and tending to children. (Sound familiar?) They were relegated to consorts who could only rule if they were legitimized by the female leader. And, the “king” was ritually killed as a metaphor for death, particularly after the leading “Goddess” representative found herself pregnant (a metaphor for rebirth). I sense a swinging of the pendulum toward the center here in the United States and around the world. Certain events have served as the catalysts that are propelling women into an ability to lead own themselves and lead, including women earning the right to vote; the pill and abortion rights (i.e., controlling her own genetics and body); the Women’s Movement; even the proliferation of women’s networking groups and the emergence of women in leadership positions in business and government. This is happening – slowly – but it’s happening. Perhaps this time in history brings an opportunity for a new consciousness to be born – the perfect balance of the feminine and the masculine. Not patriarchy, not feminism … but humanism – an equality between two necessary genders, both of which are less than they might be as a result of losing touch with Goddess culture. Each of us possesses both feminine and masculine qualities. Neither gender should be relegated to a “manbox” or a “woman-box.” It’s unfair to our human nature. We owe it to our daughters and our sons. Nearly every woman I know is on a journey to discover herself in some way. Intuitively, we women know that there’s something of the Goddess in each of us that has been silenced in countless ways. Likewise, men seem to be searching for some lost part of themselves. The universe constantly seeks a balance. Together, both genders comprise the whole in equal parts. This is an important time. In order to know where we’re going or need to go, it’s important to understand where we’ve been. We need to remember The Great Goddess who is an intrinsic and vital part of us all.
