Fishing Classic
The 2012 Xstrata Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic was a huge
success with a massive 655 competitors nominating and 304 fish
weighed in during the three day event.

Event organisers and volunteers were
run off their feet as thousands of
attendees enjoyed the jam packed
fishing and entertainment schedule.
Bill Rigby, also known as Barra Bill,
deservedly won the Heaviest Barramundi
title with a 13.94 kilogram whopper being
weighed in on Friday 26 October. In total,
eight large barramundi were brought in;
however, the $50,000 Mount Isa Water
Board tagged barra once again eluded
capture, leaving a $1,000 bounty on her
head if caught in the next twelve months.
Xstrata was victorious both on and
off the water with the Xstrata Dragon
Slayers from the Skills Centre once again
triumphant in the Chamber of Commerce’s
Dragon Boat Regatta. The Xstrata Copper
team also smashed their opponents in the
Buffs Beach Volleyball competition.
Our Xstrata stall was a hit with our
brightly coloured bucket hats offering
some much needed protection from the
hot sun, and our beach balls providing
hours of fun to families at the event.

Manager says it was great to see
the competition and camp sites
filled with smiling children and
happy families.
“With anglers nominating from as
far away as Geelong, Hervey Bay and
Longreach it’s obvious that word has
gotten out that the classic is Queensland’s
richest freshwater fishing competition,”
says George.
“The Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group is
very excited about putting proceeds from
the event towards purchasing fingerlings
to stock the lake.”
Kimberley Busteed, special guest from
Channel 7’s Creek to Coast, says she can’t
wait to return with her friends and family
next year.
“Lake Moondarra is absolutely
stunning. I had no idea Mount Isa
boasted such a scenic body of
water. The festival has been such
a wonderful introduction to not
only the lake but also to Isa and
its friendly locals,” Kimberly says.
