It was not unlike birthing, actually. As a mother who has experienced natural childbirth, the waves of contractions in labor moved in exactly the same way. I was able to breathe and flow with the enormity of it, surrendering to the pulsations in my body that expelled and birthed the experience. And so I imagine, these waves are true in life as well. A period of intense communication and healing might be followed by a few weeks of integration. We cannot invite intense experiences all the time; integration is also necessary. In the healing session, my counselor said the release happens in waves, and indeed it did – one wave of emotion would arise to be cleared, followed by a rest period, followed by another wave of pain or emotion. Enlightenment is always followed by washing dishes, doing laundry and chores. In spiritual work we move from deep states of awareness to everyday interactions. The spiritual path integrates heaven and earth, divine ecstasy with daily routine. Am I free from my obligations in my relationships? No, rebirthing did not change my karmic circumstances. I am still engaged in my work with them. But it did re-wire me. It did cut the residual ties binding me to their work. It returned the energy to me. Things that are unresolved in your heart and mind drain your body’s energy; they simply don’t feel good; whether it’s a small irritation emotionally or an actual physical pain or tumor, it isn’t your natural state of buoyancy and delight. Rebirthing, hypnosis and deep work in the subconscious are not healing methods you would use on a daily basis. Yoga, chanting, aerobic exercise and meditation are simple practices recommended for daily maintenance. However, when physical or emotional pain surfaces that is too great to bear, we have available to us tools of deeper healing.
