ORGANIZATION<br />

The Scientific Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is organized by <strong>the</strong><br />

UNDP/GEF project “<strong>Reduc<strong>in</strong>g</strong> transboundary<br />

degradation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kura</strong> <strong>Ara</strong>s river bas<strong>in</strong>”, as part<br />

of <strong>the</strong> project’s Demonstration Project<br />

Component.<br />

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE<br />

The objective of <strong>the</strong> 2012 <strong>the</strong>matic NGO forum<br />

is to help identify current stakeholder activities <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> region and identify opportunities for<br />

cooperation at <strong>the</strong> national and regional level. It<br />

is also important to identify needs for <strong>the</strong> future<br />

and how <strong>in</strong>ternational projects can help address<br />

<strong>the</strong>se needs.<br />

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES<br />

An active civil society is critical for <strong>the</strong><br />

implementation of susta<strong>in</strong>able natural resources<br />

and water management. The UNDP/GEF <strong>Kura</strong><br />

<strong>Ara</strong>s Project strives to support this by rais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

awareness of <strong>the</strong> importance of river system<br />

health, especially biodiversity conservation with<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ks to water resources <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of<br />

pend<strong>in</strong>g developments impact<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> river<br />

system. Key issues for discussion <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

Incorporat<strong>in</strong>g biodiversity concerns <strong>in</strong>to<br />

land & water management decision mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at <strong>the</strong> river bas<strong>in</strong> level.<br />

Enhancement of biological data collection<br />

methodologies for EIA/ESIAs and SEAs,<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g towards approximation of<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational standards (e.g. EU, WB).<br />

Opportunities for collaboration with partner<br />

NGOs for UNDP/GEF <strong>Kura</strong> <strong>Ara</strong>s<br />

demonstration project activities on<br />

biodiversity related water issues.<br />

Increas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> active role of biodiversity<br />

NGOs <strong>in</strong> preparation and implementation of<br />

national IWRM plans and regional Strategic<br />

Action Plan for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kura</strong>-<strong>Ara</strong>s Bas<strong>in</strong>.<br />

TARGET GROUP<br />

The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is primarily aim<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

target groups:<br />

Representatives from NGOs active <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

field of biodiversity conservation and<br />

environmental protection, related to both<br />

<strong>the</strong> ecological aspects, education &<br />

awareness rais<strong>in</strong>g, and stakeholder<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement.<br />

Representatives from <strong>in</strong>ternational donor<br />

organizations <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> aspects of water<br />

management at <strong>the</strong> national and<br />

transboundary levels.<br />

The list of participants, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

organization and e-mail addresses is <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

as annex 1.<br />

AGENDA<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al agenda of <strong>the</strong> NGO Forum is <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

as annex 2.<br />

LANGUAGE<br />

The formal languages dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> NGO Forum<br />

will be <strong>English</strong> and Russian. Consecutive<br />

translation <strong>English</strong>-Russian will be provided.<br />
