THE SACRED GOATS
44 min. 2008 Denmark (filmed in Pakistan)
The Kalasha tribe of the Hindukush in NW Pakistan is a minority of 3-4000 people with its
own religion and culture. The Kalash are the last remnants of a goat culture that dominated
in vast areas of Central Asia till the advent of Islam. This culture is now endangered due to
plans of making the precious high pastures into a buffer zone for the Chitral Gol Nature Park
with Snow Leopard and Marchor. Also, neighbouring people make lawsuits against the Kalash
claiming for the pastures. The goats are basis of the religion and economy of the Kalash.
The film shows all the aspects of Kalasha life where goats are important – directly or indirectly.
For example we see all the dairy production, ritual purifications, sacrifices to God, because the
Kalash do not “pray with empty hands”.
