Academic Advising<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> is committed to the belief that<br />

academic advising engages students by teaching them how to<br />

become members <strong>of</strong> the higher education community, to think<br />

critically about their role and responsibilities as engineers,<br />

and to prepare them to be educated members <strong>of</strong> a global<br />

community.<br />

New <strong>Student</strong>s<br />

New freshman students are assigned to <strong>Engineering</strong> Advising<br />

Services for academic advising until they have completed<br />

the freshman curriculum. Freshman students admitted to the<br />

<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> are required to designate a field <strong>of</strong><br />

study by the end <strong>of</strong> their freshman year. Upon completion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> Fundamentals 152 (or equivalent), the students<br />

are assigned faculty advisors in their selected departments.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> Advising Office delivers<br />

academic advising on an appointment basis.<br />

Estabrook Hall. Advising appointments are<br />

normally <strong>of</strong>fered on thirty-minute individual<br />

intervals. Hours <strong>of</strong> operation are from 8:00 a.m.<br />

to 5:00 p.m. (Eastern), Monday through Friday.<br />

All students must meet with an advisor in the <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

Advising Office until they successfully complete <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

Fundamentals 151-152 or 157-158 and Math 141-142 or 147-148.<br />

Computer Science students must complete Math 141-142,<br />

147-148 and Computer Science 102 and 140. Once EF 151-152<br />

and Math 141-142 are successfully completed and students<br />

have a cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.00 (good academic standing)<br />

then students’ files are sent to the engineering major <strong>of</strong><br />

their choice. <strong>Student</strong>s are assigned to faculty advisors in<br />

their major <strong>of</strong> choice who assist with academic advising and<br />

career planning to the completion <strong>of</strong> the degree. Successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> courses is a grade <strong>of</strong> C or better. <strong>The</strong> NC (No<br />

Credit) grade or W (withdrawal) are not passing grades.<br />

<strong>Student</strong>s must repeat courses with a grade <strong>of</strong> NC or W until<br />

successfully completed.<br />

Academic Standing<br />

<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Tennessee, Knoxville, expects all students<br />

who enter to make progress toward graduation. To graduate<br />

from UT Knoxville, a student must earn a minimum cumulative<br />

grade point average (GPA) <strong>of</strong> 2.00. <strong>The</strong> university reviews<br />

students’ academic records at the end <strong>of</strong> each term to<br />

determine academic standing. <strong>The</strong> catalog contains additional<br />

requirements for specific programs.<br />

Good Academic Standing<br />

A student is in good academic standing when both the<br />

student’s term and cumulative GPAs are 2.00 or higher or, if<br />

after two consecutive terms, the student’s cumulative GPA is<br />

2.00 or higher and at least one term GPA is also 2.00 or higher.<br />

Academic Probation<br />

A student will be placed on Academic Probation when (1) his/<br />

her cumulative GPA falls below the minimum acceptable level<br />

<strong>of</strong> 2.00 for one semester or (2) the semester GPA falls below<br />

the minimum acceptable level <strong>of</strong> 2.00 two consecutive terms<br />

<strong>of</strong> enrollment. During the semester that a student is placed on<br />

Academic Probation, and any other semesters in Academic<br />

Probation, a student must participate in a special directive<br />

advising program to help the student address concerns that<br />

are impacting his/her academic performance and to outline<br />

a plan for achieving academic success. This model <strong>of</strong> early<br />

intervention is designed to help students regroup and position<br />

themselves for academic success. <strong>Student</strong>s on Academic<br />

Probation status during a term will automatically be dismissed<br />

at the end <strong>of</strong> that term if both:<br />

A student will no longer be on academic probation when his<br />

or her cumulative grade point average is 2.00 or higher and<br />

the term grade point average is 2.00 or higher. This policy is in<br />

place in recognition <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Tennessee, Knoxville’s<br />

minimum grade point average <strong>of</strong> 2.00 for graduation.<br />
