SENSORS & SYSTEMS Optical Inspection Reducing false failure rates A new approach to automated optical inspection that is delivering extraordinary results OptiFox, an automatic optical inspection (AOI) system from Tralec, utilises a proprietary lensing system that has unrivalled performance in both resolution and depth of field. The result is a larger image capture size, 50x70mm with a depth of field over 30mm, containing more detail than images captured by any other AOI system, says the company. More detail means more information, which translates to higher fault detection capability and much lower false failure rates. These characteristics are the basis for an efficient and precise pattern-matching procedure. Pattern-matching means that from the overlapping display details with a size of 50x70mm a complete image of the module is created automatically. With just a few mouse clicks on the user interface, you can set up what is to be tested on the module, including components, solder joints, labelling, bar codes, shapes of the circuit board, free areas, positions of DIP switches and so on. There is practically no limit to the choice of the samples to be tested. The sampling ratio is chosen according to default settings or corrected according to user demands. OptiFox uses the proprietary Olbrich Lensing System (OLS) Optics – which Tralec reckons are the only optics on the planet that can provide OptiFox the ability to capture distortion-free images with a depth focus of 30mm in a format of more than 30cm 2 . Multiple advantages By capturing enough high resolution, distortion-free images to encompass the entire area of the board under test, OptiFox is able to generate a complete composite image of the board using a patternmatching process. It is from this composite image that OptiFox does all fault detection and analysis. The first advantage of this approach is that no fiducial detection is required at all. In fact, the board can be several millimetres out of alignment from the expected start position with no impact on the quality of the test. The second advantage is that all areas of test are established by their expected position relative to all other areas in the composite image, and not from fiducial references. OptiFox utilises a dual axis single lens motion system to facilitate twodimensional image capture. A future enhancement, utilising the same single lens motion system, will provide 3D imaging for enhanced inspection. The board under test can be inserted manually into the system or by automated transport using the SMEMA protocol. OptiFox is PC driven from a standard USB port and a flexible library of the objects to be tested is easily enhanced or maintained either manually or with CAD data. Because of a compact size of 50x50x50cm and low weight 25kg, OptiFox can be flexibly used at any point on a production line or just about anywhere in a production facility. As a result of this high-resolution, object-oriented pattern-matching test technique, OptiFox is not limited to the optical inspection of circuit bards. It can be used for optical inspection of just about anything that has a defined shape, like punched parts, screws, nuts, etc. A system as flexible as OptiFox can continue to provide economic benefit in the rapidly changing environment of circuit board manufacturing long after other systems become obsolete. Tralec has also developed an electrical test system, called PinFox. Like OptiFox, PinFox utilises radically new concepts to provide low-cost yet high-performance modular solutions for all types of simple as well as sophisticated electrical test needs. Tralec recognises that multiple test strategies, as well as test methods, are often a necessity. Optical and electrical test systems are, by definition, complementary. One will find faults that the other can’t.
