Kohtumiseni Pärnu kirjus kultuurisuves!
Pealik kõneleb:
President hoiab hellalt kihnu lauluema Järsumäe Virve kätt,
tantsupaari taga keerlevate noorte silmis peegeldub soe sära.
Mõni päev hiljem marsib Eesti Vabariigi president välja Siberis
toimuvalt rahvusvaheliselt kongressilt, kus solvatakse meie õigust
Kalifornia kinnisvarafirmale. Esmakordselt on meie festivali
kavas teema “Inimene ja muutuv loodus”. Vaatame, kuidas
XXII Pärnu filmifestivali seitse tugitoolifilmi ehk ETV-s
linastuvad võistlustööd on seekord teemal “Lapsed ja nende
vanemad”. Usume, et mitte üksnes paljude riikide põhiseadustesse
kirjutatud säte, mille järgi vanemad on kohustatud kasvatama
elukorraldusega aitavad kaasa peresuhete hoidmisele. On ju
see saab näha festivali valikkava Haapsalus, Rakveres, Viljandis,
Heimtalis, Otepääl, Põlvas või Manijal.
Nautige siis hetki meiega!
Mark Soosaar,
festivali pealik
The chief is speaking:
The President is holding tenderly the hand of Järsumäe Virve,
the legendary songmaker from Kihnu Island...
A few days later he walks out on the international congress
in Siberia where the Estonians’ right to build up their own state,
to protect their language and culture is offended...
These two episodes assure the feeling that we are one nation
and that President Toomas Hendrik Ilves can act upstandingly
when necessary. At the same time we, Estonians, do not forget
that even the smallest nations have the rights to their own space
for living.
The screenwork to be shown at Pärnu Film Festival cry for
the rights of the ancient Tibetian culture which is harrassed by
the great power of China as well as the old oak tree which is
standing in the way of a real estate company in California.
For the first time our festival program contains the theme
Man and Changing Nature. Let’s see, how the very rare
orangoutangs can be helped to continue their existence and is
the mankind ready for the rise of the world seas? Is man clever
enough to maintain the Mother Earth for ever?
The seven films on air of the Estonian TV speak about the
values of family as a little model of society. If relationships in
the family are harmonious, there is hope of having the same
kind of relations in the society. The most touching film will
come up in the night of July 12th when the TV audience votes
for favourites on the phone number 1182. And the President
of the Estonian Parliament Ene Ergma will lay the Estonian
People’s award - a nice blanket over the winner’s shoulders.
To meet the film makers in person and to see all the program,
one should come to Pärnu. A part of it will be also shown in
Haapsalu, Rakvere, Viljandi, Heimtali, Otepää and Manija.
Enjoy the time with us!
Mark Soosaar,
the Chief of Pärnu Film Festival.
President of Estonian Parliament Ene Ergma:
Art and science may discover together
Mark Soosaar: It is generally known that art speaks in the
language of images and metaphors, science in the language of
definitions. You are a scientist, me maybe an artist. What do
you think, is it possible to make a film where definitions and
metaphors meet, where science and art co-operate?
Ene Ergma: Yes, I believe they can co-operate. For me, art and
science are the two faces of one medal. It is interesting that on
the border areas there evolves a totally different vision. Usually,
the holders of a certain field have quite a conservative way of
thinking. They want to keep their area clean. In science it is well
known that the interdisciplinary fields are the most successful
ones. There is a lot of new. I like the people who can acquire a
new look watching the world. I believe that art and science can
discover things together.
MS: Documentary film makers sometimes believe that they
are the cleverest, so they have to put their knowledge into
other people’s heads. In your opinion, how educative should a
documentary be ?
EE: I do not like to be mistaken for some kind of a bowl into
which something could be put and I should swallow it all. I like
different kinds of films. I think documentaries should make
people think. That is much better than the way of giving the
audience some ready made truths. I evaluate the films which I
can remember for long years, maybe even for tens of years. For
instance, the film Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa. Whenever I
recall that film, I think of our recent past. How everyone sees the
6
past with his or her own eyes. How everyone of us looks back
upon the nineties, the story of Estonia becoming independent!
You were also in the movement of the creative societies – for
example, how do you see that time and how do many others
remember it now? Mart Laar, Edgar Savisaar, Marju Lauristin
remember it differently. It is a large complex of different images
and truths. Just like one story described in Rashomon through
different people.
MS: Everyone has his or her own truth and of all those different
truths a great truth is formed!
EE: Yes, everyone has his or her own truth and a right to keep
it. And later, historians and the next generations find their truths
of the past. The one that suits them best!
MS: Does it mean that a documentary film maker should not
force his or her truth on the others, that the film maker should
be an urgent collector of the truths of the other people?
EE: Yes, it seems to be the best way. But still, the result depends
on the choices of the author. For instance, the famous film To
Be and to Have. What does it show? I was very surprised to
see France so different. No glittering Paris, no glamour, only a
village school. It was so unexpected, so fantastic.
MS: That is the film by Nicolas Philibert about a small village
school. To Be and to Have got the Estonian People’s Award in
2003. The film does not teach anybody, it follows life in a school
where there are only 14 children and the adamant teacher makes

great efforts to educate them. There’s room enough for the
audience to fit in the action, to identify. I think this film has the
same place in the French film history as our The Spring (Kevade)
by Oskar Luts and Arvo Kruusement. The work enables to move
back in the imaginary space, to become a little child again and
to go to a kind of school, of which very few are left.
EE: Yes, and especially I like those active boys who are the main
characters in both films. Toots or Jojo who are very energetic.
With too much energy. And luckily, in both films there is a clever
teacher who can see that energy. In The Spring there are two
antipodes – Toots and Tali. But the teacher can find a way with
both boys. This is the genius of teacher Laur. The present day
schools need very badly such young men as Laur. Just like the
schools of France need that kind of a strong and very patient
teacher as in the film of Philibert.
MS: What do you wish the guests of XXII Pärnu Film
Festival?
EE: I have been to Pärnu Film Festival for several years now
and it has been very interesting. Every festival is new and
different from the previous ones. I wish the guests to have
exciting films to watch and new discoveries to the film makers.
Well, it is a very ordinary wish but the main thing is – to keep
going! In three years the festival will be of age of a quarter of
a century. For Pärnu it is something very special in the peak of
summertime!
Good luck!
Riigikogu esimees Ene Ergma:
teadus ja kunst võivad koos avastada
Mark Soosaar: Üldteada on, et kunst kõneleb kujundite, teadus
mõistete keeles. Sina oled teadlane, mina võib-olla kunstnik. Kas
Sinu meelest on võimalik film, kus mõisted ja kujundid saavad
kokku, kus teadus ja kunst koostööd teevad?
Ene Ergma: Usun, et võiksid küll koostööd teha. Minu jaoks
on teadus ja kunst ühe medali kaks külge. Huvitav, et piirimail
sünnib hoopis teistsugune nägemine. Tavaliselt ühe kindla ala
hoidjad on üsna konservatiivse mõttelaadiga. Tahetakse oma
valdkonna puhtust hoida. Teaduses on tuntud tõsiasi, et just
interdistsiplinaarsed alad on kõige edukamad. Seal on palju uut.
Mulle meeldivad teistsugused filmid. Minu meelest dokfilmid
peaks panema inimesi mõtlema. See on palju parem, kui et
sulle antakse mingid valmis tõed kätte.Hindan neid filme, mida
mäletan pikki aastaid, võib-olla isegi aastakümneid. Näiteks Akira
Kurosawa „Rashomon”. Kui see film mulle meenub, siis mõtlen
meie lähiajaloole. Kuidas igaüks näeb toimunut oma silmadega.
Kuidas me igaüks näeme oma silmadega üheksakümnendaid
aastaid, Eesti vabanemise lugu!
Sa olid loomeliitude liikumises, näiteks kuidas sina näed toda
aega ja kuidas paljud seda täna mäletavad? Erinevalt mäletavad
ju Mart Laar, Edgar Savisaar, Marju Lauristin. See on üks suur
erinevate nägemuste ja tõdemuste kogum. Nii nagu „Rashomoni”
filmis üks lugu on jutustatud läbi erinevate nägemuste, erinevate
prismade.
Näiteks too kuulus film „Olla
ja omada”. Mida ikkagi näidata? Olin lausa üllatunud nähes nii
harjumatut Prantsusmaad. Ei säravat Pariisi, ei glamuuri, on vaid
väike külakool. See oli nii ootamatu, nii fantastiline.
MS: See on Nicolas Philibert’i film väikesest külakoolist. „Olla
14 last ja visa õpetaja näeb suurt vaeva lastele elementaarsete
teadmiste edasiandmisel. Filmis on piisavalt ruumi, et vaataja
saaks end tegevuse sisse paigutada, toimuvale kaasa elada,
end lastega samastada. Minu meelest on sel filmil prantsuse
kinoajaloos sama koht mis meil Oskar Lutsu-Arvo Kruusemendi
„Kevadel”. See teos võimaldab liikuda tagasi imaginaarses ajas
mõlemas teoses esiplaanil on.
See näitab õpetaja Lauri
geniaalsust. Õpetaja Lauri suguseid noori mehi oleks väga vaja
meie tänastesse koolidesse. Samuti kui toda visa ja kannatlikku
õpetajat Philibert’i filmist prantsuse koolidesse.
MS: Mida soovid XXII Pärnu Filmifestivali külalistele?
EE: Olen Pärnu festivalil juba mitmeid aastaid järjest käinud
ja see on mulle väga huvitav. Iga festival on uus ja eelmisest
erinev. Soovin külalistele head vaatamist ning filmiloojatele uusi
avastusi. See on küll standardsoov, kuid mis peamine – pidage
vastu! Kolme aasta pärast on festival juba veerandsaja aasta
vanune. Südasuvise Pärnu jaoks on teie festival midagi väga
head ja erilist!
Edu teile!
Mulberry Bush is not an average school. It costs £113,000 a year and is highly selective. But you
don’t get there by being super rich. Each child is carefully chosen and paid for by local education
authorities hard strapped even to buy enough books for their normal classrooms. They pay for
these children for one reason only: they have no idea what else to do with them. The Mullberry
Bush School is where kids go when they can’t go anywhere else. Children whose behavioural and
emotional problems are so extreme other schools, their parents and care homes have rejected
them. This film explores the remarkable relationships which are formed between the staff and
children. We are drawn into the arduous and emotionally charged process of trying to break
the kids’ violent and self-destructive patterns of behaviour.
Inglismaal Mulberry Bush’is asuv kool on ebatavaline. Õppimine selles haridusasutuses on eriti
kallis. Ent samas pole tegemist kooliga, kus käivad vaid rikkurite lapsed.
Isegi nende
lihased vanemad on neist ära pöördunud. Õpetajad ning kasvatajad püüavad olla lastele uuteks
vanemateks.
MARCELA
82 min. 2006 Czech Republic
The life of Marcela, an ordinary Czech woman is explored throughout several decades of her
life. The documentary observes several important societal issues. We are engaged to struggle
and fight back with Marcela as her tragic life unfolds before our eyes especially dealing with her
daughter’s unexpected death which almost drives her to suicide. However, the responsibility she
feels for her retarded son gives her the will to survive. The making of Marcela was initially part
of a six-part series on Czech television about the fate of six married couples but the events
that happened throughout Marcela’s life arose a wave of solidarity from the Czech public who
sent her money and personal support. This was the reason why Helena Třeštíková decided to
focus solely on a documentary about Marcela. The distressing destiny of Marcela’s life and the
act of human support from the Czech public was therefore, worthy to be expressed in this
film. She is currently looking forward for a better future.
MARCELA
Autor Helena Trestikova
teemaks. Sarja arenedes hakkas filmilooja suurema innuga jälgima Marcela elu. Marcela järgnevad
aastad olid täis rõõmu ning kannatusi. Noor naine sünnitas peagi tütre. Siis jättis mees Marcela
maha, tuli tagasi ning lahkus lõplikult. Marcela kasvatas tütre üksinda üles. Ühel traagilisel õhtul
aga tütar töölt tulles koju ei jõudnud.
Marcela näeb välja palju vanem kui teised temaealised tšehhi naised. Marcela peab elama edasi
ühiskonnas, kus raha räägib kõvema häälega kui inimlikud väärtused.
CONFLUENCES - EMERILLON OF FRENCH GUIANA
78 min. 2007 Denmark/France (filmed in French Guiana- Amazonas)
Like forceful omens, scientific reports have hitherto depicted the Amerindian Emerillon as
cultureless and doomed to disappear.
With this film, an anthropologist proposes to defy these negative images, by the same token
delving into their world. Several young Emerillon take up the challenge, and through their
resourceful and often stumbling efforts to maintain a life in the forest while profiting from their
status as French citizens, they present another version of what being Emerillon is about.
There emerges a rare, profoundly generous and non-ethnocentric discourse, one that asserts
that to feel yourself as Emerillon does not necessarily imply feeling fundamentally different
from others.
KOKKUPUUTEPUNKTID
Autor Perle Møhl
Teaduslikud uuringud ennustavad Lõuna-Ameerika indiaanlaste - emerillonite - kui kultuuritu
rahva peatset väljasuremist. Üks antropoloog aga püüab väita vastupidist. Olla ja tunda end
emerillonina Counani vabariigis (endises Prantsuse Guianas) ei tähenda tingimata fundamentaalset
erinevust muust maailmast nagu ilmneb filmis kõlavatest arutlustest.
The film is an intimate portrait of a rare and exceptional spiritual community and the women
who built it up. For centuries, monasteries have served as spiritual and educational centers for
rural areas of Tibet where subsistence farmers and nomadic yak herders engaged in the daily
struggle survive. Mostly, monastic life has only been available to men, as it is generally believed
that educating a woman is a waste of valuable resources. But Kala Rongo Monastery, in remote
unprecedented role in preserving their rich cultural heritage even as they slowly reshape it.
I WAS A WHITE AFRICAN - L’ADIEU A JEAN ROUCH
Three years after the tragic death of legendary French film maker Jean Rouch the Dogons have
decided to arrange a symbolic remembrance ceremony to send the soul of the great friend into
the other world. As the Dogons let Jean Rouch film their most secret rites the film maker had
KEEP THE DANCE ALIVE
75 min. 2007 France (filmed in Namibia and Angola)
A unique voyage through the music, dance and spirit possession practices of the Ovahimba
people of north-western Namibia and south-western Angola, Keep the Dance Alive features
remarkable footage of how dance and spirit possession is integrated into everyday life from
infancy to death. The documentary presents a singular vision of the Ovahimba people, that of
director Rina Sherman who filmed the lives of an Ovahimba family for seven years. She focuses
on how singing, rhythm and voice work together with dance and spirit possession to compose
a complete imaginary universe and a dense and complex social structure.
Keep the Dance Alive is part of The Ovahimba Years, a long-term multi-disciplinary
ethnographic study of the Ovahimba and other Otjiherero-language-speaking peoples of
LAST YOIK IN SAAMI FORESTS?
59 min. 2007 Finland (filmed in Finland and Norway)
The documentary chronicles the logging damage that has taken place in the forests of Finnish
Lapland over the past 50 years. Home to the indigenous Saami peoples, these forests are essential
to Saami reindeer herding, a traditional way of life that the Saami hope to continue into future
generations. Population growth in Finland has created economic pressure – prompting migration
to the Saami lands in the North. The resulting forest cutting severely depletes the lichen necessary
for free reindeer grazing, and logging infrastructure disrupts the entire forest ecosystem.
The film shows a state-owned logging company Metsahallitus in the exploitation of Saami
resources, and shows that the Finnish government has done little to preserve this natural resource.
The issue of indigenous land rights is the heart of the problem, and till the completion of this
film in 2007, it remains unresolved.
Mambo’s kingdom, Mbuya Gondo, an over 70-years-old woman, is a spiritual medium. She
The history of an indigenous princess kidnapped by an anaconda is the point of item(game) of
this documentary that explores the myth and Maria Lionza’s worship, always in transformation
from the colonial times.
The documentary raises the multiple facets of the myth and of the worship, without obviating
any of these in spite of the fact that differences could arise, up to contradictions in the beliefs.
The absence of dogma and universal creed to the worship, they constitute the essence of this
magic – religious universe.
The peregrinate of a group of believers of different environments to Sorte’s mountain, Maria
Lionza’s kingdom, offers to know personal histories, motivations and vision of the spiritual
phenomenon, humanizing and personalizing the devotion to the goddess. The summation of the
peregrinate up to the top of the mountain, our history, the pilgrims as well as the investigation on
the iconography of the myth and of the worship, brings us nearer to an eclectic and permeable
Maria Lionza who has managed to survive and to adapt for more of 500 years, symbolizing the
spirit of the deepest and why not, genuine Venezuela.
MARIA LIONZA, ORHIDEEDE HINGUS
rahva usust imedesse.
OAK #419
40 min. 2006 USA/Germany
Oak #419 is about the protest movement led by John Quigley, who spent 71 days living in a 400
year old oak tree in Los Angeles County, to try to save it from being cut down for a new highway.
The roadway is to lead to the next projected 20,000 housing unit development. The movement
became much bigger than just this tree, receiving great media attention, and drawing a very
diverse crowd: reporters and camera people, people in frog suits, Latino immigrants, Filippino
immigrants, cheerleaders, Native Americans and even Santa Claus. Political folk musician Fred
Starner, who participated in the protest, made the music for the film. The film is about someone
having the courage to stand up for what he believes in, and about trying to reclaim democracy
in today’s divided, neoconservative America. The tree became the “proverbial line in the sand”
between nature, and the voracious urban sprawl of L.A. Can one weigh the value of nature
against real estate development? What is “progress”?
NEW ESTONIAN DOCUMENTARIES
UUED EESTI DOKID
ALYOSHA
67 min. ESTONIA
Most monuments erected during the Soviet regime were taken away after Estonia regained its
independence in 1991. The Bronze Soldier Alyosha, located in the center of Tallinn, remained
in its place.
For Estonians this monument was a symbol of Soviet occupation and marked the beginning
of Stalinist repressions.
However, for many Russians the monument was one of the few remaining symbols connecting
them to Russia and Russian identity.
Documentary Alyosha shows us the people who gathered to the Bronze Soldier in 2005-2007
and whose behaviour created a new line in our cultural memory. What mattered were the rituals
around the monument, not the monument itself. Different dispositions about the history brought
to the tragic conflicts in the streets and caused the removal of the monument.
ALJOšA
Autor Meelis Muhu
HEADWIND HALL
57 min. 2007 Estonia (filmed in Estonia and Spain)
The Estonian conductor Tõnu Kaljuste wants to build an opera house called Nargen Opera
on Naissaar, an island where a closed Soviet military base was located. There does not exist
any regular ferry line between the island and mainland nor electricity. Naissaar has only one
permanent inhabitant...
In spite of the unsuitable situations, Tõnu Kaljuste carries construction materials to the island
The title Headwind Hall refers to an idea of inventor Schmidt, whose land Kaljuste bought
headwind in order to move ahead with a double power.
Finally, in summer 2006 Nargen Opera is completed and ready for the premiere.
The joyful film follows activities of Tõnu Kaljuste during five years.
Autor Priit Valkna
THE SOUND OF CONDUCTOR
70 min. 2007 Estonia (Filmed in Estonia, Finland, Russia)
Maestro Eri Klas could be introduced with the words of Luigi Pirandello: “I introduce myself the
way that matches with the relationship I wish to create with you.” The film is about internationally
recognised Estonian conductor Eri Klas.
If a person is born the same year the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact is signed, his child memory
begins in the rear of Soviet Russia and his best years pass in the worst period of red terror, there
is no hope of having an easy fate. The parents of Eri Klas came from Poland and Germany
and they shared their fate with Estonia. In 1941 the family was torn between the frontline. Eri
was with his mother who was the whole family for him.
The film by Helle Karis and Peter Murdmaa does not tell about the conductor’s road to success.
The film watches the maestro in the episodes of life where he has hidden his tail coat in the
closet and is feeling well without all the important things.
DIRIGENDI KÕLA
Autorid Helle Karis ja Peter Murdmaa
Maestro Eri Klasi sobib esitleda kuulsa kirjaniku Luigi Pirandello sõnadega: “Ma tutvustan end
teile nagu on kohane suhtele, mida soovin teiega luua.” Film on rahvusvaheliselt tunnustatud
dirigendist Eri Klasist.
1941. aastal käristati Eri perekond laiali kahele poole
rindejoont. Eri jäi klaverikunstnikust emaga, kes asendas pojale kogu perekonda.
Helle Karise ja Peter Murdmaa film pole dirigendi kuulsuseteest. Film vaatleb Eri Klasi neis
eluepisoodides, kus maestro on fraki kappi peitnud ja tunneb end hästi tähtsaid asju ajamata.

RETROKAVA -
CHIEF CONDUCTOR
30 min, 1989 (Filmed in Estonia and in Moscow)
Directed and photographed by Mati Põldre
Produced by Eesti Telefilm
ETV, Tallinn
Mati Põldre was allowed to make the documentary of his old friend Eri Klas for the conductor’s
50th anniversary. At that time he was not as internationally recognised as he is now.
The film maker says he admired everything about Eri Klas – his relationship with his mother,
his children and grandchildren, his knowledge of foreign languages...
Eri grew together with his nation. And at one time the nation even planned to elect him the
president of Estonia...
PEADIRIGENT
Aasta hiljem see võimalus tuli.
Eesti Telefilm lubas mul teha filmi Erist tema viiekümnendaks sünnipäevaks.
Film sai nimeks PEADIRIGENT.
TO COME, TO PASS AWAY...
32 min. 1999 Estonia (filmed in USA, Finland, Belgium, Estonia)
A documentary about Estonian conductor Eri Klas and his mother, the pianist Anna Klas.
33 minutes of beautiful music and a touching relationship between the mother and the son.
Directed and recorded by Mark Soosaar
Shot in Hollywood, Savonlinna, Antverpen, Tõrva and Tallinn. The basic elements for the film
are water and air, the symbols of life and spirit.
The film includes excerpts from the 9th Symphony by L. van Beethoven, 1812 by P. Tchaikovski,
Porgy and Bess by G. Gershwin, Cavalleria Rusticana by P. Mascagni, Paillasse by R. Leoncavallo,
Per Gynt by E. Grieg.
TULLA, ET MINNA...
Autor Mark Soosaar
Muusikaline dokumentaalfilm Eri Klasist ja tema emast Anna Klasist. 33 minutit ilusat muusikat
Filmis on haruldasi võtteid dirigent Eri Klasi loomingulistest intiimhetkedest, jäädvustusi keset
etendusekeerist Savonlinna ooperilaval, ärevaid hetki Hollywood Bowl’i hiigelkontserdilt.
Kõlavad katkendid Beethoveni IX Sümfooniast, P. Tšaikovski avamängust “1812”, E. Griegi
süidist “Peer Gynt” ning P. Mascagni ooperist “Talupoja au”, R. Leoncavallo ooperist “Pajatsid”
ning G. Gershwini ooperist “Porgy ja Bess”.
Hoolimata paljudest erinevatest kohustustest leiab Ada aega kunstiga tegelemiseks.
wichide tunnustatud juht Francisco Perez. Nad mõlemad teavad, et wichide ellujäämine sõltub
maaomandist. Teoreetiliselt ehk vastavalt rahvusvahelistele kokkulepetele on indiaanlastel täielik
AUROVILLE, THE CITY THE EARTH NEEDS
57 min. 2007 France (filmed in India)
Always, men dream of building a better world, to be free from racism, religion, policy, pollution,
and especially from money. But are there still men who believe in this impossible dream?
The answer is in Auroville, in the South-east of India. Men and women came there from the
whole world at the end of the sixties, to do this experiment.
Today they are 1800 Aurovilians, of 40 different nationalities, who hope for the unthinkable.
Today’s utopia is the reality of tomorrow.
Artists born between 1967 and 1976, working in their hometown Reykjavík and abroad share
the diverse processes that spark their work of art, with the viewers.
They like to use all kinds of stuff from empty bottles to human body. Threading a line between
realism and performance, the film explores inspiration and creativity through intimate two-year
collaboration with seven artists, providing an insight into a booming scene.
Among the interviewees, involved in or familiar with the Icelandic art scene are the curators
Hans Ulrich Obrist and Gregory Volk, the musician Bjork, and the artist Roni Horn.
The title, STEYPA (Concrete), is borrowed from the artworks by one of the participating artists.
It literally means “concrete” and is Ásmundur’s favorite sculpture material but it is also a word
used in Icelandic for weird stuff or jargon.
DANCE YOUR LIFE
54 min. 2007 Israel
Sensuous dancing and rhythmic music characterize the ‘Salsa craze’ that has engulfed the
world – and Israel. Super-photogenic, the Salsa scene accepts all. But its fluffy veneer aside,
Salsa also satisfies much more basic human needs, drawing people from all walks of life, who
find a common denominator in the music. The film follows three dancers, all preparing for the
International Salsa Congress in Eilat: Eli, a former Orthodox Jew, has to deal with his family.
Maya, who has broken up with her husband, has to juggle being a single mother and her work.
Yoni, a new immigrant from France, has to deal with the hardships of assimilation, leaning
on his wife-to-be, Shahaf. We’re all looking for love, recognition and a way to deal with life –
wouldn’t you try out something that promised you all that?
SINU ELU TANTS
Autor Sandy Raischer
END OF RAINBOW
83 min. 2007 France/Australia (filmed in Guinea and Indonesia)
In a remote region of Guinea, West Africa, a desperately poor place with a long connection
to gold, a large industrial mine has arrived. End of the Rainbow is an elegiac portrait of the
changes brought by the mine, and of the universal human desire for a better life. How do local
people respond to the opportunities and economic divisions the mine creates? How do the local
jobseekers and expatriate staff, attracted by gold and the possibilities it offers, understand one
another? In case of difficulties, the mine calls in the military. Conflict over the mine’s presence
who are grappling to respond to those changes.
Fate of the Lhapa is a feature-length documentary about the last three Tibetan shamans living
in a Tibetan refugee camp in Nepal. Each Lhapa requested that their story be filmed. Their
fear was that the next heir might not appear until after their own deaths. Subsequently, with no
Lhapa alive to mentor the children, the documentary would be used to transmit the knowledge
cosmologies of disease and treatments, and of their flight from Tibet during the Chinese
occupation in the late 1950s is be juxtaposed with images of present-day life in the camp, current
THE GIRLS FROM BRAZIL
87 min. 2007 Israel
During the 80’s, with an acute shortage of children for adoption in Israel, hope arose for those
seeking to have a child in the form of Brazil. Approximately 3,000 Israeli families flew to the
carnival country to adopt a child. German and Italian families were also part of this adoption
wave. In the meantime, the children, now grown-up, are travelling to their land of origin to look
for the woman who gave birth to them. Filmmaker, Nili Tal follows four young Israeli women
on such a voyage. This is a moving trip to a country, where women have four or five children
from several men and another one somewhere in a faraway place. It is also a personal voyage
into each of the protagonists’ life bringing up issues concerning us all.
BRASIILIA TÜDRUKUD
Autor Nili Tal
emasid. Nimelt kaheksakümnendatel aastatel käis Brasiilia karnevalidel üle 3000 iisraeli
perekonna, kelle salamõtteks oli leida siit endale kasulaps. Ka saksa ja itaalia perekonnad käisid
karnevalimaal sama mõttega.
Nili Tal ja neli Brasiiliast pärit noort naist avastavad oma otsingureisil maa, kus naistel on neliviis
GOD IS AMERICAN
Since the end of World War II, the people of Tanna, a remote island in the South Pacific in the
believe he is an American pilot that returned to the United States after the war, and will come
son. He has formed an army of GI’s to celebrate the return of the prophet John Frum.
JUMAL ON AMEERIKLANE
Autor Richard Martin Jordan
Vanuatu saarestikusasub Tanna saar. Siinsed põliselanikud usuvad, et jumal on ameeriklane.
Isegi tinglik nimi on talle antud - John Frum. Arvamus põhineb II Maailmasõja päevilt, mil
saarlased puutusid kokku taevast alla astunud ameerika piloodiga. Kuna ebajumal lendas
John Frumi’i lihane poeg…
THE IVY STILL MOURNS
After a turbulent life as an artist, Leon van der Heijden and his wife Willemijn – he as a
gardener/painter, she as his girl Friday and muse – withdrew to the age-old cemetery known
as Huis te Vraag.
This cemetery lies hidden to the passer-by close to Amsterdam’s office park on the city’s south
ring. There have not been any burials here since 1962; the cemetery however still functions as
a park and place of tranquillity.
Under constant pressure from the hustle and bustle, project developers and encroaching
new neighbourhoods, Leon and Willemijn have spent the last 20 years of their lives creating,
maintaining and preserving a paradise on earth. Leon often records the beauty of this spot –
cemetery and meadow – on canvas and he also writes books about it.
In the film we become acquainted with two idiosyncratic individuals, bound together in
remarkable marriage, in a beautiful and in changing place. A place where living and working,
living and dying and being buried all come together in their own unique way.
Scratch band music, also known as Quelbe, is an indigenous, grass-roots form of folk music that
originated in the U.S. Virgin Islands over a century ago. The lyrics are a form of oral history used
to immortalize significant historical events, spread “rude” gossip about one’s neighbours, and
relay the day-to-day trials and tribulations of living on a small Caribbean island. Playing with
some homemade instruments made from tin cans and gourds, the music has a crudeness to it
that is intoxicating and rhythmic speaking to both the beauty and the hardship of the Crucian
THE KEYS TO PARADISE
49 min. 2007 Italy
Of all the places where I could have been born, why did it happen in Sant’Omero?
Was it necessary to be female without baptism in such a religious place?
The film is an unlikely voyage searching for something to believe in.
Right in her home town Sant’Omero, a small village in centre of Italy, the director
Caterina decides to give it a try. The unaware heroes of her childhood, Creola (77
y.o.), Leandro (89 y.o.) and Angelo (68 y.o.), become the guides of this arduous and,
at times, surreal search for the meaning...
PARADIISI VÕTMED
Autor Caterina Carone
Filmi autor Caterina Carone on sündinud Kesk-Itaalia väikelinnas Sant’Omeros.
LAKSHMI AND ME
59 min. 2008 India (filmed in India, USA, Denmark and Finland)
“What sin did I commit to be born a woman?” Lakshmi wonders aloud. A 21-year-old housemaid
in Mumbai, she works ten hours a day, seven days a week. One of her employers is Nishtha Jain,
who begins to make a documentary that explores their relationship. Nishtha films Lakshmi at
home, and at work in various houses. Lakshmi’s is a precarious existence to begin with; illness
and romance compound her problems in unexpected ways.
As the filmmaker is drawn deeper into Lakshmi’s life, she is forced to question many of the things
she takes for granted. During a year and a half of dramatic changes, the process of filming has
its own impact on unfolding events and on the relationship between the two women.
LAKSHMI JA MINA
Autor Nishtha Jain
Nishtha Jain on loonud emotsionaalse portree 21-aastasest hindu neiust Lakshmi’st. Mumbais
Filmi autor on üks Lakshmi tööandjatest. Ta jälgib neiut hommikust õhtuni
poolteise aasta jooksul.
muutub topeltportreeks, kus autori enda isiksusel on peakangelasega võrdne roll.
LIFE IN FLOOD WATER
43 min. 2007 Germany (filmed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland)
Water is life, for without water no life can exist. But water can also mean death and destruction.
When rivers flood their banks, then the element reveals its devastating power.
In 1997 the Oder flooded its banks, in 2002 the Elbe, and in 2005 there were floods throughout
the land at the foothills of the Alps. Evacuations of entire districts, damages in billions, people
injured and dead were the consequences.
Yet life in nature waits longingly each year for this event. In spring, when the snow melts and the
first rainfalls cause the water level to rise, then life returns to the river after the winter. Alluvial
forests are among the eco-systems with the greatest abundance of species. River banks and
their forests are Europe’s last jungles – and of great significance not only for flora and fauna.
Alluvial forests are actually a perfect protection against the devastating floods that people fear
so much. But only a small fraction of the rivers in Europe still has natural flood-plain woods.
Straightened, dammed and dyked – man has tried to tame the rivers and use them for his own
purposes. But water cannot be locked in. The documentary shows how the rivers are now
reclaiming their rightful place in the landscape, how skilfully the animals cope with the floods
and how humans could learn from the cleverness of nature.
ELU TULVAVEES
Autorid Doris Tromballa ja Florian Guthknecht
Saksa filmitegijad Doris ja Florian mõtisklevad elu üle Alpidest mere poole voolavate jõgede
kallastel. Mitte üksnes lumeveed, vaid ka paduvihmadest tekkinud tulvaveed ujutavad üle suuri
alasid. 1997.aastal tuli üle kallaste Oder, 2002.aastal Elbe, 2005.aastal paljud Alpidest algavad
paljudele metsloomadele. Filmi autorid soovitavad inimestel õppida looduse mõistlikust
“A few moments in your life always remain to haunt you. They may fade from your memory, but
suddenly they return. Like a fire, lit by a personal detail, occasionally insignificant, occasionally
sharp and important. After a major blaze, the fire may smoulder on underground and then flare
up again unexpectedly in that special, unprotected place.” Kees Hin
In a Dutch village, an 80-year-old widow was murdered. Everyone knew her. The inhabitants
were all very restless. After four months of investigation, the police finally resorted to a modern
technique to help solve the murder. 80 men were asked to supply a saliva sample from which their
unique DNA could be isolated. In the film, memories of that DNA testing are reconstructed,
bringing the time back to life. One by one, the men are asked to describe the experience, the
moment when their lives were put to the test, like a photographic snapshot.
The film starts with the experiences of the painter Edvard Munch, who suddenly felt a trembling
in fear and heard a scream of nature as he walked over the bridge.
NGAT IS DEAD: STUDYING MORTUAR TRADITIONS
59 min. 2004-2007 Denmark (filmed in Papua New Guinea)
THE NINE MOVEMENTS OF THE EYELID
110 min. 2008 Portugal (filmed in Portugal, India, Germany and The Netherlands)
Starting from the first visual and acoustical impressions perceived when watching the classical
dance Bharatanatyam from South India, with a perception filtered by the cultural background
of the West, this documentary slowly approaches the dance and its dancers in order to find
out more, to understand more. To see how a dance with ancient roots can be relevant in
today’s time, and if this dance can be mastered also by performers other than Indian origin.
By exploring themes on tradition and modernity, art and life, women’s roles in society, culture
and globalization, East and West, it also clearly shows that intercultural understanding requires
a lot more of work and effort than mere consuming foreign food, music, images or clothes.
But then also slowly, slowly something unforeseen reveals, and this is the wisdom which can
be relevant to every human being despite his cultural background...
OFF THE GRID WITH LES STROUD
72 min. 2005/2006 Canada
In 2003, one massive power outage put most of the Eastern Seaboard – more than 50 million
ONE MAN IN THE BAND
83 min. 2007 UK (filmed in UK and France)
One Man in the Band conjures up images of tuneless street entertainers with drums on their
backs and cymbals on their knees, whereas contemporary one-man bands are diverse and
vibrant in their musical output. They are more than just solo performers: a one-man band brings
to the stage noise and spectacle worthy of a whole band. However, unmediated by creative
collaboration, the result can have a peculiar intensity verging on the downright eccentric. This
film follows a selection of contemporary one-man bands from Europe and the USA. Their
musical output often defies categorisation, ranging from theremin rock to hurricane drum
solos and a backing band made of bicycle wheels. As it becomes clear that life on the road for
a one-man band is a journey into solitude, so the documentary asks the question: what drives
us to create, and is it worth the pain.
A documentary of dreams, immigration, and Spanish tomatoes. Paradise – Three Journeys in
This World is a poetic documentary film on African emigration to Europe. The first journey
takes us along the route of the tomato trucks to Almeria in Spain, where the undocumented
African immigrants grow vegetables for European markets. The second journey takes us to
Morocco. We meet Adam, who escaped war in Ivory Coast, and was dumped into Sahara desert
in November 2005, along 500 other emigrants. He walked more than 1000 kilometres from the
desert to Rabat, the capital of Morocco. The third trip leads us trough the desert, to Bakary
PEACE WITH SEALS
86 min. 2007 Italy/Czech Republic
In the time of Homer, seals were the most widespread inhabitants of Europe’s largest biotope,
the Mediterranean Sea. Today, with sun-tanning being so fashionable, people have replaced the
seals on the beaches. Seals have become one of the most endangered mammals in Europe. Where
will we be able to encounter wild animals in the future? How are animals being domesticated?
And what is the domestication of people?
The Kalasha tribe of the Hindukush in NW Pakistan is a minority of 3-4000 people with its
SOUTH INDIAN THALI
27 min. 2007 Finland (filmed in India)
A subjective documentary set in Kerala, South India. The stunning beauty, the potent dose of
reality and the fascination of traditional dances and rituals are paralleled with the many courses
of a Thali meal. Thali is a popular meal of many different dishes, served in small metal bowls on
a round tray. There are six or seven bowls, as there are scenes in the film. The flavours and the
spiciness of the dishes vary from mild to mouth-burning. Each little dish has its own name.
Just like rice brings together the alternating flavours on a Thali tray, the film combines the ritual
TEA ROAD TO THE SKIES: IN THE HEART OF SHANGRI-LA
52 min. 2007 France/China (filmed in China)
It crosses the roof of the world, winding more than 6,000 tortuous kilometres across 20
mountain chains and two desert plateaux. It spans four great rivers, and cuts through the territory
of 20 different ethnic groups. This is the ancient Tea Road, which opens Southwest China onto
Tibet and thereby Nepal, India, Persia, Mongolia and Russia, and then Europe. The legendary
Tea Road was crossed by innumerable horse trains for countless centuries. Their tracks are
beaten deep into the rocks. This series of High Definition films follows in the hoof prints of
those caravans which hauled their baggage of tea across the Tibetan Plateau.
The horse drivers of the caravan are considered half mythical – men of great honour, for they
have seen a lot and they know a lot. The film follows lots of interesting spots, Tibetan shamans
and monks; wedding ceremony; singing and dancing and sacrifice of tea for the good of the
harsh journey in the mountains...
THAT’S LIFE
The author of the documentary seeks what has become of some of the children he photographed
and white photo booklet that Sander Veeneman compiled and sent to the 25.000 most influential
poverty issues in the world. Since 2003 Veeneman and his First8 foundation create awareness
With the camera on shoulder and sometimes no more information than the name and age of
ZIETEK
17 min. 2008 Poland
It is a portrait of the old sculptor, Bogdan Ziętek. The self-made artist has been creating real-size
women sculptures for over 40 years. His whole house is filled with sexy pin-up girls made of
lime trees. They all have names and specific characteristics. Sometimes they become alive and
talk to the artist. Everything is happening with the acceptance of sculptor’s wife. The borders
between reality and dreams, the truth and imaginary world slowly vanish.
ZIETEK
Autor Bartosz Blaschke
Bartosz Blaschke film portreteerib vanahärrat Bogdan Zietek’i, kes on enam kui 40 aastat puust
Kõigil puukujudel on nimed. Vahel nad ärkavad ellu ja kõnetavad Bogdanit. Vahe reaalsuse ja
imaginaarsuse vahel kaob…
Since the first festival in 1987, our tradition has been to visit
islanders in Manija and Kihnu. The bare land of Manija
was inhabited by settlers from Kihnu in 1933. This year
they celebrate the 75th anniversary of the history of their
native land amongst the sea.
One of those who carries on the skills of traditional
Kihnu handicraft is Vilma Havik, the housewife of Tooma
farm.
The indigenous Kihnu culture was included into the
UNESCO’s list of intangible and oral masterpieces of
mankind in 2003.
Alates esimesest festivalist 1987.aastal on meil olnud
traditsiooniks käia külas Kihnus ja Manijal. Lageda
Manija saare asustasid kihnlased 1933.aastal, seega saavad
manijalased sel aastal tähistada oma saare ajaloo 75-ndat
aastapäeva.
Üks neist, kes annab edasi kihnu käsitöö oskusi, on Tooma
talu perenaine Vilma Havik.
Kihnu pärimuskultuur võeti UNESCO suulise ja vaimse
kultuuri nimistusse 2003. aastal.
