English - Reducing Transboundary Degradation in the Kura Ara(k)

ORGANIZATION
The Scientific Training is organized by the
UNDP/GEF project “Reducing transboundary
degradation in the Kura Aras river basin”, as part
of the project’s Demonstration Project
Component.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVE
The objective of the 2012 thematic NGO forum
is to help identify current stakeholder activities in
the region and identify opportunities for
cooperation at the national and regional level. It
is also important to identify needs for the future
and how international projects can help address
these needs.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
An active civil society is critical for the
implementation of sustainable natural resources
and water management. The UNDP/GEF Kura
Aras Project strives to support this by raising
awareness of the importance of river system
health, especially biodiversity conservation with
links to water resources in the context of
pending developments impacting the river
system. Key issues for discussion include:
Incorporating biodiversity concerns into
land & water management decision making
at the river basin level.
Enhancement of biological data collection
methodologies for EIA/ESIAs and SEAs,
working towards approximation of
international standards (e.g. EU, WB).
Opportunities for collaboration with partner
NGOs for UNDP/GEF Kura Aras
demonstration project activities on
biodiversity related water issues.
Increasing the active role of biodiversity
NGOs in preparation and implementation of
national IWRM plans and regional Strategic
Action Plan for the Kura-Aras Basin.
TARGET GROUP
The training is primarily aiming at the following
target groups:
Representatives from NGOs active in the
field of biodiversity conservation and
environmental protection, related to both
the ecological aspects, education &
awareness raising, and stakeholder
involvement.
Representatives from international donor
organizations involved in aspects of water
management at the national and
transboundary levels.
The list of participants, including their
organization and e-mail addresses is included
as annex 1.
AGENDA
The final agenda of the NGO Forum is included
as annex 2.
LANGUAGE
The formal languages during the NGO Forum
will be English and Russian. Consecutive
translation English-Russian will be provided.
