8.2 Conclusion
The primary questions for this investigation were – (i) what was the H 2 S detection
threshold for a non-laboratory type screening panel? and, (ii) was there a difference
in the results obtained for people living in an area with naturally high levels of H 2 S
(Rotorua) and those living elsewhere?
The H 2 S detection threshold for the entire 59 panellists was 0.7 µg/m 3 . For the
Whakatāne sub-group the H 2 S detection threshold was 0.5 µg/m 3 . For the Rotorua
subgroup the H 2 S detection threshold was 1.1 µg/m 3 .
Statistically there is a difference in threshold values for the subgroups. However in a
real world situation this difference would be regarded as being insignificant.
