CONFLUENCES - EMERILLON OF FRENCH GUIANA

Like forceful omens, scientific reports have hitherto depicted the Amerindian Emerillon as
cultureless and doomed to disappear.
With this film, an anthropologist proposes to defy these negative images, by the same token
delving into their world. Several young Emerillon take up the challenge, and through their
resourceful and often stumbling efforts to maintain a life in the forest while profiting from their
status as French citizens, they present another version of what being Emerillon is about.
There emerges a rare, profoundly generous and non-ethnocentric discourse, one that asserts
that to feel yourself as Emerillon does not necessarily imply feeling fundamentally different
from others.

The film is an intimate portrait of a rare and exceptional spiritual community and the women
who built it up. For centuries, monasteries have served as spiritual and educational centers for
rural areas of Tibet where subsistence farmers and nomadic yak herders engaged in the daily
struggle survive. Mostly, monastic life has only been available to men, as it is generally believed
that educating a woman is a waste of valuable resources. But Kala Rongo Monastery, in remote
North-eastern Tibet, is granting women choices they’ve never had before, as they play an
unprecedented role in preserving their rich cultural heritage even as they slowly reshape it.
