Centre for Children’s Burns and Trauma Research MESSAGE FROM GROUP LEADER The research conducted by the Centre for Children’s Burns and Trauma Research (CCBTR) focuses on paediatric burns, paediatric trauma and acute wound healing. The centre was established in 1999 by Professor Roy Kimble and aims to - ‣ Understand the causes of paediatric trauma, identify ways to decrease the number of children with burns and traumatic injuries, and implement these changes. ‣ Provide scientific evidence for existing treatments and development of novel wound healing treatments for better burn care of children suffering from burns. ‣ To improve the lives of all children suffering from burns or trauma. The CCBTR is one of the leading burns and trauma research groups in Australia and is lead by Professor Kimble, who is a burn surgeon and Director of Paediatric Trauma on the QLD Trauma Network. The CCBTR is a multidisciplinary team, comprised of QCMRI researchers who are located in laboratories and offices at the Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute (QCMRI), in the University of QLD Department of Paediatrics and Child Health and in the Stuart Pegg Paediatric Burns Centre (SPPBC) at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) - one of the largest paediatric Burns Centres in Australasia. The laboratory is situated next to the Burns Centre in the Royal Children’s Hospital and the clinical and laboratory aspects of the research are well integrated. Problems seen in the clinical setting are driving quality laboratory and clinical-trial research which then are used to inform evidence-based treatment of children with burns and trauma. Summary of Research Activities and Achievements 2012 has been a very positive year for CCBTR. The team were successful in securing a QCMRI program grant. The objective of this program is to develop and establish an extensive network of research aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of children with burns and other traumatic injuries. This program is an exciting collaboration between established researchers from UQ, QUT, James Cook University and Queensland Health with strengths in different areas, to tackle wound healing and other sequelae associated with burns and traumatic injuries. Professor Kimble was an invited speaker at a number of international conferences in the United Kingdom including the International Society for Burn Injury in Edinburgh in September. Dr Cuttle and Ms Brown also presented oral papers at this International Burns QCMRI Scientific Report 2012 66
Forum. A number of posters and oral papers were presented by CCBTR researchers at The Australian New Zealand Burns Association Annual Conference in Hobart, October 2012. The QCMRI Program Grant enabled CCBTR to establish a new position: Clinical Research Manager, CCBTR. Dr Stockton commenced with the team in October 2012.
