LAST YOIK IN SAAMI FORESTS?
59 min. 2007 Finland (filmed in Finland and Norway)
The documentary chronicles the logging damage that has taken place in the forests of Finnish
Lapland over the past 50 years. Home to the indigenous Saami peoples, these forests are essential
to Saami reindeer herding, a traditional way of life that the Saami hope to continue into future
generations. Population growth in Finland has created economic pressure – prompting migration
to the Saami lands in the North. The resulting forest cutting severely depletes the lichen necessary
for free reindeer grazing, and logging infrastructure disrupts the entire forest ecosystem.
The film shows a state-owned logging company Metsahallitus in the exploitation of Saami
resources, and shows that the Finnish government has done little to preserve this natural resource.
The issue of indigenous land rights is the heart of the problem, and till the completion of this
film in 2007, it remains unresolved.
MAKING RAIN
58 min. 2007 Estonia/Norway/Mozambique (filmed in Mozambique)
The Vumba Hills in central Mozambique, close to the Zimbabwe border, are the kingdom of
Mambo (Chief) Chirara. The Mambo’s leading position is acknowledged by the government,
and in addition to being the region’s most important spiritual leader, the Mambo has the right
to hold court cases that deal with minor crimes, problems involving spirits and domestic
affairs. He is assisted by several subchiefs and ritual leaders. In the northernmost corner of the
Mambo’s kingdom, Mbuya Gondo, an over 70-years-old woman, is a spiritual medium. She
often holds ceremonies at a well-known rock drawing site. Mambo Chirara is not pleased with
the old lady’s activities. In his opinion, Mbuya Gondo acts too independently and demands
too much money for carrying out the ceremonies. In the film, gender issues and local politics
are brought to the surface as we follow these two leaders during a period of preparing for and
performing the annual rainmaking rituals.
VIHMA TEGEMINE
Autorid Liivo Niglas ja Frode Storaas
Vumba mäed Mosambiigi keskosas, Zimbabwe piiri lähedal, on Mambo Chirara kuningriik.
Mambot kui pealikku tunnustab ka valitsus ja nii on Mambol õigus mõista kohut kui küsimus
puudutab väiksemaid kuritegusid, vaimudega seotud lugusid ja koduseid juhtumeid. Mambot
abistavad mitmed asepealikud ja rituaalsed juhid.
Mambo kuningriigi põhjaosas elab šamaan Mbuya Gondo, üle seitsmekümnene naine. Ta
peab tihti talitusi tuntud kaljujooniste juures. Mambo Chirara ei ole vana naise tegevusega
rahul.
The history of an indigenous princess kidnapped by an anaconda is the point of item(game) of
this documentary that explores the myth and Maria Lionza’s worship, always in transformation
from the colonial times.
The documentary raises the multiple facets of the myth and of the worship, without obviating
any of these in spite of the fact that differences could arise, up to contradictions in the beliefs.
The absence of dogma and universal creed to the worship, they constitute the essence of this
magic – religious universe.
The peregrinate of a group of believers of different environments to Sorte’s mountain, Maria
Lionza’s kingdom, offers to know personal histories, motivations and vision of the spiritual
phenomenon, humanizing and personalizing the devotion to the goddess. The summation of the
peregrinate up to the top of the mountain, our history, the pilgrims as well as the investigation on
the iconography of the myth and of the worship, brings us nearer to an eclectic and permeable
Maria Lionza who has managed to survive and to adapt for more of 500 years, symbolizing the
spirit of the deepest and why not, genuine Venezuela.
MARIA LIONZA, ORHIDEEDE HINGUS
Autor John Petrizzelli
Müüt Maria Lionzast, Venetsueela põlisrahva printsessist, on küllaltki laialt levinud Sorte
mägedes. Juba koloniaalaja algusest peale räägitakse ja usutakse siin lugu kaunist naisest, kelle
röövis anakonda. Palverännakud Maria Lionza kuju juurde kestavad tänaseni ning räägivad
rahva usust imedesse.
John Petrizelli film on põhjalik uurimus ühe usu metamorfoosidest.
