The year is 2004, it is three years s<strong>in</strong>ce the gruesome attack on the World Trade<br />

Center. Today it is happen<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>, this time – the target is an educational <strong>in</strong>stitution. It<br />

was apparently easy to take over due the relaxed security <strong>in</strong> a campus environment; the<br />

consequences are often devastat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The University of Missouri – Rolla is suddenly faced with a situation. The<br />

computer science build<strong>in</strong>g has been taken over by terrorists. The only <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

received on the situation is that the build<strong>in</strong>g has been booby trapped with explosive<br />

devices. Police arriv<strong>in</strong>g at the scene managed to kill one of the members of the operation<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g an attempt to escape, the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g managed to flee. The current death toll is put<br />

at 4 dead <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 3 graduate students and a professor. There are also a number of<br />

<strong>in</strong>juries. The build<strong>in</strong>g has been cordoned off and is off-limits until your team of first<br />

responders can defuse the situation.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the latest reports, there are no terrorists rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

But the fires and explosions cont<strong>in</strong>ue to rage. This situation needs to be neutralized. You<br />

are a first responder- primary profession – fire fighter. It is your responsibility to enter the<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g, to check the different floors for any possible threats and elim<strong>in</strong>ate them. You<br />

are required to remember the locations of each dead/wounded civilian trapped <strong>in</strong>side the<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g to report to paramedics that would arrive <strong>in</strong> 12 m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />

Experiment directives:<br />

1. Move around <strong>in</strong> the VR environment of the computer science build<strong>in</strong>g. Explore<br />

all three floors.<br />

2. Enter rooms to locate dead/wounded people and remember the locations to report<br />

to paramedics after the expedition. (THIS IS YOUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVE)<br />

3. On event of fire:<br />

a. locate the nearest fire alarm and set it off;<br />

b. locate the nearest fire ext<strong>in</strong>guisher and pick it up (if you aren’t already<br />

carry<strong>in</strong>g one)
