SUMMERCHILD
60 min. 2007 Finland (filmed in Finland and Russia)
Over the summer vacation, a Finnish couple opens their home to a Russian orphan, who lives
a mere 60 kilometres away. Geographic proximity is about all that the generous couple and
11-year-old Sveta have in common. Sveta doesn’t say much and the do-gooders struggle to pull
her out of her shell, addressing her in Finnish, a language she does not understand. Summerchild
is an intriguing and revelatory look at the role that performance and motive play in the act
of charity. The cultural and economic gap between Finland and Russia is sharply mirrored in
Sveta’s personal struggle to connect with Tiina and Peter, and to express herself freely, outside
the confines of the orphanage and beyond her role as charity case.
SUVELAPS
Autor Iris Olsson
Üks Ida-Soome perekond otsustab avada oma koduukse vene orvule, kes elab teisel pool piiri,
vaid 60 kilomeetri kaugusel kutsujatest. Sveta veedab kogu suve soome peres. Tüdruk ei oska
sõnakestki soome keelt. Sveta, kes on üles kasvanud erinevas kultuuriruumis, ei suuda harjuda
Lääne-Euroopa kommetega. Režissöör Isi Olssoni film otsib sildu, kuidas kaks rahvast saaksid
teineteist paremini mõista ja aidata.
VANUATU, THE PIG ISLANDS
52 min. 2007 France (filmed in Vanuatu)
Rejected in many countries, in Vanuatu the pig has the status of a family pet but also of a
totemic animal. The pig is at the centre of ancestral rituals. Today, these rituals are threatened
by the dominant religions and modernity.
For 30 years, one man has battled to make these traditions known and to preserve them.
By virtue of his convictions and determination, the British anthropologist Kirk Huffman has
become one of the rare outsiders to receive instruction in the customs of Vanuatu.
59 min. 2006 The Netherlands
Puck de Leeuw (48) is a filmmaker in the prime of her career when she is diagnosed with
terminal lung cancer. The prognosis given is: one year or less.
Her video diary shows what is happening to Puck and to those near her while facing an inevitable
death. Hope and despair, a physical struggle with a carcinomatous body and a mental fight
against time. In seemingly every-day scenes and situations we see how, in all their vulnerability,
Puck as well as the people around her make an effort to deal with the whirlblast that they are
caught up in.
Puck’s video diary tells about author’s passions, hope, despair and incredible beauty of life.
