Mine to Market November-December 2012 - Mount Isa Mines

During November, like thousands of
others around the world, Xstrata
men, and even entire crews and
departments, proudly sprouted
mo’s of all shapes and sizes in an effort to
raise funds and awareness for men’s health.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines, had very personal
reasons for supporting Movember.
“A few years ago I lost my aunt to
cancer, and this year my father-in-law
passed away from prostate cancer,”
Quinton says.
“Cancer touches almost everyone at
some point.
“I wanted to be part of changing the
face of men’s health by simply helping to
raise awareness and raising some vitally
needed funds,” he says.

George Fisher Mine also got involved.
“This was my seventh year as an
officially registered participant of
Movember,” Robbie says.
“It is certainly my favourite charity and
one I am very passionate about. It’s a fun
and very visible way of raising awareness
of men’s health issues, and my mates and I
have a blast fundraising for a worthy cause.
“I also love that I get away with
growing an outrageous mo’ for a month,”
Robbie says.
Zinc Open Pits (ZOPs) operations got
right into the spirit of Movember with
two teams lining up to out-fundraising
the other; ‘Finding Mo’s’ (Technical
Services Department) and ‘Flaming Mo’s’
(Maintenance, Capital Projects, Production
and Safety departments).
ZOPs held some great fundraising
activities including silent auctions, raffles
(including a private charter for two to
Innisfail for a full day reef fishing trip),
‘Hotdog Fridays’ and iceblock sales.
MICO also answered the call, pulling
together two teams; ‘Mo-ordination’
(MICO Coordination) and ‘Mine
Development Cookie Dusters’ (MICO
Development).
The ‘GFMX Mo Challenge’ (George
Fisher Mine Expansion Project) kicked off
fundraising activities at George Fisher with
two early morning pancake breakfasts.
Meanwhile, the Copper Smelter held a
dollar coin barbeque in support of their
team ’Sons of the Smelter’.
At the time of printing with the
combined efforts of Mount Isa Mines and
Ernest Henry Mine, our employees raised
almost $10,500 for Movember, and looked
set to break the $12,000 barrier by the end
of the month.
