POWER TRANSMISSION Integrated Motors Motor design goes modular SEW-Eurodrive has taken away all the constraints in specifying AC motors with the introduction of the DR series of products With the launch of its DR series of AC motors, SEW reckons it has one modular system that will meet a diverse range of different application requirements. The motor offers the user all energy efficient standards available worldwide, integrates BE brakes to enable you to choose and install different brake sizes to one DR motor size, enables encoders to be installed behind the fan rather than on the B end, so reducing the length of the motor, and provides interchangeability with SEW’s existing gear units. Integrating standard and energy efficient motors in one modular system offers a number of advantages, primarily the ability to obtain all standard and standard-compliant motors from one modular system. Further, users benefit from reduced complexity, for example when replacing wearing parts. Spare parts kept on stock and costs involved are reduced because the ancillary accessories are the same for all motor variants. The configuration is based on the standard motor (IE1 or EFF2); an energy efficient motor of the same power (IE2, High Efficiency or EFF1) is realised in a motor that is one stage larger than the standard motor. An energy efficient motor with the same power (IE3 or Premium Efficiency) is two stages larger. The modular system for BE brakes offer a number of advantages, too. Costs are reduced since the brake size can be tailored to the application. Also, simple assembly and disassembly facilitates serviceability. The BE brake is based on the BM(G) brake, but with some interesting developments. In particular, for DT/DV motors, the brake size is related to the motor size. A weaker brake is only possible by reducing the braking torque by means of a modified brake spring. The new combination options of DR motors with BE brakes is no longer subject to this fixed assignment. The DR motor can be combined with two or three different BE brake sizes. Depending on the braking torque or braking work required, the DR motor can be combined with the ideal BE brake. Easy replacement Brake mounting to motors size 90 and larger offers another special feature. The brake itself is mounted on a friction plate, which only has to be attached to the end shield. The unit can now be demounted and replaced, also by a larger or smaller brake, without opening the motor. The DR series AC motors can be equipped with the new built-in encoders, which offers advantages of its own. In particular, it makes the overall package very compact, seeing as the encoder does not contribute additional motor length. It also provides a cost-efficient alternative for simple requirements on speed control and positioning. With the encoder mechanically safe inside the fan guard, the package is highly robust. Interchangeability with SEW- Eurodrive gear units means that the new DR motor series can replace any of the existing DT/DV series motors. The coil, PCB, laminated stack and front-end cover are all encapsulated together in an injection moulded LCP (liquid crystal polymer), giving outstanding mechanical and thermal features. The Neodymium rare earth magnet provides superior dynamic performance. The monolithic design ensures a simple compact and very robust stator is guaranteed. The anodised aluminium front and rear motor covers provide the optimum location for pre-loaded ball bearings, a secure mounting fixture in the application and ensure excellent heat dissipation. The modular construction gives this motor real versatility. The entry-level motor is sensorless, resulting in a costeffective solution suitable for demanding drive applications where precise speed control is required. If more sophisticated motion control is required then the motors can be equipped with a hall sensor module with either digital or analogue <strong>sensors</strong>. Complementary drive electronics and the comprehensive range of minimotor gearheads, enables optimisation of the drive to meet the most demanding applications. Integrated motor delivers accurate speed control The MDrivePlus product line from IMS, combining motor, driver and encoder, now offers increased functionality with the integration of a digital oscillator for accurate speed control. The resulting MDrive34Plus 2 Speed Control provides an all-in-one variable speed control solution that utilises a NEMA size 34 high-torque brushless 1.8° motor, with NEMA size 17 and 23 motors also available. The MDrive34Plus 2 Speed Control includes a programmable oscillator along with an easy-toprogram parameter setup GUI communicating over SPI. Features include two separate configurable speed control inputs that may be preset and digitally selected, an output frequency up to 5MHz, and three adjustable modes of operation: voltage, current and PWM. Step and direction output signals may be used to control a second axis that follows the speed of the first, simplifying wiring and controlling machines with large tables or wide conveyors while eliminating drift between motor speeds. The MDrive34Plus 2 Speed Control accepts a broad input voltage range from +12 to +75V DC, delivering enhanced performance and speed. Oversized input capacitors are used to minimise power line surges, reducing problems that can occur with long runs and multiple drive <strong>systems</strong>.
