JOE GOES TO SERBIA 51 min. 2007 Serbia It is the fourth summer in a row that Josef Arone from San Francisco comes to Serbia. He makes street-performances as Joe Mama the clown and from July till September, over the countryside and around the capital, from the trumpet festival to the war zone, he is in the mission of spreading joy. Joe parties wherever he can, but his idea of joy is more profound. He wants to spread it, especially in the areas where people forgot it. The “Bread and Cheese Circus” that he founded here with his friends, goes to Kosovo to make performances for the refugee children that live there. Each day, with a bag filled with his own works, he hitchhikes to the city center where he writes poems and makes paintings (at least 15 a day) in his favorite cafes. As a retired actor he has a number of stories to tell which he stores using a portable tape recorder, and during Christmas time he dresses as Santa Claus. Though widely known in Iceland, Ketill remains a mysterious figure and an exception to the social norm. The film, shot by a pair of artists using the method of subjective camera and devoid of voiceover commentary, documents everyday activities and meetings of Ketill – an artistic individual – and brings the audience closer to the world of fantasy that is Ketill. Nishtha films Lakshmi at home, and at work in various houses. Lakshmi’s is a precarious existence to begin with; illness and romance compound her problems in unexpected ways. As the filmmaker is drawn deeper into Lakshmi’s life, she is forced to question many of the things she takes for granted. During a year and a half of dramatic changes, the process of filming has its own impact on unfolding events and on the relationship between the two women. But water can also mean death and destruction. When rivers flood their banks, then the element reveals its devastating power. In 1997 the Oder flooded its banks, in 2002 the Elbe, and in 2005 there were floods throughout the land at the foothills of the Alps. Evacuations of entire districts, damages in billions, people injured and dead were the consequences. Yet life in nature waits longingly each year for this event. In spring, when the snow melts and the first rainfalls cause the water level to rise, then life returns to the river after the winter. Alluvial forests are among the eco-systems with the greatest abundance of species. River banks and their forests are Europe’s last jungles – and of great significance not only for flora and fauna. Alluvial forests are actually a perfect protection against the devastating floods that people fear so much. But only a small fraction of the rivers in Europe still has natural flood-plain woods. Straightened, dammed and dyked – man has tried to tame the rivers and use them for his own purposes. But water cannot be locked in. The documentary shows how the rivers are now reclaiming their rightful place in the landscape, how skilfully the animals cope with the floods and how humans could learn from the cleverness of nature.
