Respiratory infection Outreach and Research Team
OVERVIEW
The Respiratory infection Outreach and Research (RiOAR) Team is a new group established
in QCMRI in 2012 under the leadership of Dr Kerry-Ann O’Grady. RiOAR is a subgroup of the
Cough, Asthma and Airways Research Group led by Professor Anne Chang and the two
teams work closely together on a number of projects.
RiOAR’s research focus is acute respiratory infections in children with an emphasis on
epidemiology, clinical outcomes and prevention at the primary and secondary levels. A major
component is acute respiratory illnesses in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with
capacity building of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals in research.
The year has been dedicated to establishing the group and a number of large research projects.
An exciting initiative has been the establishment of an Indigenous Research Reference Group to
oversee the team’s research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
